Go.Fun.Kee @ Ban Hock Road

Posted on June 4, 2008June 4, 2008 By sweet surrender 4 Comments on Go.Fun.Kee @ Ban Hock Road

Had pretty late dinner on 1st June. Couldn’t think of where to eat, my dad just drove around to look for a place to eat. Passed by many eateries ended up at Go.Fun.Kee at Ban Hock Road. It’s opened not long ago. We were there at arounf 8.30pm, their business hour is till 9.30pm.

In case you want to know more details, it’s located next to Ting Noodle House.

There were 4 of us and the menu didn’t have set for 4 so the waiter suggested us to order dry bak kut teh for two(RM16.00) and the usual bak kut teh for two(RM13.00). The dry one is spicy, great for those that like spicy food, the usual one is just usual bak kut teh hahaha…

Left: The chilies of course. One with light soy sauce, another with dark soy sauce.
Right: The vegetable that we ordered, RM5, very small plate -.-” A bit too pricey.

While we were dining, the owner of the shop came out to greet us, hmm… It could be me kept snapping picture of their food πŸ˜› He asked us how it tasted and so on. Hahaha… I must say that this guy is really working very hard to build his empire. There are so many branches in Kuching, one of them is at third mile.

I’m not a bak kut teh fan so don’t ask me nice to eat or not πŸ˜› However, many people did give it good feedbacks though.

Gawai This Year With Diesel Woe

Posted on June 3, 2008June 3, 2008 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Gawai This Year With Diesel Woe

This year is quite different from the previous years. One obvious different is that both my maternal grandparents are no longer with us. We went back to my mom’s kampung this year for Gawai visiting to visit those relatives that I totally have no idea about. They had helped out during both the funerals and as a gratitude, it’s best to pay them a visit.

While on the way to Serian, dad wanted to refuel the car(we needed diesel) so that we could go visiting to the other kampung later. Guess what!?!? All the petrol stations along the way in Kuching, Shell and Petronas, had no diesel anymore!! *HORROR* Luckily when we’re at Kota Semarahan, we decided to try our luck at the newly opened Shell station. YAY! They had stock. WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON!! AARG!! *ANGRY* Immediately not long after that, more and more vehicles coming in to get diesel -.-” Imagine hunting for diesel all over Kuching and had to go till Kota Samarahan to get it, the agony… If this problem still going on you’ll defintely see all the chaos in Malaysia. Maybe no subsidies of fuel might help? This is not my opinion, I read it from somewhere, don’t remember where. It stated that the subsidies are making it worst. *SHRUG*

My first time visiting so many houses during Gawai and OMG so many unknown relatives I have *LOL*. Just for your information, I didn’t attend both funerals due to some unforeseen circumstances so I’ve never seen most of them. All these years, my parents only brought us to visit those relatives closest to us instead of the further ones. This year is really different and exhausting. The weather didn’t help much too as it’s hot and humid and later in the evening it rained! Had to coat in the rain when we visited the last house and when going back to our car.

Anyway, main aim is to show you the must-have during Gawai besides tuak(rice wine). I’ve never drink any and my mom’s kampung doesn’t have it also because they don’t make it due to their religion. Here are the local delicacies that you will usually see during Gawai.

Left: I’m no sure what people call this :p We call this “beehive” hehehe… The sweetened flour(not sure which type of flour though) batter is placed in a mould and deep fried. It would float out to the oil surface from the mould once it’s cooked.

Right: This is known as kueh jala, jala means net. I would say this is the most popular among the local. These are not made from beehoon/vermicelli, it’s also from sweetened flour(not sure which type of flour though) and the batter is dripped with fast turning motion to make this kind of effect into the hot boiling oil using some sort of sieve, not the normal type of sieve though, it has many small holes, not too far and not too close apart to allow the batter to drip into the oil.

I DON’T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN!!! πŸ˜› hahaha… But I think you are smart enough to figure out what I’m trying to tell you *LOL*

Found this video, you’ll see how’s the process:

Left: I don’t know what to call this hehehe… Some crispy snacks with peanuts and achovies.

Right: Lemang!! It’s a must too! Glutinous rice cooked in a hollowed bamboo stick lined with banana leaf.

That’s all πŸ™‚ Frankly, I don’t really like to eat them hahaha… A bit can, not too much *BLEK*

Ten Ichi June Promotions

Posted on June 2, 2008June 2, 2008 By sweet surrender 3 Comments on Ten Ichi June Promotions

It’s a new month, it’s June. Lots of holidays in June. This is one reason you can hang out with your friends and family while enjoying good food. Here comes Ten Ichi’s June promotion!! It’s time to enjoy high quality Japanese food with affordable prices.

Let’s see what they have this month for promotion:

Beef Maki(RM16.90), this is recommended. The beef is medium rare, yummy! I love this! By the way, the photo on the left is as it is from the camera, I didn’t photoshop anything, I just resized it, I really like this shoot! Nice effect.

Salmon Ni Set(RM12.90), below the two pieces of salmons are vegetables cooked the Japanese way. This set comes with a rice and a bowl of miso soup. I love this too! Very nice!

The 2 below are only available on every Thursday and Sunday in June. Only RM9.90 each!!

Hiyashi Ramen, I love this! Just pour the sauce that consists of Japanese soy sauce and wasabi onto the ramen, mixed and enjoy! By the way, the wasabi here is super kick! It’s different from other places, a little bit of wasabi here is enough to make you cry *LOL*

Left: Spider Maki(RM9.90), softshell crab actually hehehe… I couldn’t eat this one go, it’s too big for my mouth πŸ˜› This is really nice too.
Right: If you are wondering where it’s located and need to contact them, the details are on this card. Just to make your life easier, it’s just below Lok Thian or next to Bangkok Thai Restaurant.

By just ordering the above 4 dishes, you will be very full! You can share them with 4-5 people, 6 or more if all of you are not big eaters. It’s not that expensive after you split the cost.

I’m giving something extra today πŸ˜› Be sure that you don’t wet your keyboard!! These are not on offer but just to let you know what other food you can get in Ten Ichi.

This sushi set(I don’t know the name :P) is RM20+, if you calculate carefully, it’s not that expensive, it’s almost the same as you-know-where, the take is that each sushi portion is bigger. They used local fish to ensure its freshness which only the expert knows how to handle the fresh local fish, not many people know how to do this. The cucumber maki in the middle is taller than you-know-where, in other word it’s bigger. It’s really worth it. It comes with a bowl of miso soup. The crab stick is not the usual crabstick, it’s imported all the way from Japan and it tasted different.

One more thing, you can try pick it up with your chopstick and shake it, the sushi doesn’t crumble at all! This is what you call a quality sushi!

This Teppanyaki set is great to share with your friends. It has beef, prawns, vegetables, sardine(this is not your normal sardine, it tasted different and it’s imported, I don’t remember from where though :P), cuttlefish etc. Hmm… If you are not ordering other thing, 2 people should be enough to share this set. This whole set, is only RM30+! The garlic rice is yummy! You can also order just the garlic rice for only RM2.50.

Left: Fruit salad, very refreshing, sweet and sour. Not available in the menu. Just to show it to you *LOL*
Right: Okonomiyaki (Japanese Pizza), this is not always available, only whilte stock last or the specialist and ingredients are available on that day. It’s only RM16!! With the ingredient on it, it’s really worth it and it’s enough to share around. They will cut it into pieces based on the number of the people you have.

Enjoy your meal πŸ˜‰ You can do your calculations, it’s really not that expensive compare to dining at you-know-where considering the quality and the portion.

D’ Grill

Posted on May 31, 2008May 31, 2008 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on D’ Grill

My new blog is up! :p Go visit it hahaha… irenelaw.net

It’s my first time going to Jalan Song with my parents last week. Only the 3 of us as my brother was out with his friend.

Anyway, mom and I ordereed western food at D’ Grill. If you are wondering where it is, it’s at Sin Wan area. I have no idea where’s their kitchen hahaha… They sat at one table with the signboard there. I think you will easily notice it.

Left: Combo Girll(RM15.50, if I recall correctly :P) Chicken with beef topped with black pepper sauce. the black pepper is very diluted and salty.
Right: Grilled Steak(RM9.90). The mushroom sauce was very diluted and salty.

Ok… Back to the meat, they didn’t ask us how well done we want our meet to be, it came and it’s medium rare, which is good, it’s not tough and dry, quite tender. The portion was OK. This is way better than those so called western cafes/restaurant. Just that the sauces were a let down.

Again… Pictures taken with my phone.

Travillion Sin Chiew Chicken Rice

Posted on May 30, 2008June 8, 2008 By sweet surrender 6 Comments on Travillion Sin Chiew Chicken Rice

Oh dear… I just found out that I can’t merge my two Ebay accounts πŸ™ I remember I saw it last time and it’s now gone. Search after search, found out that you can no longer do this in 2008. ARG!! It’s hard to sell with no rating at all πŸ™ Abandoned that account? But it’s verified for international selling already πŸ™

I didn’t know about Travillion Sin Chiew Chicken Rice until my dad told me hahaha… Actually I read about it before in many blogs but I have no idea about the exact name and location. My dad decided bring us for lunch there few days ago after I registered for my course.

If you still don’t know, I’ve decided to take up the diploma and start from scratch in a field that I have totally no idea of πŸ˜› Hehehe… By then… I have to say bye bye to most of my weekends and I will be even more busy too. -.-” I hope I can cope. *cross my fingers*

Anyway, let’s go back to Travillion Sin Chiew Chicken Rice.

It’s located at Ang Cheng Ho. It’s at the same row of shops as Spring Garden. It should be just behind Kuching Park hotel.

Left: My dad ordered their kolomee(RM2.70), quite big bowl but not so tasty.
Right: Baby Kailan, small one (RM2)

Left: Roasted Chicken Rice(RM3.50), if you opt for drumstick, it’s RM4.
Right: Steamed Chciken Rice(RM3.50), if you opt for drumstick, it’s RM4.

The chicken was OK but the soy suace used was very salty. Overall, this place is an affordable place to go. I pricings are very reasonable and cheaper than many other places.

P/S: Sorry about the colours, I forgot to bring my camera again… I took these with my phone πŸ˜›
