Roxy Tasik Biru & Siniawan Night Market | Ever Thought of Celebrating Birthday Here?

Posted on March 20, 2022March 18, 2022 By sweet surrender No Comments on Roxy Tasik Biru & Siniawan Night Market | Ever Thought of Celebrating Birthday Here?

How long have you not been to Tasik Biru, Bau? It’s been years for me. I think the last time I was here was back in 2017 or is it 2018? See… Too long till I cannot remember. Then in 2020, everything was closed. Everyone just stayed home.

Two weekends ago, it was my brother’s birthday. Too bad he couldn’t come back, stuck in Singapore. We decided to just drive around and ended up in Bau. We took some photos and videos to show him instead. Hahaha… If he’s back, if the pandemic doesn’t exist, we might celebrate his birthday here.

Here are some of the structures found in Bau town. I quite like the one on the right with flying birds. The one on the left is pitcher plants and gold miners. Bau has a history of being a gold mining town.

Recently, at the end of 2021, a new hotel was opened. It’s called the Roxy Tasik Biru.

Prior to that, this is the only signboard you would see. Minus those infrastructures at the back. This lake has a lot of stories and mysteries of its own. You can always Google it 😉

Now, you can find floating chalets and eatery there along with the fountain and floating platform that let you cross the lake to get to the hotel.

Water activities such as boat rides and paddling are available. Need to pay of course. Can feed fish too. The new additions to the lake give some pop of colours to the lake. Previously, it was all shades of greens and blues.

Look at the mountain there. Whenever you see this mountain, you know that you’re in Bau. It’s called Mount Krian aka Kerian(if I’m not mistaken). I didn’t know this place is Sarawak Delta Geopark though haha… Only know now *LOL* Don’t think I was aware of it even when I was working in my previous company ;p I think the signboard was only built recently. Looks rather new.

Truth to be told I prefer this side of the view. Never paid attention to how beautiful the view here is. Who would expect this view is just right here, so near to home?

We were there for one hour or less. Then we made our way back to Kuching. Along the way, we stopped at Siniawan Night Market.

I’ve not been here for so long. The last time I came here was for work. I remember there was one time when we celebrated a friend’s birthday here but don’t remember exactly when. The weekend night market is basically a mini food fair. Have you ever celebrate birthday here?

Since we were there at 4.30pm, there was no crowd and people were still preparing for the night. In fact, we had no plan to dine here. Just want to have a look. It’s been a while.

However, we did buy some local Chinese kue home for dinner. There you go… My quick little unplanned trip to Bau. Still pretty much staying at home, not going anywhere.

Virgin Longhouse Experience at Batang Ai

Posted on January 15, 2017 By sweet surrender No Comments on Virgin Longhouse Experience at Batang Ai

Woke up in the morning, after breakfast, we headed to the jetty to go to one of the longhouses at the area.

Was greeted with this view… Magnificent! It reminds me of my trip to NZ lake district, Queenstown.

We went with longboat powered by outboard motor. It was such a hot morning, the sun was really bright and it stung. Sunscreen, cap, and remember to cover up to avoid getting sunburn. Luckily I have a scarf and jacket with me.

The lake is so huge that there is a need for directional signboard.

My virgin longhouse experience. My first time stepping into a longhouse. It sure is an eye opener.

Handicrafts on the wall for sell.

Left: The verandah where they dry their laundry and dry peppers or paddy.
Right: Had the opportunity to visit a “pintu”(door), it just like your normal house with living area, kitchen, bathroom. The bedroom will be at the living area as you can see from the photo, those at the corner are their mattress.

Some old jars in the house and the kitchen area.

Some of them still maintain the method of cooking using firewood. We had lunch in the longhouse, all the food prepared for us was cooked with firewood.

Left: Tilapia, a must to have. It’s smoked! Oh my! It was so yummy!!
Right: Ayam pansuh (bamboo chicken) and paku.

We were also being entertained by traditional dance and served with tuak. I only had a sip of it.

A photo for the album.

We went to have a look around the village and this photo on the right is the modern longhouse which made up of mostly concrete.

After longhouse visit, we went to the waterfall. The lake water is blue/green/turquoise in colour, very beautiful.

Did a bit of hike and we reached the waterfall. Goodness me… Mosquitoes were feasting on me!! -.-” This is the lower part of the waterfall. There’s a staircase to go up to another level great for dipping. I didn’t go up though, just too lazy. 😛

That’s about it on my Batang Ai trip. This is one activity can arrange with Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat when you are there.

Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat

Posted on January 8, 2017January 8, 2017 By sweet surrender No Comments on Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat

First post of 2017!

Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat used to be known as Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort. It used to be a very expensive to stay, a 5-star resort occupying a 20-hectare site on the shore of a spectacular mountain lake. A four-hour drive from Kuching, the resort can be accessed via transportation offered by local tour operators or self-drive.

The last leg of the journey is by motorized boat across the lake. My first time here last year. It’s no longer under Hilton. It’s now managed by Planet Borneo Lodge Management since January 2016.

The longhouse style resort nestles in the middle of the trees. It’s approximately 20 minutes boat ride to reach the resort.

Upon reaching the resort, you will need to do a bit walking walking uphill to reach the lobby.

Left: The lobby.
Right: The swimming pool. We were so tempted to jump in, it was such a hot day. I didn’t bring my swimsuit… Too bad…

Left: The longhouse we stayed. The “tanju” (verandah) is very spacious, it’s such a pity that there’s nothing there. However, it will be a great place to gather with your friends enjoying the breeze from the lake.

Right: My room, Twin bedroom. The room is dated, well…. What do you expect from a resort located in the middle of Batang Ai National Park, can only be accessed by boat and has been around for more than 2 decades. At least it’s clean.

The different sections of the room and the view from the verandah outside the room. Such magnificent view! The lake is huge!

We went for hike in the evening with our guide. The photo here shows one of the ancient graves. This 120-year-old grave belonged to a popular Iban chief, Jamit Ngumbang. After that, we headed to the canopy walk, 130m long and 50m above the ground. It’s not that bad. Not shaky, quite secure.

After a long day, we’re so hungry! Buffet dinner was served. I forgot to include the tilapia dish. It’s a must-have when you are here. Food was not bad. Love the baked apples. Looked sweet but not that sweet. It still maintain some of the texture, not mushy at all.

By the way, WiFi is only available at the lobby.

Overall, the place is good for those looking to escape the hectic life of the city. Staying a night or two here and joining the various nature and cultural activities or have a session of spa is great to unwind. The only thing is the property is quite dated, a refurbishment is needed which will also mean it will cost you more after refurbishment. There’s always good and bad. I would day, don’t expect too much of luxury, just enjoy the nature.

Miri Crocodile Farm cum Mini Zoo

Posted on December 26, 2016December 26, 2016 By sweet surrender No Comments on Miri Crocodile Farm cum Mini Zoo

Kuching has crocodile farm, Miri has crocodile farm too. It’s been around for over a decade.

I managed to visit it when I was there months back on a work assignment. My first time visiting Miri Crocodile Farm, it’s quite a distant from the city. You will definitely need to hire a transport to go there.

Here’s the address: Lot 164, 24Km Miri-Kuala Baram Road, 98000 Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Just gonna let the photos do the talking. Lots of crocodiles in there. You can also find monkeys, birds, deers, snakes, bears and etc.

It’s all crocodiles down there!! Big and small. This is how up-close you can get to the crocodiles.

Some birds… Isn’t that couple looked so loving? Hehehe…

Cages where you can find all sort of birds including hornbills.

Left: guinea pigs
Right: Pigeonholes

There are a number of crocodile species available and one of the monkeys in the cage. Not to forget they have albino crocodile aka white crocodile. I was too lazy to walk all the way to the cage for it, it’s too hot in Miri.

Meanwhile, you also have the opportunity to feed the animals there, you have to buy the food for sure, not inclusive of the entrance fee. Not so sure how much was the fee though.

Ever see or taste crocodile meat bak kut teh? They prepared some for us to sample but no one dared to try. I have no idea how it tasted.

There’s also a pond with this huge fish! It’s so huge, the king of the pond I must say. Isn’t the colour beautiful?

In fact I have a lot more photos but guess what?!?! I forgot to transfer them from my camera to the computer and deleted it. These are photos from my phone.

Imperial Palace Hotel, Miri

Posted on December 19, 2016December 19, 2016 By sweet surrender No Comments on Imperial Palace Hotel, Miri

Imperial Palace Hotel, Miri, a business 4-star hotel under Imperial Group of Hotels. The hotel is approximately 25-minute drive from Miri Airport. You can easily find retail shops, food & beverage outlets, supermarket and departmental stores, and entertainment outlets around it.

Had an opportunity to stay in this hotel few months back because of a work assignment.

Can’t remember the room type I’m staying though. It is spacious enough. Was bigger than I expected.

There’s bathtub cum shower in the bathroom. The toiletries were rather complete even provided toothbrush and toothpaste for the convenient of guests. Towels, facial tissues, and toilet rolls were all folded in fan shape. I guess that’s their standard, it sure requires time and effort for the housekeeping staff to get everything arranged this way.

Left: The basic tea/coffee making facility.

Right: My breakfast. They have quite a variety of selections from local to western. Make your own coffee and tea at the beverage machines available.

Staff service was good. Overall, it’s not a bad hotel to stay when you are in Miri.
