Sushi Zanmai at VivaCity

Posted on February 25, 2016February 26, 2016 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Sushi Zanmai at VivaCity

At last! Sushi Zanmai is here in Kuching in VivaCity.

Have been hearing so much about it from friends in West Malaysia with good feedback. I’m glad to say that it’s really good comparing to the other two sushi establishments in Kuching.

I’ve been there 4 times. First three times were good, the fourth time was a bit disappointing because the sushi wasn’t properly made, the rice crumbled, couldn’t hold it with chopsticks at all. I hope the next time if I do go over again, it won’t be like this again. Nevertheless, the ingredients used are still much better than the other competitors, tasted great too.

Left: Unagi Kabayaki (Small, RM24.80).
Right: My favourite, Salmon Zanmai (RM29.80) consists of salmon, salmon belly, broiled salmon, smoked salmon, and salmon roll.

Left: Not sure what this is called, the thing on top are scallop. This is from the conveyor belt and cost RM7.80, the most expensive plate on the belt.
Right: Spicy Niku Ramen (RM15.80 for chicken, RM18.80 for beef).

Left: Chicken Gyoza (RM14.80).
Right: Midori Salmon Roll (RM18.80).

Last but not least, Spicy Spider Roll. I forgot to take note of the price. We’re expecting this to be sprinkled with chili flakes but no… It doesn’t look spicy at all! Apparently, the spiciness is from the mayonnaise. The top was garnished with deep fried crab stick strips.

Conclusion, I don’t feel like going to other sushi franchise anymore. This will be my first choice. The prices are reasonable too.

Madeleine Cafe & Patisserie

Posted on February 19, 2016March 6, 2016 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Madeleine Cafe & Patisserie

Oh dear… Another post that happened months ago!

Madeleine Cafe & Patisserie, located at Ground Floor of tHe Spring, is the latest addition in the shopping mall. Just opposite Watsons or next to Sushi King. Very classy place with French-inspired interior design.

As you can see… Christmas tree! Go figure how long these photos were taken 😛 They have an open concept kitchen. Quite fun standing there seeing them churning out batches and batches of meticulously made pastries.

Very obvious that these are not made in bulk and being cut into pieces to served but they are handmade one by one, hence no one piece is the same. The prices are high but I won’t complain because of the quality. It’s very simple, people don’t mind paying high price for good quality product. The place is always packed even though it’s expensive.

Here’s what I had… Went there 3 times, at least once a month *LOL* You’ll see how pricey and how fine the workmanship is for each pastry.

Symphony (RM16.90) and Mango & Passion Cake (RM13.90).

Symphony has 7 layers. See how meticulous it is! Each layer, has to be laid carefully. You definitely cannot do it in bulk, it has to be done one by one. Not too sweet, love the taste, a harmony of all 7 seven tastes and textures. Main ingredient is chocolate. It’s so finely crafted that you feel so satisfied and forgotten how expensive it is.

Mango & Passion Cake was another surprise. Thinking it’s just a dome, a layer of white chocolate, and a crust down there but it proved me wrong. You can see from the photo. In the dome itself has already so much going on. At the bottom after the piece of white chocolate, there’s cream filled in the crust. All the flavours are quite balance and not on the sweet side.

Next, here’s a pot of lemon ginger tea with Raspberry Ivory Cake(No idea of the price but it’s should be between RM13 to RM15) and Apricot Danish(RM4.90). Madeleine (traditional small cake from Commercy and Liverdun, two communes of the Lorraine region in northeastern France – Wikipedia) is being served with the tea.

Raspberry Ivory Cake, not as sophisticated as Symphony but still WOW! Looks very sweet but not really. Trust me, when I said it’s not too sweet, it’s really not too sweet, I can’t stand eating sweet food. Look at the layers! Again, you have to do it individually. Even the cake is nicely decorated, so pretty and it took us quite awhile to cut it up because it’s too pretty to be eaten!

These are from the latest visit.

Left: Lemon Tart(RM13.90). Very lemony! WOW! Very refreshing. Don’t leave it on your spoon for too long as you will be get metallic taste from the lemon chemical reaction to metal. Just insert into your mouth immediately. Better still, eat it with your hand.

Right: Strawberry shortcake (RM12.90). Real strawberry in the layers. Very well-balance taste. Again, not very sweet. Just nice.

Overall, it’s a good place for hang out with great desserts. Good thing is that water is available free of charge. I do recommend this place.

The Kimbap

The Kimbap, another eatery I went in 2015. Oh yes… I’m really really lag!

One of the latest Korean food establishments in Kuching located at Sublot16, Lot7691, Ground floor, Brighton Square, Jalan Song, 93350 Kuching.

The menu is quite basic. Very simple Korean food. Price wise is reasonable as well.

Left: Topokki 떡볶이 (RM9), very chewy, the sauce was not bad, not as spicy as expected. Very simple and basic, nothing fancy. Tasted good. I think the last time I had it was in Busan. It’s also my first dinner in Busan.

Right: 4 Seasons Assorted Kimbap 김밥 (RM10.50), also very simple food. It feels like home eating the food here, reminded me of the food I had at my host family in Busan.

If you are looking for simple Korean food, this is the place to go. The price is cheaper as well.

Swee Kang Jalan Haji Taha

Posted on January 15, 2016 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Swee Kang Jalan Haji Taha

You know how silly I was… Been years… People kept saying “go Swee Kang for ABC”, “Swee Kang for sotong kangkung” and etc., yet I have no idea where it’s located until recently 😛 The funny thing is that I’ve been eating their food for decades! Never know the shop’s or stall’s name hahaha… One fine day, went there for lunch with colleague and get the chance to snap photos of the food there after so many years!!!

Swee Kang is located at 176, Jalan Haji Taha, Kampung Bandarshah, 93400 Kuching. They are serving an array of local favourites. We ordered from almost all of the stalls. I don’t remember any of the pricing though.

Left: Ais Kacang, one of the must-have there. It’s too sweet for me. When my parents ordered this, they’ll request the sweetness to be reduced to half.

Right: Sotong kangkung is cuttlefish with water spinach mixed with prawn paste sprinkled with chopped nuts. If you prefer it spicy, then mix it with chili.

Left: Jelly fish umai, very generous potion. They’re not stingy with the portion, lots of vegetables too.

Right: Need to introduce more? I’m sure you know what’s this. Rojak, fruit and vegetable salad dish which is commonly found in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Left: Cha kueh, radish cake fried with egg and preserved turnip.

Right: Assorted deep fried food normally made up of taufu, fish balls, prawn fritters, and etc. to be eaten with chili sauce.

The place is always packed, business is really good. It’s my first time dining here, normally we bought them home.

Finally a post almost 10 days. Enjoy your weekend!

Sukha

Posted on January 6, 2016January 6, 2016 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Sukha

Sukha, many had been there, me too. Been hearing a lot of good reviews about it, was lucky to have the chance to try. Went there way back in November 2015. Hehehe… Many posts in queue.

Located at Brighton Square (Ground Floor, Lot 11963, Block 16, Brighton Square, Jalan Song, 93350 Kuching). They serve a fusion of western and local food. When I went there, it was packed! Business was so good. Not sure about now though, should be still good. They seemed to be famous for their Churos and Waffle Chicken but too bad I’m not a fan of the former.

Left: Nasi Lemak, one of their signature. Priced at RM12, isn’t not your normal nasi lemak price for sure. Sambak was extremely spicy but in a good way. Chicken was tender and juicy.

Right: Chicken Waffle (RM18), savoury dish, interesting combination. Portion was huge, great for sharing. The waffle is buttermilk waffle if not mistaken and it’s drizzled with some maple syrup. Tasted great. There’s no bone in the meat so no worries to eat it like a sandwich.

Overall, the environment is nice, food was good but with higher price tag. Well… Dining in this kind of place, what do you expect? Will I go back again? Yes, of course to try other food. Food price range from RM10-18
