Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat

Posted on January 8, 2017January 8, 2017 By sweet surrender No Comments on Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat

First post of 2017!

Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat used to be known as Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort. It used to be a very expensive to stay, a 5-star resort occupying a 20-hectare site on the shore of a spectacular mountain lake. A four-hour drive from Kuching, the resort can be accessed via transportation offered by local tour operators or self-drive.

The last leg of the journey is by motorized boat across the lake. My first time here last year. It’s no longer under Hilton. It’s now managed by Planet Borneo Lodge Management since January 2016.

The longhouse style resort nestles in the middle of the trees. It’s approximately 20 minutes boat ride to reach the resort.

Upon reaching the resort, you will need to do a bit walking walking uphill to reach the lobby.

Left: The lobby.
Right: The swimming pool. We were so tempted to jump in, it was such a hot day. I didn’t bring my swimsuit… Too bad…

Left: The longhouse we stayed. The “tanju” (verandah) is very spacious, it’s such a pity that there’s nothing there. However, it will be a great place to gather with your friends enjoying the breeze from the lake.

Right: My room, Twin bedroom. The room is dated, well…. What do you expect from a resort located in the middle of Batang Ai National Park, can only be accessed by boat and has been around for more than 2 decades. At least it’s clean.

The different sections of the room and the view from the verandah outside the room. Such magnificent view! The lake is huge!

We went for hike in the evening with our guide. The photo here shows one of the ancient graves. This 120-year-old grave belonged to a popular Iban chief, Jamit Ngumbang. After that, we headed to the canopy walk, 130m long and 50m above the ground. It’s not that bad. Not shaky, quite secure.

After a long day, we’re so hungry! Buffet dinner was served. I forgot to include the tilapia dish. It’s a must-have when you are here. Food was not bad. Love the baked apples. Looked sweet but not that sweet. It still maintain some of the texture, not mushy at all.

By the way, WiFi is only available at the lobby.

Overall, the place is good for those looking to escape the hectic life of the city. Staying a night or two here and joining the various nature and cultural activities or have a session of spa is great to unwind. The only thing is the property is quite dated, a refurbishment is needed which will also mean it will cost you more after refurbishment. There’s always good and bad. I would day, don’t expect too much of luxury, just enjoy the nature.

Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017

Posted on December 31, 2016December 31, 2016 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017

I just got back from a short Singapore and Batam getaway. Not counting down in Singapore, I’m not into such activity. I think I might be asleep already by the time the clock strikes 12 *LOL*

This video is fresh out of the oven, taken few hours ago when I was on my way back to Kuching from Singapore. Looked out of the window and saw the logo of MH. Kite is meant to fly, the “wau” on the tip of the wing sure is flying in the sky. I just couldn’t help it and quickly took video of it. In fact we’re almost descending when I realized how amazing and meaningful the view was.

The first minute of the video is just the wing of the plane, after that I took some bird eye views of our beloved land, Sarawak. All these while, I only took photo, this is my first time taking a video of it. Maybe, I should go get a wing too. Maybe…

2017 might not be a good year in terms of economic situation, seeing the “wau” soaring high, hopefully things will take a better turn in a way, there’s always a silver lining. May the new year brings new hope to you.

Happy 2017!

Miri Crocodile Farm cum Mini Zoo

Posted on December 26, 2016December 26, 2016 By sweet surrender No Comments on Miri Crocodile Farm cum Mini Zoo

Kuching has crocodile farm, Miri has crocodile farm too. It’s been around for over a decade.

I managed to visit it when I was there months back on a work assignment. My first time visiting Miri Crocodile Farm, it’s quite a distant from the city. You will definitely need to hire a transport to go there.

Here’s the address: Lot 164, 24Km Miri-Kuala Baram Road, 98000 Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Just gonna let the photos do the talking. Lots of crocodiles in there. You can also find monkeys, birds, deers, snakes, bears and etc.

It’s all crocodiles down there!! Big and small. This is how up-close you can get to the crocodiles.

Some birds… Isn’t that couple looked so loving? Hehehe…

Cages where you can find all sort of birds including hornbills.

Left: guinea pigs
Right: Pigeonholes

There are a number of crocodile species available and one of the monkeys in the cage. Not to forget they have albino crocodile aka white crocodile. I was too lazy to walk all the way to the cage for it, it’s too hot in Miri.

Meanwhile, you also have the opportunity to feed the animals there, you have to buy the food for sure, not inclusive of the entrance fee. Not so sure how much was the fee though.

Ever see or taste crocodile meat bak kut teh? They prepared some for us to sample but no one dared to try. I have no idea how it tasted.

There’s also a pond with this huge fish! It’s so huge, the king of the pond I must say. Isn’t the colour beautiful?

In fact I have a lot more photos but guess what?!?! I forgot to transfer them from my camera to the computer and deleted it. These are photos from my phone.

Imperial Palace Hotel, Miri

Posted on December 19, 2016December 19, 2016 By sweet surrender No Comments on Imperial Palace Hotel, Miri

Imperial Palace Hotel, Miri, a business 4-star hotel under Imperial Group of Hotels. The hotel is approximately 25-minute drive from Miri Airport. You can easily find retail shops, food & beverage outlets, supermarket and departmental stores, and entertainment outlets around it.

Had an opportunity to stay in this hotel few months back because of a work assignment.

Can’t remember the room type I’m staying though. It is spacious enough. Was bigger than I expected.

There’s bathtub cum shower in the bathroom. The toiletries were rather complete even provided toothbrush and toothpaste for the convenient of guests. Towels, facial tissues, and toilet rolls were all folded in fan shape. I guess that’s their standard, it sure requires time and effort for the housekeeping staff to get everything arranged this way.

Left: The basic tea/coffee making facility.

Right: My breakfast. They have quite a variety of selections from local to western. Make your own coffee and tea at the beverage machines available.

Staff service was good. Overall, it’s not a bad hotel to stay when you are in Miri.

Nanjing Fuzimiao

Posted on December 12, 2016December 12, 2016 By sweet surrender No Comments on Nanjing Fuzimiao

Fuzimiao in Nanjing is one of the tourist attractions in Nanjing. Went there way back in July!

Nanjing Fuzimiao (Chinese: 南京夫子廟) or Fuzimiao (Chinese: 夫子廟; literally: “Confucian Temple”), is located in southern Nanjing City on banks of the Qinhuai River. Within the area are cultural attractions, arts, shopping, and entertainment.

It sure is one very popular tourist attractions. So many people! You can see many old buildings that normally you just see in old Chinese drama series/movies.

It was a place to worship and consecrate Confucius, a great philosopher and educator of ancient China.

Wall of the Temple of Confucius.

This is the place where you can learn how ancient Chinese governments choose officials and all the other related history.

Nanjing Fuzimiao has had a national reputation since 1034 in the Ming Dynasty and it was greatly promoted in the Qing Dynasty. In the two dynasties, Fuzimiao was a thriving commercial and entertainment center emersed in rich culture and arts. It is said that in the time of Qing, the streets in this area had a total length of more than 10 Li (equal to five km) with countless shops, restaurants, bars and hotels, lining up two sides of these streets with colorful signs and lights. The streets were frequented everyday by travelers, wealthy merchants, and royal members in casual clothes.

In 1985, the municipal government spent millions to renovate the whole area. It’s also now a center for shopping, dining and entertainment.

Night view of Qin Huai River at Fuzimiao.

We had our dinner in one of the restaurants there. Can’t remember the name. This is a set of samplers of all the Nanjing local street food for 1 pax. Too full! Don’t be cheated be all these small plates of food. We couldn’t finish them! More than 20 types to try. These are just a portion, some were eaten to make space for more dishes. I can’t remember the price though, not cheap. Truth to be told, it’s better to eat them elsewhere.

This is the only attractions I went when I was there as we didn’t stay long there and also because we’re there for work.
