Road Trip to Betong – Part 1

Posted on February 23, 2010August 26, 2010 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Road Trip to Betong – Part 1

Went to Betong to visit my brother’s national service camp few weeks back. It’s my first time having a long distant road trip with my parents. The furthest we had traveled by car was to Sematan. We had never gone beyond that distant. The road trip to Betong took us about 4-5 hours as we made few stops along the way.

Journey started at 6am on 24th January 2010. First stop was KFC at Sarawak Plaza as my brother wanted KFC. First time bought KFC so early in the morning.

We made a stop at Serian to go to the toilet before continuing our journey. Basically I’ll just show you the scenerythat greeted us along the way.

We stopped at Lachau for another toilet break. This is a popular place for travelers to stop for toilet break , eat something or buy some jungle produce.

It’s a very small town with only few rows of shops.

This is the market.

After 45 minutes there for toilet break, simple breakfast, and walked around the place, we continued our journey to Betong. I really love the mountain view. It’s magnificent. The photos just can’t tell you how magnificent it was. You really have to see it with your own eyes. It’s like a huge and long stretch of green wall. Do refer to the first photo in this post, it’s just part of the mountain.

Left: Another part of the same mountain.

Right: The paddy field along the way.

Left: The mountain again.

I wonder how long this mountain will be here to stay. Imagine that the mountain is gone in years to come, maybe not so soon but eventually it will be gone one day. It’s possible! It’s going to be a really sad case. If not mistaken, this is the mountain that separates Indonesia and Sarawak.

Right: Turn right to Betong. Straight up, it’s Sri Aman, this is where you can find the famous Tidal Bore of Sarawak.

That’s all for now. Will continue again tomorrow.

Bye Bye KL 8th January 2010

Posted on February 22, 2010August 26, 2010 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Bye Bye KL 8th January 2010

8th January was our last day in KL. It was raining so heavily that morning luckily it stopped around 10am.

We headed to Sungei Wang and I bought 2 more dresses while waiting for the phone accessories shop to open as we bought a faulty battery there and went there to get a change. However, we just found out few days ago from my brother that the battery wasn’t faulty at all. It’s just that the capacity of the battery is so much lower than the original phone battery. *LOL*

I didn’t buy any clothes at the shop you see in the photo. The other one is a shop specialized in sex related products(obviously ;p). The phone accessories shop was located just next to it. The shop selling clothes was opposite it.

After Sungei Wang, we went to Low Yat and then Time Square. We got lost trying to locate the exit of Sungei Wang! Told you so… When you don’t need the exit, you kept seeing it, when you need it, it’s no where to be seen! We tried to located Time Square but failed. After asking so many people, finally we found it. Everyone told us we could reach Time Square from one of the exits of Sungei Wang but we couldn’t find it *LOL*

We finally got to the back door and I realized that Low Yat was just outside! ARG! Then Time Square was just opposite. We wasted so much time getting lost as usual. Went into Low Yat for a brief visit just to show my parents the place where people getting their gadgets in KL.

Our main aim was to go to Time Square as I wanted to get Krispy Kreme ;p I got it!

Bought 1 dozens, it cost RM23.90. 12 different donuts even though there’re two that looked similar. They actually tasted different.

I don’t remember what I bought. My conclusion, Krispy Kreme is too sweet for my liking. I’m referring to the fillings and toppings. Extremely sweet! Each of the donut was practically coated with a layer of sugar. Imagine the sweetness from that sugar coating along with the toppings and fillings. I really couldn’t stand it. I prefer JCo or Big Apple.

Thought of settling our lunch at Time Square but was too lazy and tired to locate more eateries there so decided to go try out the pan mee shop near 41Berangan since we passed by the place everyday and the place was always packed to the brim. We figured it must be one of the places for good food. It’s just few houses away.

This is the famous pan mee shop located at Jalan Berangan. The place was so packed! We had to wait to for empty table. Lucky for us, there’s a table available, we were basically sharing tables with other people.

Was quite lost in what to order. Luckily they had set lunch promotion and we went for it. It made the ordering so much easier, there’s a list there on the table. The set came with the pan mee + fish ball + meat ball + drink + a pack of facial tissue. Small set was RM7.50 and big set was RM8. There were 16 types of pan mee dishes for you to choose!

Left: You can choose to have herbal tea(the brownish yellowish one) or cincau(black one) for the drink either hot or cold.

Right: Flat soup. The pan mee was served in soup along with dried anchovies, mushrooms, sweet leaf, meat balls, and fish balls.

Left: Flat dry.

Right: Thin dry.

The dry ones were served in thick black soya sauce.

Overall, the texture of the noodle was not bad. Pretty “Q”. Actually, It’s my first time having pan mee so I can’t really comment. However, we noticed that the taste of the flat dry and thin dry was different. I don’t know how to describe but the sauce tasted different. We thought it was the same. The flat one was on the sweeter note and the thin one was saltier.

If I’m not mistaken, they had been operation for 10 years or so. Used to be a stall and now they’re operating in a shop/house. You can see the photos, the histories, and newspapers articles on the wall.

After our lunch, we headed back to make final adjustment to our luggage. One was seriously overweight and we adjusted it for quite a while.

Our flight was at almost 8pm but we went to the airport at 3pm *LOL* Very early right? Was afraid of the jam and it was a Friday too. The taxi driver was quite surprised that we went to the airport so early. He told us that we didn’t have to as there’s new road which could reach LCCT faster, in about an hour! Aiks… Didn’t expect that ;p I forgot that we’re using taxi as the last time I went, I went to the airport tru’ KL Sentral by taking SkyBus. That’s why we had to check out earlier hahaha… The fare for taxi ride from 41Berangan to LCCT was RM90.

We reached the airport at almost 4pm, we got nothing to do, so we loitered around and then sat there took turn to take a nap. Was so tired. Then my dad decided to walk around again and came back with Marrybrown kiddy meal. Hahaha… We shared the kiddy meal and waited for dinner time. When dinner time came, we ended up at Marrybrown again ;p

Check-in was a bit of chaos because of some travelers tried to check-in with overweight luggage, the charge for overweight luggage was RM10/kilo! Expensive! They kept adjusting the stuffs in the bags and the queue was not moving -.-” What a waste of time.

Anyway, finally got ourselves check-in and waited for our ride home. The rain was extremely heavy and the plane reached slightly later than expected but we still reached Kuching on time. I’m lucky. Till now I never got my flight delayed with Air Asia. Not a single time.

That’s the end of my KL trip. Not sure will I be there again this year as we are planning for another one somewhere this year for my brother because he missed it due to national service. However, with my timetable this year… It’s hard to arrange one. We’ll see…

Pavilion & One Utama 7th January 2010

Posted on February 9, 2010February 22, 2010 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Pavilion & One Utama 7th January 2010

First stop in the morning was Pavilion.

It’s not very far from where we stayed. We just walked there. Spent quite a bit of time there as my parents were interested in the decorations selling there but they were too expensive to buy and no way to bring them back ;p We spent quite a lot of time at the food court too.

We decided to try Mr. Baoz! I knew about this place somewhere from the Internet more than a year ago(if not mistaken). Finally saw it here in Pavilion. Of course, we decided to try it out. There was promotion that time and we bought the promo set, 4 baby Mr. Baoz for RM1.70/each. Original price was RM1.80/each.

It’s really mini and cute! In fact it’s just your normal bao except it’s fancier and with lots of choices rather than the usually char siew or red bean. Frankly I don’t like bao but the bao from Mr. Baoz were just too cute to resist ;p

We had BBQ Chicken(from Royal Delicacy series), Winter Romance(from Chocolate Serise), Chicken Sate Baoz(from Royal Delicacy series), and Snowflake Taro Baoz(from snowflake series). I don’t quite remember what we had actually. I took the brochure so that I could refer when I do my post. Now… I notice that the actual Baoz doesn’t look the same as the Baoz in the brochure that’s why I can’t identify them *LOL*

How’s the taste? Hmmm… Well… Not so bad, something different but acceptable especially to my parents who prefer food that they are familiar with.

You can actually opt for the Baoz that is fried but we opt for the steamed ones. Why Mr. Baoz? I got these from the brochure:
– natural colouring
– less oil in the fillings
– can keep in freezer for 3 days and reheat with steamer/microwave
– texture is soft and healthy
– “double” filling, one on top, one in the bun
– presentable and nice packaging

After having Baoz, we ordered a bowl of Braised Beef Noodle(RM10.90) at Little Taiwan, one of the stalls there, to share. The taste was quite disappointing.

After that, we headed back to 41Berangan before heading to One Utama. In fact I was torn between One Utama and Mid Valley. At the end I decided to go to One Utama coz I thought I could get my CNY clothes there since I’ve been getting them there every time I’m in KL. Our taxi was to pick us up from 41Berangan using meter to One Utama, the fare was RM30.

In the end I regretted it coz I didn’t get anything there and we wasted most of our time getting lost inside the shopping mall hahaha… Should just go to Mid Valley, there’s more thing to see at Mid Valley or might just go to The Curve or IKEA.

There’s Old Chang Kee here. It’s a franchise from Singapore. Bought the curry puff to eat.

Photos taken from the One Utama. We ended up here when we tried to locate TGI Friday *LOL*

We tried to look for TGI Friday and got lost so many times, round and round, kept returning to the same place. We saw it from afar but couldn’t find our way to it. Silly, silly! We were all these while so near to it but never noticed it! -.-” Wasted so much time just looking for it.

Finally I got to dine here after so many years! We only ordered a set, it’s quite big in portion for us. Thought of ordering another but was full already. I definitely couldn’t finish it alone. Just having half the meat could make me full don’t even say the whole plate of food.

Left: Texas Ribeye and Cajun Fried Shrimp(RM54.90), generous 10 oz. Australian chilled air flown grain-fed ribeye topped with a fresh spicy tomato pico de gallo paired with crispy Cajun fried shrimp served with BBQ sauce, Cheedar mashed potatoes and grilled corn on the cob.

Initially I ordered medium rare but later asked them to change to 70% cooked as it was too bloody and my parents couldn’t accept it. I didn’t expect them to ask me to check when they serve it to us. Upon seeing my parents reactions, they offered to change a new one for us. They didn’t just took the meat and recook it instead it’s a whole new piece of meat. That’s good! I like that!

Seeing this now make me craving for it again -.-”

Right: Green Apple Slush(RM8.90), mixture of green apple and lemon-lime soda. Very huge glass, lucky we only ordered one.

After that, we called it a day and got a taxi back using meter for only RM25. It’s a good thing this taxi driver actually know his way once he saw the address unlike the one that we got at KL Sentral.

That’s all for the second day, spending most of the time getting lost ;p

Got Lost & KLCC 6th January 2010

Posted on February 1, 2010February 2, 2010 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Got Lost & KLCC 6th January 2010

Continue on with my KL trip post. Many other posts are still pending because I haven’t filter the images.

All right… So we got lost… We turned left, left, left instead of right. My bad… Told ya… I’m bad with direction especially with the map! I mixed up the instructions given too. After turning and turning the same place for at least 4 times, basically we’re seeing KL Tower every single time ;p Finally someone came to us while we were trying to figure out the map and saved us! Silly, silly! Bukit Bintang was all these while right in front of me but I missed it. I couldn’t see Lot10’s signboard, if I saw it, I would know. The signboard was covered by the monorail and trees at certain angle, that’s why -.-” I felt so bad ok… Leading my parents to the wrong place and made them walked so much. It was a very hot afternoon summore!

On the bright side, I managed to take photos of the tower ;p Never got the chance to take one whenever I’m in KL. Also explored the area that I’ve never been to.

We actually tried to hail a taxi near Hotel Istana and that taxi man tried to slaughter us by telling us going to KLCC cost RM16! Luckily we were told it should not exceed RM10 if we were to go to KLCC by taxi.

Left: Another view that we saw when we got lost.

Right: WHAT THE F***! When I saw this sign, I felt so want to kick myself. Next to it, there’s Ain Arabia. Saw Ain Arabia in the map but didn’t expect it’s actually so close! This is actually the road leading straight to 41Berangan! Just go in straight, down the hill and there it was!

Left: Finally found the taxi stand. Asked one taxi, he told us RM10. We just took it. At least still in the range.

Right: Initial plan was go to KLCC Aquaria but got turned off by the price and also got quite tired walking around because if we were to go in there, we have to walk again! -.-” This is the road leading to KLCC Aquaria.

So we just went to the souvenir shop to see see look look.

Finally got the chance to take picture of Petronas Twin Tower.

Left: We didn’t know we had walked such long distant as we’ve been walking inside the building. This architecture greeted us when we came out from the building and got a shock seeing that the twin tower was so far away already. Ok… For Kuchingite standard, it’s far ;p

Right: We slowly walked back to the twin tower. This is the fountain you can find there at KLCC.

After that, we tried to locate the LRT at KLCC to go back to Bukit Bintang. I thought the station will link to each other under one roof, we didn’t have to walk out of the building but we were so wrong. We had to walked out of the building when we reached Dang Wangi station. Then walked to the opposite side of the road via overhead bridge to another station, Bukit Nanas, to go to Bukit Bintang. It’s quite a distant to walk to the Bukit Nanas station, again… For our standard ;p

All in all, 3 of us, we spent RM7.50 to go back to Bukit Bintang from KLCC. We concluded, it’s not worth it! ;p Rather use taxi coz taking LRT and monorail was taking up too much energy. From then on, we decided no more monorail or LRT. Taxi all the way next time!

Our last stop was Sungei Wang. Had dinner at the food court as we couldn’t decide on what to eat and was too tired to hunt. I’m sorry to say, our food court in Kuching is way better than that. After dinner, we walked around Sungei Wang before we called it a night.

Who knows… We lost our direction again! Ask the police stationed there and he got no idea where was Jalan Berangan haha… Then I saw McD right in front of me as that row of shops led to Ain Arabia, there’s also EON Bank and Watsons there. We finally found our way “home”.

Burger King KL Sentral & 41 Berangan 6th January 2010

Posted on January 26, 2010January 27, 2010 By sweet surrender 8 Comments on Burger King KL Sentral & 41 Berangan 6th January 2010

Once we reached KL Sentral, we had lunch there. At first, wanted to go for Burger King but my dad was a bit turn off by the price even though he was thinking to have it as the last time he had it was in Singapore. So we went to McD but the crowd was crazy! At the end, we went back to Burger King and ordered all the cheap and yummy stuffs ;p

We ordered 3 types of burgers. If I’m not mistaken, we had Whopper Jr.(this is the set, RM11.49), Rodeo Cheeseburger(RM4.95), and BK-something(RM4.95) ;p I like the fries!

After our lunch, we looked for a taxi. One taxi driver tried to charge us RM26 to 41 Berangan! WTF! Luckily I’m given the guidelines by people from 41 Berangan that it will cost about RM12+ for taxi from KL Sentral. Found one that charged RM16, oh well… We went for it.

Left: 41 Berangan, I found them online when I did a search. If not mistaken, I found them tru’ one of the pages of Air Asia and then did a search on them via search engine.

Right: One of the rooms that was outside, it’s actually a container but this is not the room we’re staying. We stayed at the upper floor.

The dining area and you could also watch DVD here. Not only that, you’re allowed to take the DVDs to the room to watch. The rate was inclusive of breakfast. The breakfast was basically coffee, tea, milk, bread, butter, and jam.

I highly recommend this place. It’s better to stay here rather than staying at 3-star hotels. The place was clean, the people there was friendly and helpful, there was free Internet(luckily for that as we were required to settle some work stuffs that was quite urgent and I didn’t bring my laptop), the sheet, the bed, the pillow were really surprisingly comfortable.

The view you see here is the second floor view that greeted us every time we opened the door ;p I forgot to take photo of our room’s door hahaha…

Since we were supposed to go in 4, I was hunting around for a place that could accommodate 4 in a room with attached bathroom but mostly I found were 3 in a room. Finally found 41 Berangan that’s located at Jalan Berangan. After looking at the location and the photos in the website. I took the risk, trust my guts and made a reservation somewhere in July 2009 to secure the room as there’s only one such kind of room available. We paid RM200/night for deluxe room. It’s not expensive, if you go in 4, one person only RM50. You’ll get 2 queen beds.

The best part for me was the bed, you know why? I always have difficulty sleeping in hotels especially on the first night because of the bed, the sheet, the pillows. What to do? Cannot afford hotel with more stars *LOL*

Here, I got no problem sleeping at all. The sleeping experience was similar to Glenmarie Holiday Inn that I stayed last time except for the air-con. Hotel’s air-con is damn cold as it’s centralized but here you get to control it yourself. They’re using the good quality sheet. Love that!

For our room, it was really spacious, ceiling was high, there were TV, DVD player, kettle, air-con, coffee, tea, creamer, sugar, mugs, attached bathroom and toilet, and towels were provided. The bathroom and toilet wasn’t in one space, its separated, so it’s good, you will not need to wait for your turn to do “stuffs”.

Left: The veranda. If you smoke, you can smoke here but not in the room. Smoking is strictly prohibited inside.

Right: The view from the veranda. To the left there’s a junction, to the right you’ll head to Bukit Bintang, it’s so near! Just walk to the right, walk, walk, walk, you’ll see Hotel Fortuna on your right, then reach the junction, turn right. You will see the monorail station, Lot 10, Sungei Wang and more! That will be Bukit Bintang!

However, we got lost, we went to the wrong direction, we went left, left, left… That… I’ll tell you more in the next post.

Just one down side of this place, the road was quite quiet at night. So if you are walking alone, it’s quite scary. If you’re there with more people then at least won’t be that bad. I’ll come back to stay again if I go to KL again provided I’m not traveling alone hahaha…

That’s all for now 😉
