My journey in discovering myself in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia while fulfilling my dream to study overseas.

J Restaurant

Posted on September 27, 2011September 28, 2011 By sweet surrender 1 Comment on J Restaurant

A coursemate treated us for a dinner before exam. We’re all slaving away in the computer pool before that. When dinner time came, we all went for dinner at J Restaurant serves Cantonese cuisine. It is located at Grote Street. Same row as Time Supermarket. When I reached there I was like OMG-this-is-gonna-be-expensive! The interior looked so posh!

There were 4 of us and these were the food we ordered. Will try my best to identify them as I wasn’t the one who ordered the food. Didn’t bring my camera too so I used my phone to take the photos, that explains the horrible colour of the photos.

Left: This is Sauteed Potato, Eggplant and Capsicum ($10.80). I love this! There’s a balance of sweet and salty also I love potato and capsicum. Yummy!

Right: Ox Tripe with Chilli and Soy Sauce ($6.80). I don’t remember it’s spicy or not. I guess it’s not spicy enough to make me remember the spiciness hahaha…

Left: Cucumber and Black Fungus with Garlic Sauce ($4.80).

Right: Half Shanghai Style Crispy Duck ($16.80), Best eaten hot and with the sauce. Once it’s cold it can be pretty oily.

Left: Steamed Pipis and Egg Dish ($12.80), quite salty but great to eat with rice.

Overall the food was not bad and the prices of the food were reasonable. In fact, the food we had can actually fed 5 or 6 people instead of 4.

Festival of Innovation 2011

Posted on September 26, 2011September 27, 2011 By sweet surrender 1 Comment on Festival of Innovation 2011

Yesterday was my last day of holiday. Class starts today. On my last day of holiday, I spent it at UniSA Mawson Lakes Campus volunteering for the Festival of Innovation.

It’s my first time going to this campus. My friend and I actually missed the stop, we took the wrong bus ;p We thought the bus would stop there but it didn’t. Phew… Luckily I noticed the sign “Mawson Lakes” earlier on and sensed something amiss after seeing the bus stop number reaching 47! I immediately asked the driver where we should alight. We quickly got off the next stop and went to the opposite side of the road to catch another bus there. Good thing we were in time as the next bus came at 11.50am, we were only few minutes away to 11.50am! If we missed this, we would have to wait till 12.50pm! We’ll be late for our job by then as our shift started at 1pm.

I think this will be my first and last time here…

So must take photos ;p

Walking into the university compound. It really felt like going to university unlike my campus. City West felt like a college but Mawson Lakes really gave me the feel of going to a university.

If I’m not mistaken, this is the largest campus of UniSA. This is where civil aviation, engineering, computing, and all those technical programmes are conducted.

Left: Here I am! Mawson Lakes! Generally this campus has more male students due to the faculties located here which are almost male dominated field of studies. I was told by one of the students that there’s only one female student in his class! WOW!

Right: A section of the event.

Left: If I’m doing something related to my bachelor degree, I would be based in this campus. It’s huge but very inconvenient unlike the city. I think I wouldn’t be able to venture out more or having fun like what I’m having now if I study here. Too far and out of the way unless I drive.

Right: Me in the t-shirt 😉 the sun was so bright but the wind was soooo cold! Taken during my lunch.

Left: The balloons they’re giving out hehehe… Matching colour. I was at the welcome booth working as the counter. It wasn’t as happening as UniSA Open Day though, not many people. I guess it’s just too far and it’s only concentrated on things related to this campus.

Right: The booths. I didn’t get to tour the campus and also check out the event because I couldn’t venture anywhere as a counter. Some more, reached there later than expected due to the wrong bus we took, so there’s no time to explore. Got ourselves registered, had lunch and start work in half hour.

It’s a good thing we didn’t have to take a bus back to the city as one of the volunteers offered to send us back since he had to go through the city to get home.

Overall, it’s a great experience even though the responsibility wasn’t that heavy, the job was quite simple too. At least, I finally get to step into this campus since I’ve been hearing so much about it. I have a friend studying in this campus and many of my friends were students here. Haven’t got the chance to visit Magill(can take a bus from the city, if I’m taking journalism, I’ll be here) and Whyalla(need to take a plane or four to five-hour drive by car or long distant bus, waaaay too far) campuses yet.

That’s how I spent my last day of holiday. No more holiday until December.

Brunelli’s Cafe @ Rundle Street

Posted on September 24, 2011September 24, 2011 By sweet surrender No Comments on Brunelli’s Cafe @ Rundle Street

Went to Brunelli for dessert after dinner quite a long time ago… Sometime last month after having dinner at Culshaw’s Grill.

Brunelli’s Cafe is located at Rundle Stree. It was packed on a Saturday night. They have freshly made gelati too, very colourful!

Chocolates and cakes… *drool*

These were just some of what we had, didn’t manage to take photo of all of them:

Left: Custard Canoli (AUD3.50)
Right: Blueberry Cheesecake (AUD5.90)

Left: Extremely cute and green! Apple-something, I don’t remember the name hehehe… This was great! Not sweet at all instead it felt quite refreshing. There’s two macarons, big and small on top.
Right: Seriously I don’t remember what are these ;p I think one is ice coffee(AUD5.50) another one might be Frappe Coffee(AUD5.50).

I don’t know these too ;p

Was there till 11pm. Wanted to stay longer but they were closing. After that we headed home.

Malaysian Carnival 2011

Posted on September 22, 2011September 24, 2011 By sweet surrender No Comments on Malaysian Carnival 2011

Malaysian Carnival happened on 11/9/2011 at Victoria Square, Adelaide.

I decided to go there to have a look and to meet up with some friends after my brain got too saturated with my revision.

There’s food stall selling Malaysian cuisines and also booths with information about Malaysia.

They had a Malay wedding showcase that day.

I was there standing near the stage and I saw someone, Chef Wan! I didn’t know it was him, I thought he’s someone who looked like him, I didn’t dare to approach him until when he’s called to go up the stage then confirmed that’s him! I took the opportunity to take photo with him. All these while only saw him on TV.

After that, I went home.

Moon Lantern Festival in Adelaide 2011

Posted on September 21, 2011September 21, 2011 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Moon Lantern Festival in Adelaide 2011

I decided to combine these 3 events in one post because there’s too many pending posts and these 3 are related to the same topic ;p

This year, my mid-autumn celebration is different from what I usually had back home. We don’t really celebrate back home actually. It’s called the Moon Lantern Festival here.

First celebration happened on 10/9/2011. I had it with my colleagues at a Chinese restaurant somewhere in the suburb. I got no idea where it’s located ;p I forgot to check the name of the place too. We took a bus there. My first time having abalone. Very chewy, what’s so nice about it? It’s just seafood to me hahaha…

I ate so much that day. Non-stop eating since lunch as after lunch I had a group revision session and we were eating chips and tarts while doing our revision. Then at dinner, ate again. I’m not sure of the exact name of the food though, just giving the general names. Here’s drunken chicken and prawn balls.

So much food in a day! Softshell crab and fish.

Kailan and duck.

Left: Red bean pastry.
Right: After dinner, we went to our boss’ house for dessert! GOSH! Ate non-stop again until 12am+. There’s cakes, jelly, mooncakes, chocolate fondue, fruits, tong sui(sweet soup) and more! Reached home at about 12.30am.

Photos with colleagues aka friends. This is just 1/3 of them, there’s another 2 tables. All Malaysians.

Then, on the actual day itself, 12/9/2011, I had exam! Good thing it’s open book exam but it’s not that easy as expected as what came out mostly weren’t what we had expected -.-” So I just crapped. Then again, it’s common sense, should be fine.

We had our exam at Allan Scott Park, this is where the horse racing event takes place in Adelaide. When we arrived, we took so many photos *LOL* As if we’re the tourists and not there for exam ;p

My first time visiting a horse racing venue.

Love the view of the mountain.

With my coursemates. Two coursemates aren’t in the photos, that’s how small the class was. Only 7 of us for this subject. Others were so stressed out waiting for the exam to start yet we’re there camwhoring! How crazy, studied till too stress ;p In the exam hall, our class was only a small fraction of the number of people sitting for exam.

After exam, my friend and I headed to the Torrens River for the Moon Lantern celebration event but we’re too late. People were cleaning up the place already. Ended at 8pm if not mistaken but we were only there at 9.30pm+. Oh well… What to do? We had our exam while people were celebrating. The event could put Malaysia’s celebration to shame hahaha… It’s HUGE and started at 3pm. There’s HUGE stage setup and 10 minutes fireworks! Too bad I missed it.

So we both just walked along the river basking under the moonlight with each other while the rest were couples enjoying each others’ company by holding hands, kissing, hugging and so on. So lonely… It made us so miserable seeing all that hahaha… Hopefully our singlehood will end soon with the blessing of the moon that night *LOL*

That’s how I celebrate my Moon Latern Festival aka Mooncake Festival aka Mid-autumn Festival in Adelaide.
