Sarawak+Brunei Road Trip (18-25/11/2013) – Part 2

Posted on December 5, 2013December 7, 2013 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Sarawak+Brunei Road Trip (18-25/11/2013) – Part 2

After Sri Aman, we drove to Sibu, about 3 hours drive.

Hehehe… We were greeted with toll! We were shocked hahaha… Didn’t know there’s actually toll being charged in Sarawak. That proves that we’re all too narrow sighted ;p Something new for all of us! Well, well, well… I was in Sibu more than 20 years ago and the others just flew to Sibu instead of driving so no one knows about the toll implementation. My friend told me it’s implemented for a long time already more or less 10 years yet we knew nothing about it ;p If not for this trip, I still don’t know about this fact.

Once we got into Sibu, we went to check-in at Kingwood Sibu.

Very spacious room. After staying at numerous hotels during this trip, my roommate and I felt that this is the most comfortable hotel stay we had. Maybe we were still quite active and healthy that time as towards the end we were just too sick to enjoy the stay hahaha…

Dinner at Taman Selera Harmoni. Great array of choice of Muslim food.

Left: Sup tulang (literally translate it as bone soup ;p)
Right: Kampua (beef version)

Left: Ayam penyet.
Right: Nasi Lemak, my nasi lemak took so long to come out -.-” Everyone almost finished their food, then I got mine. It’s not delicious at all. Chicken was so dry while the sambal was quite diluted. No kick.

I can’t comment on other food as they’re not mine. After the dinner, we called it a night.

The view from our room. Sibu changes so much! Surprisingly it’s not a dead town during the day and even at night. Very lively, people everywhere and yes… You can find traffic jam there too. It’s definitely not quiet at all.

Left: The swan near our hotel. Sibu, nicknamed the Swan City. Our hotel is just next to the Rajang River.

Sibu is an inland town. It is located at the confluence of the Rajang and Igan Rivers, some 60 kilometres from the ocean and approximately 183.3 kilometres east-north-east of Kuching.

Right: A structure found at the esplanade. It stated “Xu Clan World Convention Garden”. I have no idea what it’s all about, what’s the significant? Share with me if you know.

Breakfast was at Siong Nguong Cafe. How we ended up here? Seriously no idea. We got no idea where to eat, just loitered around the hotel area and ended up here.

Left: I’m not sure what this is called but if in Kuching, I’ll call it meat dumpling ;p it’s meat dumpling anyway. Won’t say it’s the best but still can eat. Don’t remember the price but quite cheap.

Right: Nasi goreng with curry chicken, looked not bad. At first I thought it’s nasi lemak hahahah…

A hut found at the esplanade. It resembles the house of one of the natives in Sarawak. Looks like Rumah Baruk but not sure.

Taking a stroll at the esplanade.

The express boat terminal is not far too. Walking distant. A very busy place with lots of human activities. If you have a chance, try to sit there for an hour or so, just observe the surrounding, you’ll be surprised with various activities and people in this place which I am very sure most of us won’t see it everyday. It makes you appreciate the river even more and you’ll have a lot to ponder upon and be thankful with what you have. I missed the chance to go into the boat for a quick look around.

This is my first time coming so close to so many express boats. If you want to go to Kapit and some smaller towns inaccessible by road, you will have to go from here.

Left: Part of the skyline of Sibu from the esplanade.

Right: An express boat making its way to its destination.

More to come…

Sarawak+Brunei Road Trip (18-25/11/2013) – Part 1

Posted on December 3, 2013December 7, 2013 By sweet surrender No Comments on Sarawak+Brunei Road Trip (18-25/11/2013) – Part 1

Let’s start a quick post of my road trip with CatsFM’s Rangers 2 weeks back.

We gathered early at CatsFM office waiting to depart to our first destination Sri Aman.

Left: The team of Cats Rangers working hard to promote Visit Sarawak Year 2014 during this road trip. The promotional activities are ongoing throughout the year. So spot them somewhere in town, you’ll get to win prizes from them.

Right: We had our breakfast at Restauran AVS (Lot 649, Serian Town District, Jalan Serian By Pass, Serian, 94700) somewhere near Petronas in Serian before starting our long road trip. I always go to Serian but this is my first time coming across this place ;p simply because my family normally will have Chinese food here than Indian food. I heard this is the only Indian restaurant in Serian. They have another branch in Demak Laut.

Left: Nasi Goreng, not bad looking right? I don’t know how it tasted, it was someone else food ;p
Right: Roti Canai kosong. You can choose to have your choice of curry to go with it. Not bad. Haven’t eaten any decent roti canai for awhile. Had dhal curry with it but the curry was a bit bland.

After our breakfast in Serian, we started our journey.

Sri Aman it is after 2 1/2 to 3 hours drive but the ride felt like forever! About 194-km from Kuching. Thanks to the road hahaha… If back in Adelaide, this amount of time of driving is a breeze but not here of course 😀 However, the view is not something you see everyday, so it’s something different to see when you’re on the road.

Sri Aman is a market town and port, and the capital of Sri Aman District and Sri Aman Division in Sarawak, east Malaysia. Sri Aman is also called Bandar Sri Aman, and was formerly known as Simanggang.

The temple that you will definitely see next to the river. If you have heard of Tidal Bore Festival aka Pesta Benak, this is the town famous for it. During this time of the year, it will be flooded with people.

What is Pesta Benak?

This event happens every year in May at Batang Lupar River Front At Sri Aman Town. Pesta Benak is one of Sarawak’s iconic event and celebrated on a grand scale. Centered in Sri Aman, there will longboat paddling competition, tidal bore surfing, water sports, food and trade fair and nightly entertainment.

How to get there? Drive or take the bus from Kuching Sentral or inquire with the nearest travel agents.

This is my second time here. Aman means peaceful, it’s indeed a very peaceful quiet little town. After a brief stop at Sri Aman, we continued our journey to Sibu. To be continued…

Port Dickson (7/9/2013)

Posted on November 29, 2013November 29, 2013 By sweet surrender 4 Comments on Port Dickson (7/9/2013)

All right, I should get this post over with before starting with the last week road trip. Suddenly I’m a travel blogger, blogging all about my travels these few months. Aikss… Not fully recovered from the road trip yet, body still aching, a little bit of cough and blocked nose hahaha… Can only manage to do this light post before getting headache facing the computer or using my brain for too long.

So, after Melaka, we drove to Port Dickson. The stupid me thought that Port Dickson was below Melaka and didn’t inform my bro which exit to take when he was at the exit of the highway after the toll. He should be taking the KL exit not the JB exit. Actually, I have no idea why he took the Johor exit too when he knew that we should be going back to KL and he knew that Port Dickson was not down there but up there. He might be too overwhelmed that time. I have no sense of direction, seriously! We had the GPS with us but looking at it, it seemed like asking us to take that exit too. HO!HO!HO! There you go… We ended up had to go tru’ Johor’s border to turn back! Wasted time, money and fuel.

Dad’s friend was expecting us to meet him in Port Dickson but didn’t see us there in an hour. He got worried and called us to find that we took the wrong exit *LOL* Didn’t really get to spend much time there when we arrived as we wanted to get back to Semenyih before it got too dark. Finally when we arrived Port Dickson, we went straight to Royal Port Dickson Yacht Club (Batu 4 ½, Jalan Pantai, 71050 Sirusa, Port Dickson Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, 5, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia). It’s a private club, not open for public.

The beach.

Left: At the cafe waiting for our early dinner.
Right: Fresh fruit juice, 100% fresh fruit juice, no sugar added. Honeydew, starfruit, and pineapple.

Left: Fish and Chips (RM10), what to expect? Fish and chips it is.

Right: Mixed Girll (RM20), portion was huge! Taste wise, I was expecting better. All the meat was heavily marinated, couldn’t really taste the meat but just the marinates.

Left: Grilled Lamb (RM16), same thing, heavily marinated.

Right: The view of the beach at the club.

Before heading off, we dropped by another place, don’t remember the name, it’s a public beach just to look at the sunset. Very beautiful!

The September road trip ended here. A few more food posts from random places after this road trip before we flew back are still in the oven. Hope will get them out soon.

I’m Back!

Posted on November 26, 2013November 28, 2013 By sweet surrender 4 Comments on I’m Back!

Finally I’m back after going missing for more than a week. Was on a road trip from Kuching to Limbang and not to forget Brunei with Cats Rangers. It was an interesting road trip. So much to see, so much to learn. It has given me a different perspective of Sarawak. This is a huge state but each and every part of it plays different role in making Sarawak unique. No two places are the same.

Before this trip, the furthest road trip I ever made was to Betong. Now, finally broken the record. Traveling on the road is really scary, it’s an adventure for those who love it. For me, I don’t think I want to do it again unless it’s on a bus, not on a van. The road was extremely bumpy and lots of dangerous stretches.

I don’t think I will be able to update this blog for awhile, I’m back with sinus problem mainly due to the changes of environment and lack of rest.

Hopefully I’ll get well soon. Seriously need a proper rest now. Will update as soon as I can.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank CatsFM, CATS Perodua Rangers, Sarawak Bloggers, and Ministry of Tourism Sarawak for giving me the opportunity to discover Sarawak on the road.

You can always check out my Twitter (http://twitter.com/irenelaw) to get the summary of my journey.

Visit Sarawak Year 2014 Media Campaign Launch

Posted on November 17, 2013November 18, 2013 By sweet surrender 5 Comments on Visit Sarawak Year 2014 Media Campaign Launch

Soo… I will be away on the ultimate Sarawak+Brunei road trip of my life with CatsFM starting tomorrow lasting 8 days.

Why is this happening? This is because next year will be Visit Sarawak Year 2014. Starting now, there will be lots of campaign promoting Sarawak to the world and I’m happy and glad to be able to be a part of it.

I took lots of photos of the launch and a videos of the theme song but guess what?!!? The ultimate blur queen, me, accidentally deleted all the photos and video. What left are these you see here…

Attention to people in Sri Aman (18/11, 12.15pm), Sibu (19/11, 9am), Mukah (20/11, 12.15pm), Bintulu (21/11, 9am), Miri (22/11, 3pm), Brunei (23/11, 2pm & 24/11, 8pm), and Limbang (24/11, 9am & 1pm), spot this car for the Perodua Rangers activities by CatsFM around the town and get some freebies ok? 😉

Biaramas buses that are “dressed up” to promote VSY 2014 will be seen throughout Borneo. Too bad we won’t be traveling on this bus for this trip.

Minister of Housing and Minister of Tourism Sarawak Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg was there at Merdeka Plaza for the launch.

There might be live updates from me during the road trip via my Twitter or in this blog if I can find the time and the opportunity to do it. Do follow me if you want and do Like my FB page – Irene Law – Sweet Surrender as I will organize a giveaway contest after I got back from my trip because there’s more than 100 Likes already.

Blogging since 2002. Anything before 2006 is no longer available. It is no longer on this server. Back then, I built my own blog and updated it using HTML. No database or anything. Only started blogging fully with a CMS in 2006. However, whatever was on the Internet will stay on the Internet. So... It should be still somewhere on the Internet. Then again... Why do you want to dig that far?
