Day 6: Half Day in Nara, Up-close with Deer at Nara Deer Park

Posted on December 15, 2019January 4, 2020 By sweet surrender 1 Comment on Day 6: Half Day in Nara, Up-close with Deer at Nara Deer Park

If you visit Nara, you must visit Nara Deer Park otherwise your trip to Nara doesn’t count. *LOL* If you plan to just spend half day in Nara, this is the easiest attraction to locate and access. Nara Park is a five minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, this is the best way to get there. If you are from JR Nara Station, it will take you about 20 minute. Alternatively, the park can be reached by bus. There are multiple stops around the park.

Greeted by the deer, curious creature, make sure you keep your cables or whatever dangling around you away or else they are going to chew on it. Do not tease them with non-food or something they can’t eat to avoid getting attacked. Only feed them the deer crackers which you can buy at the park and make sure you don’t tease them with it too. Be sincere, give it to them, don’t play with their feelings. Make sure you do not leave anything on the ground, the deer will eat anything they see and you will kill them.

Walking further into the park, the deer will get less as most gathered at the entrance. There are few buildings inside with rich history and being classified as National Treasure. Kōfuku-ji (興福寺, Kōfuku-ji) is one of the powerful Seven Great Temples, in the city of Nara, Japan.

Left: Here, you can see the five-story pagoda(五重塔 Gojū-no-tō) is a National Treasure built in 1426.

Right: Nan’endō(南円堂) which is an Important Cultural Property, built in the year 1741, it’s know as Site No.9 of Saigoku 33 Pilgrimage.

Left: East Golden Hall(東金堂 Tōkondō) is also one of the National Treasures built in the year 1425 which is one of the former three golden halls.

Right: Somewhere near the toilet ;p

Left: Taking photo with the deer is a must-do *LOL*

Right: Sarusawa-ike(49 Noborioji-cho, Nara, Nara Prefecture 630-8213) is a manmade pond. This is an artificial pond that was dug in 749 as part of the grounds of Kofukuji Temple. This is a great place for cherry blossom in spring and experience the Nara’s fall colours. Apparently there’s a legend related to this pond.

There is a legend that during the Nara period (710-794), the Emperor’s favor for the lady of the court, Uneme, waned and she drowned herself in grief here. At the edge of the pond is the Uneme Shrine which pays respect to the Uneme deity. (source: https://www.japanhoppers.com/en/kansai/nara/kanko/1235/)

After all the walking, it’s time for food! Hungry! When you come here, it’s a must to eat Kakinoha zushi(柿の葉ずし) also known as Persimmon Leaf Sushi. We bought it at a kiosk called Hiraso 平宗(2-1, Higashimukinakamachi, Nara city, Nara, 630-8215) just outside Kintetsu Nara Statio. Hiraso is founded back in 1861 at Yoshino Yamatokami City in the south part of Nara while Nara branch opened in 1968.

The one with reddish orange top is salmon and the one at the bottom right is mackerel. They are flavored with salt and vinegar. As for the two types of maki you see in the photo, the fillings are made up of different type of pickles.

After spending about 4 hours at Nara, we headed over to Fushimi Inari Taisha at Kyoto. This will be in the next post.

How to Make Bounty Cookies with Bounty Cookie Mix

Posted on December 10, 2019December 2, 2019 By sweet surrender No Comments on How to Make Bounty Cookies with Bounty Cookie Mix

I kept thinking I did post about how to bake with Bounty Cookie Mix, apparently I didn’t… I only posted it in on Instagram a year ago hahaha… This year, I decided to do a proper one on Youtube. Here you go…

Here’s the instructions for it which you can also find at the back of the packet:
You will need: 25g butter, 15ml water (1 tbsp).
Cooking appliances vary. These instructions are given as a guide.
Preheat your oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C /Gas Mark 4.
Empty the contents of the pouch into a bowl.
Soften 25g of butter in the microwave (Make sure it isn’t too hot or it will melt the chocolate).
Add the softened butter to the cookie mix and stir well (It should look a bit like a crumble mix).
Add water and mix until you have stiff dough (Add extra water if necessary).
Divide the mix into 8 evenly sized balls. Place on an ungreased baking tray and flatten (leave enough room between cookies so they can spread).
Bake in the centre of the oven for 12 minutes until golden (or leave in a little longer for extra crunch).
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking tray before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Orgga – Natural Skincare that Works Review | It Feels Like You’re Transported to a Spa

Posted on December 5, 2019December 15, 2019 By sweet surrender No Comments on Orgga – Natural Skincare that Works Review | It Feels Like You’re Transported to a Spa

When I received Orgga in my mail, I was so excited to try it because it’s a Malaysian skincare product founded by Zaza. It uses quality natural and organic ingredients to deliver nature’s goodness to your skin without the high price tag that you will usually get with such products. It’s also cruelty-free, plant based, no paraben, no SLS/SLES, and no harmful chemicals.

My skin has not been behaving lately and easily get sensitive. Guess because of my age(I’m in my mid 30s, seriously!), all the aging signs are showing too! Oh dear! It’s at the stage where something light is too light while something heavy is too heavy. It’s not easy to find something in between. When I’m given with the opportunity to try Orgga products, I didn’t think twice and hop on the bandwagon. I was given with Oliva Set mainly to target dry and mature skin.

First, let’s clean our face. A clean face is important to ensure whatever goodness we introduce to our skin will be able to penetrate well.

Orgga French Rose 3 in 1: Daily Cleansing Powder(RM69.00, 50gm) is not your normal cleanser. It can be used as mask too. No bubble at all. This is suitable for those with normal, combination, dry, and mature skin. Here’s the ingredient list:

Colloidal Oatmeal* · Moroccan Rhassoul Clay · French Pink Clay · Ground Almonds · Brown rice flour* · Coconut milk · Flaxseed meal* · Rose flowers · Hibiscus flowers · Lavender flowers · Chamomile flowers · Elderberry · Rosehip · Raspberry · Orange peel · Moringa leaf* · Goji berry · Grape seed

*organic ingredient

100% natural, 56% organic, no preservative

Essential oil: Rose Geranium · Palmarosa · Frankincense

Even though it’s made from a combination of natural and organic ingredients, I would recommend you to pay attention to the ingredient lists as some of you might have allergy on these ingredients.

The cleanser is in powder form, hence do not store it in the bathroom, you don’t want it to soak up the moisture in the bathroom. Since it has no preservatives, you don’t want the moisture to contaminate the powder. Also, I saw some people actually smell/inhale it! Hello?!!? Do not do that!! *LOL* It’s powder!! Why do you want to make yourself sneeze *LOL* How silly can that be?!?!

How to use?
1. Remove your makeup and rinse your face with water.
2. Pour about 1 teaspoon of cleansing powder on your palm.
3. Add few drops of water (I would recommend 3 drops).
4. Mix it into consistency of paste.
6. Massage gently in circular motion on your damp face and neck, then rinse off. Do avoid the eye area.
If you want to leave it for longer as a mask, just leave it for 2 to 5 minutes, it will dry on your skin, then rinse off.

For me, I will leave it on my face and step into the shower and rinse it away while I’m having my shower.

The granules are quite rough but it doesn’t leave any redness to my face after cleansing. That’s quite a surprise! My face feels so smooth and calm, no tight feeling too. The smell is awesome! I thought I was in a spa, so calming and relaxing.

However, I won’t recommend you to use it twice a day, maybe every evening would be enough. I only use it on alternate evening due to the rough granules. At the end of the day, it really depends on your skin condition, some people can use it daily, some cannot, hence you must understand your skin conditions and needs to adjust the usage based on it.

***

Second step, prepare your skin with Orgga Le Neroli Hydrating Face Mist(RM60.00, 60ml) which can also be used as toner. Great for all skin type but especially great for those with dry and mature skin. Do shake before use.

It has ingredients that can help in anti-aging, anti-inflammation, antiseptic, and anti-bacteria. Again, make sure you check the ingredients to ensure you have no allergy to them. Here’s the ingredient list:

Neroli hydrosol · Aqua · Aloe Vera leaf juice · Acai berry extract · Strawberry extract · Radish Root Ferment Filtrate · Vegetable Glycerin · Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside (Vegetable derived)

100% natural, no artificial preservative

Essential oil: Neroli · Bergamot oil (Bergaptene Free) · Ylang Ylang

Look at the very fine mist. Love it! Love the smell! Face feel refreshed after spraying it. You can bring this out with you to hydrate and soothe your skin when you need aside from using it as toner.

You can proceed to step 3 after spritzing it and lightly pat it on your skin.

***

Step 3, while your face is still damp with Le Neroli Hydrating Face Mist, apply 2 to 3 drops of Orgga Oliva Luxe Beauty Oil(RM95.00, 20ml). DO NOT DRIP THE PRODUCT DIRECTLY ON YOUR FACE! It’s a wrong way to apply any skincare product and DON’T TOUCH THE TIP ON YOUR FACE! Not only it’s a waste of the product because you only need 2-3 drops, it’s is also unhygienic. Those “beauty influencers/gurus” are not teaching you the right method duh… It’s all just marketing gimmick, just for the camera to show you the product.

The correct way to use face oil is to get 2 to 3 drops of the oil on your palm, warm it by rubbing your palm together and gently pat or smooth it out on your skin. You can massage your face and neck with the oil or use it with a face roller.

I use the oil before moisturizer during the day because I read somewhere that oil can reduce the effectiveness of sunscreen. At night, I will use it on top of moisturizer. Sometimes I would just use it on its own depending on the skin condition of the day(you know sometimes the hormone can affect your skin condition). My face isn’t as oily at the end of the day as it used to and dry spots have lessen too.

Once again… Check the ingredients as I know some people are sensitive to certain essential oil, here’s the list:

Meadowfoam oil · Olive Squalane · Kukuinut oil · Morrocan Argan oil* · Sweet Almond oil · Rosehip oil · Pomegranate seed oil · Raspberry seed oil · Prickly pear oil · Sea Buckthorn oil · Natural Vitamin E · Sunflower oil

*Organic verified

100% natural and pure cold-pressed oil, no preservative

Essential oil: Neroli · Frankincense · Sweet Orange · Palmarosa · Clary Sage · Carrot seed

***

For the extra pampering, you can add in Rose Quartz Roller(RM120.00) which is great for anti-aging. It has two side, small and big roller. When it is brand new, make sure you wash it with warm water before using it. Also, make sure you clean it after every use by wiping it with clean damp cloth. Run it under warm water at least once every few days to clean it. Then wipe it dry and air dry it because you might not be able to dry the inside of the roller.

The colour might differ from each roller as it is made from natural rose quartz. Rose quartz is known to be great for aging skin because it can strengthen the skin structure(Silica), slow down aging(Magnesium), regulate blood circulation(Iron), fight free radical(Natrium), and provide glow to the skin(Oxygen).

You don’t have to press hard on the skin. Just roll it very lightly. The big one for the bigger area and small one is great for the eye area, the side of the nose, and upper lip area.

Do it in upward direction for the forehead;
Outward direction towards the temple area for the eye and eyebrow;
Outward direction to the tragus(A small pointed eminence of the external ear. You can google where it is) area for the face;
Downward direction from below the ear to the neck down to the décolletage.

This way, you can reduce puffiness from water retention and drain the toxin out from your face. It feels so good and I’m using it every night. The puffiness and the dark circle on my eye area has slightly reduced.

Be extra gentle when you use it on your eye area.

Be sure to do it in one direction very very gently, not rolling it back and forth otherwise your skin will get hurt from excessive rubbing.

***

I’ve been using this set for 2 weeks and my skin doesn’t suffer any breakout or any discomfort from using it. The smell is so nice that it makes you feel calm, relax, and happy. Maybe that’s why the skin condition improves too because happy mood, happy skin.

Here’s a video of unboxing and trying out the products:

There you go… My review of Orgga products. What do you think? Do you want to try it out? If so, I have a good news to share with you.

They are having #YESORGGA Year End Sales now where you can get up to 40% off! Head over to Orgga official website to check them out.

Day 5: Half Day at Nishiki Market(錦市場, Nishiki Ichiba), Kyoto, Street Food Heaven!!

Posted on November 30, 2019February 28, 2023 By sweet surrender No Comments on Day 5: Half Day at Nishiki Market(錦市場, Nishiki Ichiba), Kyoto, Street Food Heaven!!

Nishiki Market(錦市場, Nishiki Ichiba) was in fact our last minute decision that we made after our visit to Shiga. We had this as a backup in case we left Shiga early. Off we went to Nishiki Market…

It’s packed! The market closes at 6pm. If you like this type of place, I would recommend you to stay here for at least 4 hours! We left when it was almost closing time and it started to rain.

So much to see here. The sight and sound can be pretty interesting. There’s also plenty of food samples to try. It’s really a foodie heaven and the place is very instagrammable.

You can find all things matcha hahahaha… Spoil for choices!

Our tea break… The sashimi was great! So satisfying!

We just wandered around and came across Nishiki-Tenmangu Shrine. Many people in there. Really love how the lanterns lighted up the place.

I’m glad that we visited this market because this is the one and only market that we managed to visit during our trip. Do check out my day 5 travel vlog here if you want to experience the sight and sound of the place:

Day 5: A Half Day Trip to Otsu Nagisa Lakeside Park, Shiga

Posted on November 25, 2019November 22, 2019 By sweet surrender No Comments on Day 5: A Half Day Trip to Otsu Nagisa Lakeside Park, Shiga

Our trip was to set foot on each prefecture of Kansai. When we came across Shiga, it was hard to make decision because there isn’t anything nearby with easy access. Almost all you need to take different mode of transport and travel time can be long. Since we only have one day, we decided to just go to the public park called Otsu Nagisa Lakeside Park where we will get to see the largest freshwater lake in Japan, Lake Biwa. It covers a large area of the city, so no matter which side of Shiga you’re at, you will definitely get to experience the lake, the only different is the kind of environment you will be in when you take a glimpse and experience the lake.

So… Our plan was to locate the nearest station near the lake, doesn’t matter where, as long that we can be at the lake. After much research, this park is the easiest to reach without needing other mode of transport. The official website did mention that it is just 10 minutes walk from JR Biwako Line Otsu Station but some how it took us longer… Maybe because of the heat and we were trying to navigate the place. However, based on Google map, we had to come to this small station called the Keihan Railway Shimanoseki Station to reach our destination.

It wasn’t that straight forward, we still need to walk quite a fair bit. It was already noon and we decided to grab lunch along the way. Luckily we came Seibu Otsu Store(2 Chome-3-1 Nionohama, Otsu, Shiga 520-0801, Japan) while we were on the way to the park. We need to get out of the heat and find food. The photo is not Seibu Otsu Store, it’s just some buildings opposite the Keihan Railway Shimanoseki Station station.

Otsu Nagisa Lakeside Park is a public park. It was quite windy when we were there. I was thinking of going near the water to touch the water but at the end I did not because I chickened out hahaha…

It’s a big lake indeed. I can’t really find much info on this lake. Well… Let’s just put it as a waterfront or public park where locals will spend their time here enjoying the breeze and the view. Saw people fish here too.

I figured those are the hotels and attractions nearer to the city where many tourists will be hanging around. We didn’t see any foreigners at this park.

It’s just so quiet.

We didn’t spend too long of our time here. We had achieved our objective, Shiga, done! Since the sky was turning grey, we decided to make a move to Kyoto to visit the Nishiki Market before it closes. This will be in my next post or you can check out my day 5 travel vlog here…
