Penang Day 3 – Part 3: Fort Cornwallis

Posted on October 31, 2008October 11, 2013 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Penang Day 3 – Part 3: Fort Cornwallis

After the temples, we went to Fort Cornwallis at Gurney. You will learn about the history of Francis Light and so on.

We parked the car along the road which this view is just on the left.

There we went to get ourselves educated about history. I forgot all of them already, it’s a refresher course ;p Still I don’t remember much except the name Francis Light. The entrance is not free, you have to pay. It’s RM3.

Various rooms showcasing artifacts.

Left: This is the pamphlet you will get after you pay. It got all the information in there but I didn’t read. It’s still in my luggage ;p
Right: Staircase leading to… (any word you like to put)

Left: Leading to this! ;p A cannon and view of the sea.
Right: More cannon.

Left, middle: You can pose with the gun and hat. ARG! I failed! Trying to act cool but fail miserably! I should just hold the gun up, instead I tried to act cool like blowing it after shooting, CHEH CRAZY! It’s more like I’m playing some musical instrument. *LOL*
Right: The camps, they are showing you how the British set them up at the fort last time.

Lastly, this is Francis Light’s letter. See the handwriting!?!?! It’s real! It’s not fake. They stored it inside the glass displaying unit. Is this handwriting of a human? I’m sure many of you will say that it’s more like coming out from computer. *LOL* WOW! If only I can write like this.

Next up will be temple post again… Busy, busy, busy…

Penang Day 3 – Part 2: Burmese Buddhist Temple

Posted on October 29, 2008October 11, 2013 By sweet surrender 8 Comments on Penang Day 3 – Part 2: Burmese Buddhist Temple

Extremely busy this week!! -.-”

After visiting Thailand, it’s Myanmar’s turn now. *LOL* It’s actually Burmese Buddhist Temple. Nothing much but it’s so much bigger than Thai Buddhist Temple.

There were so many photo opportunities there. The statues, the surrounding, the architecture, the colours… I just simple show you some. Didnt’ even bother the good and bad photos hahaha…

Corridor leading to the one of the worship chamber. People also clipped money on the tree as a donation. As for me, you think I will clip one? NOOO!! I’m so stingy hahaha…

The surrounding.

The wishing pond. It’s quite special. Notice the middle of the pond? That structure actually turn and turn and turn and there are bowls attached on it. Each bowl represents different thing such as wealth, luck, health etc. You can try your luck to throw your coin(s) into one of the turning bowls or even more if you have more coins and you are very good in aiming *LOL* Again, I don’t do this thing hahaha…

Huge glode, I’m so small… Next is actually a bell that you can ring. Does ring sounded wrong for bell? It’s weird, bell rings, correct right? However, this bell is so big, do we use ring? I can’t think now! Hahaha…

This is the very, very popular ice cream you can get somewhere outside the Thai and Burmese temples. Coconut ice cream, very refreshing! You must try this out. I don’t know how much but it’s definitely worths your money.

Next post will not be a temple post but after that it wil be again! ;p

Penang Day 3 – Part 1: Sun Yat-Sen, Breakfast, 2 Temples

Posted on October 28, 2008October 11, 2013 By sweet surrender 5 Comments on Penang Day 3 – Part 1: Sun Yat-Sen, Breakfast, 2 Temples

Visited many places in day 3. Majority were temples. There are so many temples in Penang! It’s temple day on day 3 *LOL*

Now we venture into town instead of at Batu Feringghi area. At first we went to a very popular kopitiam that serves those cha siew, pork, duck, chicken rice but some of their food weren’t ready yet. So we went to visit Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Centre Penang, just next to it only. Only a small lane and the memorial centre’s wall divides them.

We were lucky to have the staff there explaining to us about Sun Yat-Sen. Did you know that he had a wife in Penang? Not many people know this. NO photos allowed in the gallery which is in the process of expanding. However, managed to sneakily took a photo of the small, cosy and very romantic setting restaurant located behind the gallery(photo on the right) with my phone. Nice right?

After we finished the visit, we went back to the kopitiam for our brunch.

I have no idea about the name ;p However, I’m sure Penang kia will know since they are very popular, just next door of the memorial centre. The set you see here is for one person only! Imagine 6 sets of this?

Guess how much it cost us? Including drinks only RM39.60! OMG! Such big portion and only cost this little. HEY! Tell me where can you get this kind of portion in Kuching? The soup was really SYIOK! Very appetising and the meat consisted of chicken, gong chiang(pig intestine stuffed with various pork parts), and three layer meat. This meal was really heavy and it lasted us one whole afternoon even until the evening and we didn’t feel hungry.

After that, we started our temples tour.

First stop, was a temple. I’m not sure about the name but heard that it’s some sort college for those that want to study Buddhism. The Bodhi tree was the main attraction. The weather was extremely hot and we went under the tree, it was so cooling! No wonder Buddha sat there to meditate. Heard that the tree was flown all the way to Penang and planted here but of course this is not the real tree Buddha sat under ;p It’s just the same type.

After that, we went to Thai Buddhist Temple. This is where the Sleeping Buddha located.

Those that like buildings or architectures will definitely visit all these temples because the architecture is very unique. Photography enthusiasts will sure love it too.

Entrance to the temple where the HUGE Sleeping Buddha is sleeping ;p

There you go… Say hi to him hahaha…

you can light the lotus candles by buying it from the temple. You can also play with the Wheel of Fortune. Only 50 cents. I didn’t play. Just put your 50-cent coin into the slot then it will turn and stop at a number. Find the number in the box and take out one piece of the paper, that’s your result.

Next up, more temples!

Penang Day 2 – Part 5: Dinner and a Birthday Party

Posted on October 27, 2008October 11, 2013 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Penang Day 2 – Part 5: Dinner and a Birthday Party

We went back early to have a rest and dinner before heading to a birthday party. After freshened up, played some simple boardgames, had a nap, off we went out to hunt for dinner.

The night view of part of Batu Feringghi. Lots of eateries there. There’s also night market along the whole stretch of road.

We reached Long Beach, recommended by our friend. Also asked us to looked out for the grilled buttered prawn.

We ordered grape ice blended, orange ice blended, pineapple ice blended, and watermelon juice. The ice blended in only RM4, and the juice is RM2.50(if not mistaken). The fruit juice is extremely cheap!

Left: A type of popiah, quite nice. No idea how much ;p I heard it’s Hainan Popiah but not sure.

Right: Mushroom soup. No idea how it tasted but I heard it’s so-so hahaha…

Left: Garlic Chicken Chop, very tasty! I’m the kind that don’t really like garlic but this is really tasty!

Right: O jien aka oyster omelette. Lots of oysters, very generous portion of oyster. You definitely can’t get this portion in Kuching with such price. I have no idea how much but it’s so much cheaper than what you can get in Kuching. Still, I prefer dry type ;p which I didn’t see any in Penang.

Left: Cha kueh tiaw, the only cha kueh tiaw we had during our stay there ;p

Right: The grilled buttered prawn that our friend recommended, I don’t remember how much but this kind of prawn won’t be cheap in Kuching. The price there is so much more cheaper than Kuching but I have no idea how much ;p It’s very salty but not bad.

After our dinner, we went back to our place and it rained! WAH! Lucky us! Else we’ll be WET as our car parked so far. It rained so heavily the whole night. Off we went to Minny‘s birthday party. This is the only blogger I met in Penang hehehe…

We reached there and there were so many people. Hung out and had some junk food. When the clock hitted 12, everyone sang birthday song and series of camwhoring started hehehe… She is TALL! She had to kneel down a bit to have photo with me. I’m so short… ;p At around 12.30am, we left as we need to wake up early the next day for our day 3 “adventure”.

Didn’t manage to meet other bloggers because of time constraint and worst still no contact number given to me! 😛

Finally end of day 2 hehehe… Don’t worry, you will get more parts in day 3(I think… ;p)

Penang Day 2 – Part 4: Back to Nature, Tropical Spice Garden

Posted on October 26, 2008October 11, 2013 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Penang Day 2 – Part 4: Back to Nature, Tropical Spice Garden

Not as promised, I can’t add in the dinner and birthday post because it’s too long *LOL* So you will be expecting a part 5 coming tomorrow.

Was hungry after visiting the dam and Penang Forestry Museum. Went to an islamic coffee shop at Batu Feringghi for tea break. We had roti canai and teh tarik. I thought I had captured the name of the coffee shop but NO!! All I can tell you is that it’s opposite Kahleel(I hope I got the spelling right ;p), a food court runs by the Indians and they have so many branches around Penang. You will sure not miss it. It’s near End of the World seafood restaurant(will blog about it in other post).

The curry was not bad but the roti canai wasn’t in very good presentation ;p Price wise I think it should be much cheaper than Kuching. No idea, I didn’t pay hahaha…

After we’re done eating, we went to Tropical Spice Garden. I’m not sure whether you need to pay to go in or not because I saw the signboard but we didn’t see anyone paying. Hmm… No idea, or our friend had paid for us? The entrance is definitely not cheap. It’s RM13 per adult. We didn’t go to the garden and trailer ride, I guess this means we don’t have to pay unless we are going into those two places.

View of the Spice Museum, so small -.-” Smaller than my house.

Left: Cinammon on sale at the Gift Shop. Thought of buying something from there but at the end, went back empty handed because no idea what to buy hehehe… There’s many type of potpourri and even spice soaps that are nicely wrapped.

Right: Some equipments hanging on top of the museum’s ceiling.

Hmm… So, do you think RM13 to see this kind of thing is worth it? I don’t think they did pay for the entrance fee. If they did, we should be visiting more places there but we were only at the cafe area, the shop and the little musuem.

The view from across the road. Nice view but at the same time really scary. Honestly being greeted with this view everyday was making me a bit sad thinking of the tragedy that happened last time since part of Penang was hit by it before too.

Anyway, I do enjoy my stay in Penang especially the food. Part 5 will come tomorrow.
