Langkawi (11 – 14 May 2014) – Part 3

Posted on July 29, 2014July 30, 2014 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Langkawi (11 – 14 May 2014) – Part 3

After a long wait, part 3 is finally here, our second day in Langkawi. We started our day early.

First, we hunted for breakfast. We came across Restoran Haji Ali (Lot 98, Pusat Perniagaan Kelana Mas, Kedah, 07000 Kuah, Pulau Langkawi) and decided to just settled our breakfast here. Since there were 3 Muslims in our group, so we had to go to halal places for meals throughout the whole trip.

Left: Fried Maggie Mee, no idea how much. Didn’t bother to check it out too hahaha…

Right: Roti Canai Kosong(RM0.90). First time I’m being served with cut up roti canai *LOL*

I don’t remember how much our breakfast was but we only ended up paying few Ringgit per person inclusive of drinks. So cheap!

After breakfast, we headed to Oriental Village (Telaga Harbour Park, 07000 Langkawi, Kedah) for the cable car ride. Too bad the skybridge was closed.

The views along the way…

We’re here!

We headed straight to the cable car ticketing counter. The ticket is cheaper if you’re Malaysian. I don’t remember how much though. Normal price is RM35 for return ticket.

Up up we go… This is my third cable car ride. First was years back in Genting, second was in New Zealand, third in Langkawi.

Left: So many people up there trying to take photos of the view and lots of selfie sticks too!

Right: Too bad the Skybridge is closed for maintenance.

We were lucky to go up earlier because it rained right after we’re done with our photo taking!

Since it rained, we left the place after doing a bit of souvenirs shopping. We headed to Cenang to find food.

We just simply find a place for lunch, ended up at D’Khas Cafe. You’ll be surprised with what we ordered ;p mostly fried rice!

Left: Pad Thai.

Right: Seafood Fried Rice (RM10).

Left: Pattaya Fried Rice (RM8).

Right: Prawn Fried Rice (RM10).

Left: Padprik beef with white rice (RM10 but not sure the rice was included or charged separately).

Right: Salted Fish Fried rice (RM6.50), I ordered this, the cheapest of all the dishes we had ordered. Taste? It tasted as it should.

The food is just normal, nothing to rave about. Just good enough to fill our empty stomachs.

Next up will be the Underwater World.

Langkawi (11 – 14 May 2014) – Part 2

Posted on July 5, 2014July 5, 2014 By sweet surrender 4 Comments on Langkawi (11 – 14 May 2014) – Part 2

Continue on from Part 1 after a long break about this trip… Goodness… I really can’t find the time and energy to do updates like I used to 🙁

We headed to Dataran Lang aka Eagle Square after lunch to see the famous statue of the eagle in Langkawi.

Seriously… At the entrance, there’s this annoying Milo jingle which stuck in your head. It took us quite awhile to figure out and we just laughing it away but it’s no longer funny when it repeat non-stop and making you nuts!

Jetty Point not far away where you can enjoy duty free shopping. The prices are the same as at the airport.

The statue area was packed with people trying to take photo with the eagle -.-” It was extremely hot too. Managed to take some photos and then we left to the beach.

Pantai Cenang, lovely sunset but hmm… The beach wasn’t as nice as I expected. Put too high expectations.

Time for dinner. Our dinner was rather late, if not mistaken it was 10pm+. Before that we went shopping around Cenang area. One thing for sure, no bargain allowed, no matter how you sweet talk them, the price will remain.

Left: We ended up Telaga Seafood Restaurant.

Right: Crab stir fried with chili sauce, very spicy! RM8/100gm.

Left: Telaga “3S’ Style fish dish. Not sure what fish is this and the price too, we just ordered ;p 3S stands for sweet, spicy, and sour.

Right: One of the fried rice ordered by our travel mate which I don’t remember what. They have a variety of fried rice which ranged between RM6.50-RM20.

Left: Kailan Oyster Sauce (RM7)
Right: Tom Yam Seafood Soup (RM18)

Overall, the food was just so-so. It did blow our budget for the day too.

That’s it for part 2, hopefully part 3 will come real soon. Wonder how long it will take me to complete writing about this trip?

The Haunted Hotel – From My Roommate Perspective

Posted on June 17, 2014June 17, 2014 By sweet surrender 7 Comments on The Haunted Hotel – From My Roommate Perspective

Remember my encounter with the haunted hotel in Bintulu last year? This time, it’s from my roommate perspective. Not going to be a long one.

Apparently, my roommate could sense these “things”, it’s a part of her. She didn’t tell me anything while we were in Bintulu. She only shared with me after we’re in Miri. On that night, she just kept quiet, pretended nothing happened. In fact, she already sensed something not right once arrived.

At the lobby, while waiting for check-in, I told her I wanted to go the toilet and asked her to accompany me but she didn’t want to. So I just hold until we reached our room.

In the room, I was on my laptop, we were waiting for the rest to get ready for dinner. While I was on my computer minding my own business, she actually heard our window was banged really hard. I didn’t hear a thing yet I was sitting next to the window! She heard dog howl too and I didn’t hear anything too! She just sat quietly next to me and didn’t say a thing.

Then I suddenly told her that I won’t dare to be in the room myself, she agreed but didn’t say much. On the way to Miri, she told me that it was strange that I actually said such thing that night. Came to think of it, indeed I’m not the kind that would say this kind of thing.

So basically this is from her perspective. She just forced herself to sleep that night. I was in the bathroom for quite long as I have a lot of things to do hahaha… I didn’t sensed anything amiss and just minding my own business even after my friend hinted me in FB. She just tried to keep herself entertained with TV on high volume and chatting with her friends on her phone. Even though we had moved to a new room, we still switched on the TV and all the lights to sleep until the morning.

The next morning, our travel mates told us that we would be checking out to another hotel because they experienced something. Phew… What a relief! With all that happened to the other people in our group, there is no way we could stay for another night. It’s just too much!

Next up, I’ll be sharing the experiences of my other travel mates who encountered the “things” first hand!

That’s all for now. Been really busy, hence the slow update.

Langkawi (11 – 14 May 2014) – Part 1

Posted on June 6, 2014June 4, 2014 By sweet surrender 3 Comments on Langkawi (11 – 14 May 2014) – Part 1

Last month, went to Langkawi for a short getaway. Exactly 3 months after I started work. Seriously needed a break and this came at the right time. Flight ticket for return trip was so cheap! Less than RM150 from Air Asia, no check-in luggage. Direct Kuching to Langkawi. Very worth it!

It’s my first trip with this group of friends, we only got to know each other on this trip. Out of 5, I only know 2 of them. All 6 of us on this trip, 3 girls, 3 guys.

We rented a car. You seriously need a car to move around Langkawi or you will have to hire someone to drive to go everywhere. It’s not that hard to drive there, the island is small too.

Views on the way to our motel at Kuah.

Arrived our accommodation but was shocked at first as there’s temple there. Were we in the right place? Is this a staying place or is this a temple? It’s correct. Not wrong. This motel is actually housed in the Hock Kien Kong Huay building. The temple is part of the Hokkien association.

Also, do not expect you’ll be greeted by a receptionist. You had to call the number displayed on the card on the table found there to get someone to come out to process your check-in.

View from our corridor.

The girls got Family Room that could fit 4 while the guys for Triple room. Lucky us hehehe… The 3 big guys had to squeeze in a small room while we 3 tiny girls in a big room ;p For all 6 of us, we split the room rental and each only paid RM100 or RM110 (don’t quite remember) for 3 days without breakfast! So cheap!!

They have water dispenser at the staircase if you need water. This is good enough. Must drink plenty of water while traveling what’s more Langkawi was extremely hot last month!

The shower and toilet are in one, very spacious. Towels are provided. Generally the place is clean enough for the price you’re paying.

After check-in, we went to hunt for lunch.

We went to Langkawi Parade which is not too far from our staying place to hunt for lunch while surveying the prices of the items.

Had beef burger at MC Corner. This is only RM3.80! Super duper filling! The size was bigger than expected. Not a very bad deal. Taste was ok too.

The view of the sea from the carpark. Isn’t it pretty?

Part 2 will come soon *finger crossed*

Gawai with a Difference

Posted on May 30, 2014 By sweet surrender No Comments on Gawai with a Difference

Gawai is around the corner. It’s gonna be a long weekend for Sarawak starting 1st June. Sabah too as they are celebrating their Hari Kaamatan on 31st May. These two states situated in the Borneo Island are very different from West Malaysia. Not many people know about us even the Malaysians themselves.

I’m half Bidayuh. Gawai to me is no stranger. When I was young, my parents would go back to my mother’s kampung for celebrations. We never stayed overnight though. Basically the day would be spent visiting. Since my mother’s kampung is under Seventh Day Adventist, they don’t eat pork and they don’t make tuak. This is what makes it different from the non-SDA’s kampung. There’s a series of events during that period of time as part of the Gawai celebrations. I remember my mother ever asked me whether I’m interested in joining the kumang gawai contest ;p

Talking about Gawai, I’ll be experience Gawai the Lun Bawang way. Means I’m flying off this Saturday to celebrate Gawai at Ba’kelalan with the other media people. It will be my first time experiencing a very different celebration far away from Kuching. This is gonna be interesting.

Meanwhile, do check out Kaamatan&Gawai 2014 by Petronas. You will learn a lot especially about the Iban and Dusun community. I learnt a lot from these videos as those are the things I’ve never experience partly because my mother’s kampung is a more modern one and because they are under SDA. Also, Bidayuh doesn’t live in longhouse. Frankly, I don’t think I can survive in the environment shown in the video hehehe…

Do stay tuned to my coming Gawai post 😉

Update: This post was composed few days ago, my latest status is that I will be in Kuching for Gawai, no more trip to Ba’kelalan due to flight change and work commitment stopped me from going 🙁 Anyway, at least I get to attend an event on 1st of June which I was actually looking forward to and was torn between these two offers. At least I don’t have to make any decision now, the answer is already there, no decision to make anymore.
