Bumbu Cabe

Posted on March 9, 2016March 9, 2016 By sweet surrender No Comments on Bumbu Cabe

Want some Sundanese cuisine? You can get it from Bumbu Cabe at iCom Square (Ground Floor, Parcel B128 & B129, Block B, Icom Square, Jalan Pending, 93450 Kuching) or Cityone. The place is always packed! Some said the food are expensive, some said it’s reasonable. For me, I would agree with the latter. A reminder though, the food is consider spicy to quite a lot of people.

Left: The sambal set that will be given to you once you’re seated.

Right: Rice served in stainless steel pot. We ordered white rice. There’s also other type of rice to order.

After you’re seated, go to the area where food are displayed. Tell the staff your table number and order the food there. What you see here is the amount of food for one portion. For each, we only ordered one portion. The price ranges around RM6/portion. They have a wide variety of vegetables to meat for you to choose.

We had potato strips, chicken, and eggplant with sambal. All were delicious. We were stuffed! Don’t underestimate the portion, it looked small but took the 3 of us (average eaters) quite a fair bit of effort to finish them all.

All these including four drinks for three pax was less than RM50.

One more thing, I recently found out that the price at CityOne branch is higher even though they are serving the same thing.

Nando’s @ VivaCity

Posted on March 6, 2016March 6, 2016 By sweet surrender No Comments on Nando’s @ VivaCity

So… I was invited to Nando’s soft opening but I couldn’t make it, didn’t get the chance to try all those food there. Oh well… Will just have to spend my own money to eat there hahaha… This happened 2 months back! Really lag in updating.

Yes! Nando’s is finally here in Kuching! Lots of people rejoiced! Located in VivaCity. Let’s see… I’ve tried Nando’s in Australia, Singapore, UK, and Malaysia. They are slightly different in the way they prepare their chicken and the type of chicken they used. However, taste is still the same.

I’m glad that Nando’s in Kuching does maintain the quality but we’ll see how long it will last with the supposed quality.

Tony Roma’s

Posted on February 29, 2016February 29, 2016 By sweet surrender No Comments on Tony Roma’s

Another long-awaited franchise is now available in Kuching, Tony Roma’s. Located in VivaCity. It’s my first time dining in Tony Roma’s. Never dine in other branches before.

Price is rather high but you don’t have to spend so much by ordering too much, the trick is to share to split the cost. Portion is big for the salad and mains. If you’re small or average eater, order a salad and a main or a main to share should be good enough. As for drinks, just order water (RM0.90/glass).

Left: Bread is FOC. As long that you dine there, you get this (I think…). The bread was soft. Make sure you spread the herb butter that came with it while it’s still warm to get the best out of it.

Right: TR’s Chocolate Avalanche (RM15.79), molten chocolate cake overflowing with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge and Oreo crumbles. Too sweet for me. It’s not molten chocolate cake at all… No chocolate oozing out… More like chocolate brownie.

Fillet Medallion and Bountiful Beef Ribs (RM88.93). The fillet medallion was awesome! We ordered it medium well. Yum! The rib was ok but not great likely due to some errors in their preparations.

By the way, they have their Tony Roma’s special sauces to go with your meat. There are Carolina Honeys, Blue Ridge Smokies, Red Hots, and Original BBQ Sauce. I like Red Hots and Carolina Honeys.

All priced quoted are inclusive of GST. You’ll be charged 10% service charge as well.

This meal I had was not long after its opening, another belated post :p I was supposed to go for the food tasting but sadly due to work commitment, I had to pass.

Overall, I would rate it above average due to the dessert we had and the rib were not really up to expectations. Hopefully they have improved now.

Sushi Zanmai at VivaCity

Posted on February 25, 2016February 26, 2016 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Sushi Zanmai at VivaCity

At last! Sushi Zanmai is here in Kuching in VivaCity.

Have been hearing so much about it from friends in West Malaysia with good feedback. I’m glad to say that it’s really good comparing to the other two sushi establishments in Kuching.

I’ve been there 4 times. First three times were good, the fourth time was a bit disappointing because the sushi wasn’t properly made, the rice crumbled, couldn’t hold it with chopsticks at all. I hope the next time if I do go over again, it won’t be like this again. Nevertheless, the ingredients used are still much better than the other competitors, tasted great too.

Left: Unagi Kabayaki (Small, RM24.80).
Right: My favourite, Salmon Zanmai (RM29.80) consists of salmon, salmon belly, broiled salmon, smoked salmon, and salmon roll.

Left: Not sure what this is called, the thing on top are scallop. This is from the conveyor belt and cost RM7.80, the most expensive plate on the belt.
Right: Spicy Niku Ramen (RM15.80 for chicken, RM18.80 for beef).

Left: Chicken Gyoza (RM14.80).
Right: Midori Salmon Roll (RM18.80).

Last but not least, Spicy Spider Roll. I forgot to take note of the price. We’re expecting this to be sprinkled with chili flakes but no… It doesn’t look spicy at all! Apparently, the spiciness is from the mayonnaise. The top was garnished with deep fried crab stick strips.

Conclusion, I don’t feel like going to other sushi franchise anymore. This will be my first choice. The prices are reasonable too.

Madeleine Cafe & Patisserie

Posted on February 19, 2016March 6, 2016 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Madeleine Cafe & Patisserie

Oh dear… Another post that happened months ago!

Madeleine Cafe & Patisserie, located at Ground Floor of tHe Spring, is the latest addition in the shopping mall. Just opposite Watsons or next to Sushi King. Very classy place with French-inspired interior design.

As you can see… Christmas tree! Go figure how long these photos were taken 😛 They have an open concept kitchen. Quite fun standing there seeing them churning out batches and batches of meticulously made pastries.

Very obvious that these are not made in bulk and being cut into pieces to served but they are handmade one by one, hence no one piece is the same. The prices are high but I won’t complain because of the quality. It’s very simple, people don’t mind paying high price for good quality product. The place is always packed even though it’s expensive.

Here’s what I had… Went there 3 times, at least once a month *LOL* You’ll see how pricey and how fine the workmanship is for each pastry.

Symphony (RM16.90) and Mango & Passion Cake (RM13.90).

Symphony has 7 layers. See how meticulous it is! Each layer, has to be laid carefully. You definitely cannot do it in bulk, it has to be done one by one. Not too sweet, love the taste, a harmony of all 7 seven tastes and textures. Main ingredient is chocolate. It’s so finely crafted that you feel so satisfied and forgotten how expensive it is.

Mango & Passion Cake was another surprise. Thinking it’s just a dome, a layer of white chocolate, and a crust down there but it proved me wrong. You can see from the photo. In the dome itself has already so much going on. At the bottom after the piece of white chocolate, there’s cream filled in the crust. All the flavours are quite balance and not on the sweet side.

Next, here’s a pot of lemon ginger tea with Raspberry Ivory Cake(No idea of the price but it’s should be between RM13 to RM15) and Apricot Danish(RM4.90). Madeleine (traditional small cake from Commercy and Liverdun, two communes of the Lorraine region in northeastern France – Wikipedia) is being served with the tea.

Raspberry Ivory Cake, not as sophisticated as Symphony but still WOW! Looks very sweet but not really. Trust me, when I said it’s not too sweet, it’s really not too sweet, I can’t stand eating sweet food. Look at the layers! Again, you have to do it individually. Even the cake is nicely decorated, so pretty and it took us quite awhile to cut it up because it’s too pretty to be eaten!

These are from the latest visit.

Left: Lemon Tart(RM13.90). Very lemony! WOW! Very refreshing. Don’t leave it on your spoon for too long as you will be get metallic taste from the lemon chemical reaction to metal. Just insert into your mouth immediately. Better still, eat it with your hand.

Right: Strawberry shortcake (RM12.90). Real strawberry in the layers. Very well-balance taste. Again, not very sweet. Just nice.

Overall, it’s a good place for hang out with great desserts. Good thing is that water is available free of charge. I do recommend this place.
