Category: Finding Myself – Adelaide

My journey in discovering myself in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia while fulfilling my dream to study overseas.

Big Wang BBQ

Posted on May 28, 2013May 29, 2013 By sweet surrender No Comments on Big Wang BBQ

If not mistaken, this is my final Adelaide food post. After this post, there won’t be anything about Adelaide anymore. That’s the end of my almost 2 years adventure. Maybe, this also means I should let go of all the past, live in the present and starting to plot my future seriously after almost 3 months coming back. I’m still quite blur and wondering on where to go next. Anyway, let’s talk about the food.

Big Wang BBQ (305 Morphett St, Adelaide, SA 5000) was quite new when I went there with my Chinese friends for my farewell dinner. It’s so seclude and not obvious at all.

Left: The interior is very simple, not much of decorations. However, please be prepared to smell like BBQ infused with cumin spice after dining here.
Right: Beansprout (AUD5.80), it tasted as it should. Nothing to rave about it. Portion wise was average.

These are just part of what we ordered, chicken, lamb, mushroom, and some internal organs of chicken and pig, and so on. All tasted the same as it’s using the same spice. My friends were very happy with it. It wasn’t bad. We’re stuffed to the brim as we ordered too much for only 5 of us. As for the price, it’s reasonable. All in all I think we spent almost AUD100 for this meal includive of drinks. You need to drink plenty of water eating this.

It was okay for our experience. Will go back if there’s chance but it seemed like there’s many negative feedbacks on it these days. Hmm…

La Bonne Table

Posted on May 24, 2013May 25, 2013 By sweet surrender No Comments on La Bonne Table

Almost, almost… One more post to go for my Adelaide’s food post.

Another farewell dinner, this was for me and the another friend, we had it at La Bonne Table (128 Wakefield St, Adelaide, SA 5000).

Left: Extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dip with the bread.
Right: Oyster Plate, Natural (a dozen – AUD19). My first time had fresh oyster in Adelaide was last year in September, this was my second time. *SLURP*

Left: L.B.T crispy skin chicken in sweet soy glaze (AUD6), it’s nice but a bit too salty for me, still it’s not bad, heard that it’s a must-have when you’re there.

Right: Don’t remember what’s this, a type of pasta dish. According to my friend, it’s rather loaded in expensive ingredients, can be a bit too much of good thing in a plate.

Left: 250gm MSA sir-loin, saute potato, Roquefort butter (AUD27).

Right: I ordered Grilled Salmon, saffron and crab risotto (AUD26), this is nice, just a little bit too much of saffron and the salmon is a bit too small, we’re a bit shocked with the size actually hahaha…

Left: Crumbled pork rib eye, calvados glazed apple, roasted new potato (AUD26).

Right: The menu. I found the menu a bit confusing, need to take time to really look at it carefully to understand the categorization on which is what.

Overall, the food was good loaded with a tad too much of expensive ingredients, price was average for place like this. Environment was great too. It can be rather stuffy because of the high ceiling on a hot summer night.

Nghi Ngan Quan

Posted on May 20, 2013May 21, 2013 By sweet surrender No Comments on Nghi Ngan Quan

One of my farewell dinners was at Nghi Ngan Quan (Shop 4/34 Wright St, Ferryden Park, SA 5010). I came here before with another group of friends but we ended up leaving the place because it’s not what we’re looking for. Who knows, this time I ended up here with my church’s friends after I told them I wanted to have Vietnamese food before going back because there’s none back home. So they suggested this place. According to them, it’s one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Adelaide.

Left: I’m not sure what’s this for, to go with what *LOL* Maybe it’s for the spicy pho.
Right: To be added to the pho.

Combination cold rolls (AUD16), do it yourself. Must share this with at least 3 people, a lot!

Left: Quail (AUD7/serve)
Right: Vietnamese salad with prawns, jellyfish and lotus rhizome (AUD15).

Left: Broken rice special combination (small-AUD11, large-AUD12).
Right: Spicy pork and beef noodle soup (small-AUD9.00, large-AUD10.00, extra large-AUD11.00).

Left: Special combination beef noodle soup (small-AUD9.00, large-AUD10.00, extra large-AUD11.00).
Right: Durian smoothie (AUD4). You can only get durian smoothie (real durian!) in Vietnamese eateries.

Overall, the food was great. The pho is different from all the other Vietnamese establishments I’ve been to. Very strong spice taste. I don’t quite like it. Price wise, it’s pretty standard. Environment wise, it’s classier compared to the others.

Cocolat

Posted on May 17, 2013May 20, 2013 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Cocolat

Food post of Adelaide is back! Few more to go… Cocolat, Adelaide’s very own dessert cafe specialising in the art of chocolate indulgences and wicked desserts.

All of their products are hand-made from the finest ingredients in their Balhannah kitchen based in the beautiful Adelaide Hills. Friends had been talking about it for ages, and it’s also available in the airport.

Guess what? I only went there on my last day in Adelaide! What’s more, it’s just down where I lived! This one is located at Rundle Street.

Left: Cocolat’s Award Winning Gelato.
Right: Tiramisu, very sweet! My friend loved it a lot! Very chocolatey too!

We ordered their frappe but frankly nothing special about it hmmm… Maybe should order their house specialty.

Overall, the environment is nice. It’s a bit on the pricey side. I was so full that time to try anything. At least I managed to go there before I say goodbye to Adelaide.

Chocolate Bean

Posted on May 1, 2013May 1, 2013 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Chocolate Bean

Back to Adelaide’s food post. Few more to go before I’m done with it. It’s been 2 months coming back and I’m still struggling to settle down.

Anyway, back to the main topic. I was told about Chocolate Bean but couldn’t locate it until one of my friends brought me there. It’s so near to where I lived yet I couldn’t find it because it’s in the small lane. I tried locating it via Google but I’m a map and direction idiot ;p. It’s less than 5 minutes walk from my place only *LOL*

Very cosy place. Love it! It’s located at 18 Union Street East End, Adelaide.

Left: I don’t quite remember what’s this. Extremely chocolatey! It’s a bit too much for me but we’re sharing so it’s fine. It should be chocolate mud cake.
Right: Lemon cheesecake. This is nice too. Just enough to even out the chocolate mud cake sweetness.

Left: White Chocolate Tea (AUD4.50), heavenly! I LOVE IT!!! Too bad… No more chance to go anymore as I only discovered it 2 weeks before I left. 🙁 I don’t know how to explain the taste but it’s not as heavy as chocolate and not as light as tea. Not too sweet too. Tasted slightly like milk tea but not milk tea. So hard to explain, you have to try it yourself to know.

Right: Dark Chocolate Tea (AUD4.50), not bad too but still prefer White Chocolate Tea.

I went there 3 times in 2 weeks! My final 2 weeks in Adelaide. Couldn’t get enough of it.

Highly recommended!

Why do you want to dig that far?
