It’s Snowing Cotton in Kuching

Posted on June 10, 2014June 10, 2014 By sweet surrender No Comments on It’s Snowing Cotton in Kuching

It’s been a long time I didn’t upload any video. This is the latest video I took. Was there at the right time. Amazing!

The cotton tree is very old, almost 100 years, located at Padang Merdeka. The cotton is growing now, getting more and more. I did post about it before but only photos, now sharing the video with you. When there’s wind, it’s like Kuching is snowing. Everywhere is covered by cotton.

Here’s the video when the wind came…

I heard it only happened about every 5-10 years, not a yearly thing. I’m so lucky! Been living in Kuching for more than 3 decades yet this is the first time I see this with my own eyes and touching the cotton!

Enjoy!

Langkawi (11 – 14 May 2014) – Part 1

Posted on June 6, 2014June 4, 2014 By sweet surrender 3 Comments on Langkawi (11 – 14 May 2014) – Part 1

Last month, went to Langkawi for a short getaway. Exactly 3 months after I started work. Seriously needed a break and this came at the right time. Flight ticket for return trip was so cheap! Less than RM150 from Air Asia, no check-in luggage. Direct Kuching to Langkawi. Very worth it!

It’s my first trip with this group of friends, we only got to know each other on this trip. Out of 5, I only know 2 of them. All 6 of us on this trip, 3 girls, 3 guys.

We rented a car. You seriously need a car to move around Langkawi or you will have to hire someone to drive to go everywhere. It’s not that hard to drive there, the island is small too.

Views on the way to our motel at Kuah.

Arrived our accommodation but was shocked at first as there’s temple there. Were we in the right place? Is this a staying place or is this a temple? It’s correct. Not wrong. This motel is actually housed in the Hock Kien Kong Huay building. The temple is part of the Hokkien association.

Also, do not expect you’ll be greeted by a receptionist. You had to call the number displayed on the card on the table found there to get someone to come out to process your check-in.

View from our corridor.

The girls got Family Room that could fit 4 while the guys for Triple room. Lucky us hehehe… The 3 big guys had to squeeze in a small room while we 3 tiny girls in a big room ;p For all 6 of us, we split the room rental and each only paid RM100 or RM110 (don’t quite remember) for 3 days without breakfast! So cheap!!

They have water dispenser at the staircase if you need water. This is good enough. Must drink plenty of water while traveling what’s more Langkawi was extremely hot last month!

The shower and toilet are in one, very spacious. Towels are provided. Generally the place is clean enough for the price you’re paying.

After check-in, we went to hunt for lunch.

We went to Langkawi Parade which is not too far from our staying place to hunt for lunch while surveying the prices of the items.

Had beef burger at MC Corner. This is only RM3.80! Super duper filling! The size was bigger than expected. Not a very bad deal. Taste was ok too.

The view of the sea from the carpark. Isn’t it pretty?

Part 2 will come soon *finger crossed*

Coach is Finally in Kuching

Posted on June 1, 2014February 28, 2022 By sweet surrender 5 Comments on Coach is Finally in Kuching

First of all, Happy Gawai and happy holiday! Long weekend… YAY!

So I missed out the trip to Ba’kelalan but it’s not all that bad as I could attend Coach opening at tHe Spring.

Finally Coach is in tHe Spring. 1st June, Coach opening was officiated by the Vice President and General Manager of South East Asia, Andrew Stanleick. The bald guy, he reminded me of an actor. Pretty good looking. 😉 Have photo taken with him but it’s not in my camera.

While waiting, we had some fun at the photo booth.

Left: Not forgetting the wall.

Right: So… Which one?

The invited guests in the outlet. I was eying for some of the bags I found back in Bicester Village last year but couldn’t not locate any. I guess it’s no longer in season or because this outlet only carries the latest collection? Hmm…

Saw some sunglasses and tried them on. Hmm… Which one? I like the aviator but seems like this aviator doesn’t suit my face.

The part I look forward to the most was the door gift!!

Coach Legacy North/South Universal Case in Leather.

TADA!! Goodness! I’ve been looking for a bag for my phone as mine had worn out long ago. Didn’t find any that fancied me and the size that could fit my phone. This came in time! I’m a very happy girl today! Thanks Coach! The colour is awesome too! Love it!

Might as well write a review on it now. The strap is what I’ve been looking for while there’s a slot at the back of it. The exterior design is very simple and plain, just what I like.

Inside, the slots are great for cards and money! No longer need to bring a big bag out. Will be handy during my work too as my jacket got no pocket. I can slot in my business cards and also my phone and I’m ready to go. Great for running errands too! I’m over the moon! What’s more? Fit my phone nicely as my phone size is a bit odd, not easy to find a bag for it.

However, one down side, the zip opening is limited. If it can go all the way down it would be perfect! A bit hard to take my phone out from it.

Happy! This is the exact colour that I would buy if I’m buying for my phone.

I guess we’ll be seeing more Coach users in town soon? Will I get one? Not for now, this one from the door gift is enough for me for now.

Gawai with a Difference

Posted on May 30, 2014 By sweet surrender No Comments on Gawai with a Difference

Gawai is around the corner. It’s gonna be a long weekend for Sarawak starting 1st June. Sabah too as they are celebrating their Hari Kaamatan on 31st May. These two states situated in the Borneo Island are very different from West Malaysia. Not many people know about us even the Malaysians themselves.

I’m half Bidayuh. Gawai to me is no stranger. When I was young, my parents would go back to my mother’s kampung for celebrations. We never stayed overnight though. Basically the day would be spent visiting. Since my mother’s kampung is under Seventh Day Adventist, they don’t eat pork and they don’t make tuak. This is what makes it different from the non-SDA’s kampung. There’s a series of events during that period of time as part of the Gawai celebrations. I remember my mother ever asked me whether I’m interested in joining the kumang gawai contest ;p

Talking about Gawai, I’ll be experience Gawai the Lun Bawang way. Means I’m flying off this Saturday to celebrate Gawai at Ba’kelalan with the other media people. It will be my first time experiencing a very different celebration far away from Kuching. This is gonna be interesting.

Meanwhile, do check out Kaamatan&Gawai 2014 by Petronas. You will learn a lot especially about the Iban and Dusun community. I learnt a lot from these videos as those are the things I’ve never experience partly because my mother’s kampung is a more modern one and because they are under SDA. Also, Bidayuh doesn’t live in longhouse. Frankly, I don’t think I can survive in the environment shown in the video hehehe…

Do stay tuned to my coming Gawai post 😉

Update: This post was composed few days ago, my latest status is that I will be in Kuching for Gawai, no more trip to Ba’kelalan due to flight change and work commitment stopped me from going 🙁 Anyway, at least I get to attend an event on 1st of June which I was actually looking forward to and was torn between these two offers. At least I don’t have to make any decision now, the answer is already there, no decision to make anymore.

Cotton Tree in Kuching

Posted on May 22, 2014May 25, 2014 By sweet surrender 3 Comments on Cotton Tree in Kuching

The famous cotton tree in Kuching. One of the oldest trees in the middle of the city, located at Padang Merdeka.

I’ve been hearing about it but never get the chance to see it with my own eyes even though I’ve been staying here all my life! Last month, I’ve been seeing cotton flying around at the area and found out that the season was here!

of course, won’t miss this chance to take photos of it. Was told that it’s not every year you can see such thing.

Hopefully all these trees in the city will stay where it is and not being chopped down in the name of development. Our lush green city is now losing its green. Sad…
