The Barber

Posted on December 5, 2015December 5, 2015 By sweet surrender No Comments on The Barber

The Barber (74, Lebuh Wayang, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak) is located next to The Junk.

Been wanting to try it but chickened out because the place looked spooky with all those old barber shop props in there especially the fake heads. It was a barber shop before. Finally one day, we have no choice as The Junk was fully booked, so we had to go to The Barber. Reluctant but still went.

The interior design is very unique, certainly something you don’t get anywhere in Kuching.

Few months back, the kitchen wasn’t ready so the menu was from The Junk. Now, they have their own menu serving gourmet Asian fusion food but you can still order the food from The Junk.

We ordered from both restaurants, The Barber and The Junk.

Left: I think this should be “Truffle” French Fries with Grated Parmesan (RM12). It’s ok, tasted as it should. Not oily.

Right: Shrimp pasta (RM26), linguini pasta in creamy sauce, capers, lemon with Cajun spiced shrimps. According to the person who ordered this, it’s just normal.

Left: Grilled Salmon (RM36), Salmon steak on a bed of quinoa salsa, rocket salad and tomatoes with lemon and dill sauce. Unfortunately, the fish was overcooked, too dried. Definitely a one person portion, cannot be something for sharing.

Right: From The Junk, one of our favourites, Duck Mango Salad (RM38). Definitely a sharing portion. This time around was a bit too spicy and wet but still good.

Overall, price wise, it’s high. Portion is not as big as we expected and the taste is just average. Will I come back? Depends on who I’m going with as my usual dining companion doesn’t like the environment of the place, she said it’s spooky hahaha…

Kedai Kopi Kim Hing

Posted on November 26, 2015November 26, 2015 By sweet surrender No Comments on Kedai Kopi Kim Hing

Kedai Kopi Kim Hing is located in Semenyih next to a primary school, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Sin Ming.

A row of old shops which housed a number of coffee shops serving different food. Always filled with people. This is the place for breakfast in Semenyih. The locals sure love this place. Food is good and cheap.

Left: Milo, very thick. This is the kind of Milo you should get in old school coffee shops in Malaysia.

Right: The signature dish of this coffee shop, steamed and toast bread with butter and their homemade kaya. OH! Heaven! Having pipping hot soft and fluffy bread with mixture of melted butter and kaya is sure a good way to start your morning. This is what you called Malaysian breakfast.

Left: The curry noodle from the other shop, just next door, not bad as well. It’s not as spicy as it looked. Many people ordered it too.

Right: Another breakfast item that Malaysians love! Soft boil eggs! This is from Kedai Kopi Kim Hing. I think they have their own concoction of soy sauce and pepper powder as they don’t taste like normal soy sauce or pepper powder. More on the sweeter side. Despite the unique taste, they are still good. However, I still prefer the usual soy sauce and pepper powder.

If you’re around, do pay them a visit, better go early as I’m sure they sold out fast.

Restoran Xin Shi Jie

Posted on November 18, 2015November 18, 2015 By sweet surrender No Comments on Restoran Xin Shi Jie

After we got back from the mountainous drive, it’s time for dinner. Had dinner at Restoran Xin Shi Jie (No. 21-G, Jalan Semenyih Sentral 4, Semenyih Sentral, Selangor Darul Ehsan, 43500 Semenyih).

Was quite exhausted already, not really in the mood to eat so just simply ordered some food which according to my bro, these are their signature dishes. Have not much details of the food. Just to share where you can find good food in Semenyih.

Mixed bean, crunchy and fresh. A little on the spicy side.

Left: Salted egg yolk deep fried calamari. This is highly recommended. I like it.

Right: Xin Shi Jie’s signature taufu. It tasted as it should.

Overall, the food is good and affordable. Just one thing though, don’t sit near to the cashier area if you can’t stand cigarette smoke. The lady owner is one hell of a chain smoker, goodness… First time I see this kind of smoker.

Fraser’s Hill

Posted on November 8, 2015November 8, 2015 By sweet surrender No Comments on Fraser’s Hill

The Fraser’s Hill is a hill resort located on the Titiwangsa Ridge in Pahang, Malaysia. We went there straight after checking out of Genting Highlands. It’s more than an hour drive but I don’t remember how long exactly was the drive. After a long winding drive, going up, up, up, we finally reached the place.

Was expecting a lot of human activities there since it’s one of Malaysia’s most popular nature and highland resort destinations. Yet, it’s deserted. You see more monkeys, birds, bees, ants, and etc. than human *LOL*

Temperature was quite nice. Very quiet place. We thought we could have our lunch here but couldn’t find a proper place for it. The only nearest choice is at Puncak Inn but we decided to just went down the hill to find food instead.

Almost all the attractions were closed. I guess it’s not holiday season, that’s why they don’t bother to open it.

Nevertheless, I did enjoy the nature photography here. Took these with my almost 8 years old Canon IXUS 80 IS.

Left: Monkeys everywhere! More monkeys than human hahaha… They seemed to be moving from one location to another. I’ve not seen so many of them before. It’s amusing to see them moving around via the cables rather than on the ground.

Right: One of the attractions, Allan’s Water. It was closed that time.

We just drove around and went down as there’s not much things there to see and do. However, if you would like to enjoy the nature and peace and quiet, this is a place to go especially during normal days. There’s many resorts for you to stay. Don’t expect anything else. I’m not sure about the holiday season but I think it should be rather happening.

At least, I’ve been here after learning about it back then in primary school. Another destination in Malaysia visited.

Aurora Saturday Buffet Dinner

Posted on October 30, 2015October 31, 2015 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Aurora Saturday Buffet Dinner

17th October, Aurora Court, the all-day dining restaurant of Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites(Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, 93000 Kuching), launched its Aurora Saturday Dinner Buffet.

All sort of appetizers, salad, umai, rojak, gado-gado, you name it. The local appetizers were pretty good. While the salad was just normal, your usual salad, make your own, how to go wrong with that? *LOL* Local ones require more skills and unique.

After that, hot dishes. When I go for buffet, I don’t really like going for hot dishes, I will only go straight to its signature items.

This is the thing I’ll go for in Aurora Saturday Dinner Buffet. Mongolian BBQ where you can witness live cooking by the chefs. Pick your fresh ingredients, fish, chicken, vegetables, and more. I’ll just have these, no rice. Yum yum!

By the way, the fruit carvings were done by the executive chef. There’s a section dedicated to fresh fruits. Fruits are good for you.

The chefs who would be cooking for you 😉 New executive chef, Fadill, with his team.

Left: Chicken rice is available upon request. Roasted or steamed chicken, or both. I would just go for the chicken hahaha… I’m not touching any rice most of the time if I’m having buffet.

Right: The carving station where you can find roasted duck or chicken, smoked lamb or beef or chicken. Every week is different.

Carving station is also my favourite section. Never missed! Tender and juicy… Oh yummy yummy!

Dessert corner that I will not be missed too. If not, sure will be not be satisfied.

My favourite dessert for the night, red velvet with cream cheese layer. Just not fond of the kiwi on top. Fresh fruits on the wrong type of cake just irked me. The cake size was small but that’s the whole point as there’s still other desserts to indulge. Pportion is great. Too much can be too overwhelming.

Delicious desserts. Not sugary sweet, the sweetness was acceptable. As you know I don’t really like sweet things but these were just right for me. What you see here is just partial selection, there’s another corner with other cakes too.

Bad dessert will ruin my whole dinner. Hence, good dessert is very important for me. They did it well as compared to other hotels I went before. Normally, I’ll get extremely sweet desserts which would end up untouched on my plate but not here. I cleared everything 😛

Aside from that, there’s ice cream and ice kacang section too. Well… I’m not really into ice cream or ice dessert after buffet.

If you are interested to go to Aurora Saturday Dinner Buffet at Merdeka Palace Hotel & suites, it is available every Saturday from 6.30pm to 9.30pm.

Priced at RM86nett per adult, 50% OFF for Child (5-12 years old)

Inclusive of free flow cordial drink.

Come in a group of 5 adults, the 5th adult onwards get 20% OFF. The more the merrier!

For further inquiries and details regarding Aurora Saturday Dinner Buffet, please contact 082-258000 ext 8061 (Aurora Court) or F&B Office ext. 8004 (8.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.)
