Day 6: Half Day in Nara, Up-close with Deer at Nara Deer Park

Posted on December 15, 2019January 4, 2020 By sweet surrender 1 Comment on Day 6: Half Day in Nara, Up-close with Deer at Nara Deer Park

If you visit Nara, you must visit Nara Deer Park otherwise your trip to Nara doesn’t count. *LOL* If you plan to just spend half day in Nara, this is the easiest attraction to locate and access. Nara Park is a five minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, this is the best way to get there. If you are from JR Nara Station, it will take you about 20 minute. Alternatively, the park can be reached by bus. There are multiple stops around the park.

Greeted by the deer, curious creature, make sure you keep your cables or whatever dangling around you away or else they are going to chew on it. Do not tease them with non-food or something they can’t eat to avoid getting attacked. Only feed them the deer crackers which you can buy at the park and make sure you don’t tease them with it too. Be sincere, give it to them, don’t play with their feelings. Make sure you do not leave anything on the ground, the deer will eat anything they see and you will kill them.

Walking further into the park, the deer will get less as most gathered at the entrance. There are few buildings inside with rich history and being classified as National Treasure. Kōfuku-ji (興福寺, Kōfuku-ji) is one of the powerful Seven Great Temples, in the city of Nara, Japan.

Left: Here, you can see the five-story pagoda(五重塔 Gojū-no-tō) is a National Treasure built in 1426.

Right: Nan’endō(南円堂) which is an Important Cultural Property, built in the year 1741, it’s know as Site No.9 of Saigoku 33 Pilgrimage.

Left: East Golden Hall(東金堂 Tōkondō) is also one of the National Treasures built in the year 1425 which is one of the former three golden halls.

Right: Somewhere near the toilet ;p

Left: Taking photo with the deer is a must-do *LOL*

Right: Sarusawa-ike(49 Noborioji-cho, Nara, Nara Prefecture 630-8213) is a manmade pond. This is an artificial pond that was dug in 749 as part of the grounds of Kofukuji Temple. This is a great place for cherry blossom in spring and experience the Nara’s fall colours. Apparently there’s a legend related to this pond.

There is a legend that during the Nara period (710-794), the Emperor’s favor for the lady of the court, Uneme, waned and she drowned herself in grief here. At the edge of the pond is the Uneme Shrine which pays respect to the Uneme deity. (source: https://www.japanhoppers.com/en/kansai/nara/kanko/1235/)

After all the walking, it’s time for food! Hungry! When you come here, it’s a must to eat Kakinoha zushi(柿の葉ずし) also known as Persimmon Leaf Sushi. We bought it at a kiosk called Hiraso 平宗(2-1, Higashimukinakamachi, Nara city, Nara, 630-8215) just outside Kintetsu Nara Statio. Hiraso is founded back in 1861 at Yoshino Yamatokami City in the south part of Nara while Nara branch opened in 1968.

The one with reddish orange top is salmon and the one at the bottom right is mackerel. They are flavored with salt and vinegar. As for the two types of maki you see in the photo, the fillings are made up of different type of pickles.

After spending about 4 hours at Nara, we headed over to Fushimi Inari Taisha at Kyoto. This will be in the next post.

You can see more of Nara Deer Park in this video:

How to Make Bounty Cookies with Bounty Cookie Mix

Posted on December 10, 2019December 2, 2019 By sweet surrender No Comments on How to Make Bounty Cookies with Bounty Cookie Mix

I kept thinking I did post about how to bake with Bounty Cookie Mix, apparently I didn’t… I only posted it in on Instagram a year ago hahaha… This year, I decided to do a proper one on Youtube. Here you go…

Here’s the instructions for it which you can also find at the back of the packet:
You will need: 25g butter, 15ml water (1 tbsp).
Cooking appliances vary. These instructions are given as a guide.
Preheat your oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C /Gas Mark 4.
Empty the contents of the pouch into a bowl.
Soften 25g of butter in the microwave (Make sure it isn’t too hot or it will melt the chocolate).
Add the softened butter to the cookie mix and stir well (It should look a bit like a crumble mix).
Add water and mix until you have stiff dough (Add extra water if necessary).
Divide the mix into 8 evenly sized balls. Place on an ungreased baking tray and flatten (leave enough room between cookies so they can spread).
Bake in the centre of the oven for 12 minutes until golden (or leave in a little longer for extra crunch).
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking tray before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Day 3: A Visit to Cupnoodles Museum Osaka Ikeda

Posted on November 15, 2019November 17, 2019 By sweet surrender No Comments on Day 3: A Visit to Cupnoodles Museum Osaka Ikeda

Cupnoodles Museum Osaka Ikeda (8-25 Masumicho, Ikeda, Osaka 563-0041, Japan) is a fun place for children and adults to visit when you are in Osaka. Not only you can learn about the history of instant noodles and Cup Noodles, you will also get to learn about the founder, Momofuku Ando.

The museum is not hard to find. Most importantly is that you need to get to Ikeda Station on the Hankyu-Takarazuka Line, then follow the signage or there will be people manning the information counter to tell you how to go there at the station. Admission is free.

You can make your own cup noodles and instant ramen by paying for the activities. Be prepared for the long queue. Weekdays are the best time to go, weekend will be crowded. However, it was quite packed that time when we went there because it was their summer holiday. Their opening time is 9.30pm-4:30pm daily except Tuesday(off day).

Here’s the pricing of the activities:
Chicken Ramen Factory
Elementary school students 300 yen
Adult (Junior high school students and older) 500 yen

My CUPNOODLES Factory
300 yen for each CUPNOODLES

If you wonder how does it looks like inside, do check out my travel vlog below…

Ayam Brandâ„¢ Community Care Campaign 2019: Get Healthy Malaysia, Start Now (Sarawak)

Posted on November 10, 2019December 2, 2019 By sweet surrender No Comments on Ayam Brandâ„¢ Community Care Campaign 2019: Get Healthy Malaysia, Start Now (Sarawak)

After the successful Ayam Brandâ„¢ Community Care Campaign in 2018, they are now back with new theme, Get Healthy Malaysia, Start Now, that aims to empower children from 10 states in Malaysia with information to identify healthier food choices and equip them with skills to prepare their own Malaysian Healthy Plate meal. The program is open to children from eight years up.

This year, there are four charity homes from Kuching received two months’ supply of Ayam Brand™ products equivalent to 47,340 healthy meals for the total of 263 residents at these homes.

Ministry of Health Malaysia promotes Suku-Suku Separuh, the division of plate portion to a quarter for protein, a quarter for complex carbohydrates and half for fruits and vegetables. It is an easy way to portion out the types of food our body needs. Ayam Brandâ„¢ adopted this Suku-Suku Separuh concept for their annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

There were 20 children from Kompleks Kebajikan Laila Taib, Rumah Kanak-Kanak Toh Puan Hajah Norkiah Kuching, Salvation Army Kuching, SK. Batu Lintang and SJK (C) Chung Hua No 3 participated in the informative, challenging and fun ‘Ayam Brand™ Community Care Campaign 2019, Get Healthy Malaysia, Start Now’.

The event kicked off with an interactive introduction to the #sukusukuseparuh concept, followed by five teams of five children preparing a meal based on the 3S principles, within 30 minutes with minimal assistance from adults, using recipes that have been vetted by nutritionist.

While waiting for their Malaysian Healthy Plate meals to be evaluated the children were challenged with games that required Higher Order Thinking Skills to reinforce what they had learned on good nutrition.

Here’s the winning teams!

1st: Rumah Kanak-Kanak Toh Puan Hajah Norkiah Kuching
2nd: SJK Chung Hua No 3
3rd: SK Batu Lintang

Consolations:
Kompleks Kebajikan Laila Taib
Salvation Army Kuching

How to Find Mamee Monster Ghost Pepper Mystery Packet & Taste Test

Posted on November 6, 2019 By sweet surrender No Comments on How to Find Mamee Monster Ghost Pepper Mystery Packet & Taste Test

If you are wondering how to find the mystery Mamee, here’s a video I did for you 😉

Taste wise… If you cannot tolerate this spiciness, do not try those very spicy instant noodle, they will be too much for you. To me, this is not too bad, I can accept this level of spiciness but I definitely cannot stand those instant noodle. It’s not for people who cannot take very spicy food.

Happy hunting!
