Museum Hotel, Penang

Posted on January 25, 2018January 25, 2018 By sweet surrender 3 Comments on Museum Hotel, Penang

Early this year, we went for short getaway with Air Asia direct flight from Kuching to Penang. Museum Hotel was our home for 3 nights. I booked this hotel(without breakfast) via AirAsiaGo combined with flight ticket(without meal and luggage) that cost us about RM1850.00 for 4D3N, 3 pax.

From the official website museumhotel.com.my:

Step back in time and savour the opulence of a bygone era at the Museum Hotel. Located in a restored historic building in the heart of George Town, this gem of a boutique hotel offers a unique glimpse into the golden past of this world heritage listed city. Each spacious, luxuriously appointed themed suite is one-of-a-kind. Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of Penang while you indulge your senses in luxury at the Museum Hotel.

If you drive, you don’t have to worry about parking, it is limited but they do have their own parking for their guests. The staffs were very friendly and helpful. We were served with refreshing cold lemongrass ginger drink while checking in.

Navigate through the hotel to our room, it’s like going back to the olden days.

I booked a room for 3 pax that can cater for maximum 4 pax. The room is known as QI LIN (麒麟) Quadruple Duplex Room.

Details from museumhotel.com.my:

The wondrous Qi Lin (麒麟) is an auspicious creature of Chinese mythology. It is said to herald the arrival of a wise or honoured personage, and thus are considered very good omens in Chinese culture. Our Quadruple duplex room is named for the lucky Qi Lin, and this room is suitable for a company of up to 4 adults. A wooden-floored living room on the lower level has a comfortable sitting area, and a flight of stairs leads to the upper floor bedroom, with a queen sized four-poster bed, and two single beds. The bathroom features two showers and double basins. The room includes all modern conveniences and amenities:
– Air conditioning
– 32” LCD television with satellite channels
– Free in-room wifi
– Laptop safe
– Coffee and tea making facilities
– Ensuite bathroom with double showers and toiletries
– Laundry service
– Colonial dressing table
– Straits Chinese wall mirror
– Brass standing lamp
– Telephone (In-house calls)
– Old English brass & porcelain switches

They led us to the room and explained how to use the room. We realized something too, the staff took of his shoes when he led us in. It was quite a surprise that it has two floors! Living area on the first; bedroom and bathrooms on the second floor. Very cozy place. Just one thing, 3 settees only… someone has to sit on the floor hahaha!

Few things to remember:
1. The fan speed cannot be adjusted.
2. Switch on bathroom heater for 5 minutes before shower and only switch off after everyone took their shower.
3. No need to remove the card in the wall slot.
4. Return the key to reception on the way out and collect it from reception on the way in.

The bathroom amenities were enough for us to use, except for the soap. Only two small bars, too bad… Love to shower with the oatmeal soap. I know… Can always ask for extra but hehe… lazy.

You do not need to worry about how 4 pax can share bathroom and toilet, there’s 2 toilets, 2 shower cubicles, and two sinks. So… No need to wait too long for your turn.

The beds were creaky hahaha!! It sure made lots of noise.

The staff were awesome already during check-in. When we got back to the hotel after a day out, there was another surprise. They placed traditional sweets in the room with a short note greeting you by your name and descriptions of the sweets given. First night was haw flakes, second night was peanut brittle, and third night was coconut sweets.

Overall, the hotel was way beyond my expectations. Great for friends and family(no children allowed if not mistaken) to stay if you’re in Penang. It’s not very far from the free shuttle stop too.

Address: No.76, Jalan A.S Mansor (Off Transfer Road), 10050 Penang.

Kedai Kopi Kim Hing

Posted on November 26, 2015November 26, 2015 By sweet surrender No Comments on Kedai Kopi Kim Hing

Kedai Kopi Kim Hing is located in Semenyih next to a primary school, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Sin Ming.

A row of old shops which housed a number of coffee shops serving different food. Always filled with people. This is the place for breakfast in Semenyih. The locals sure love this place. Food is good and cheap.

Left: Milo, very thick. This is the kind of Milo you should get in old school coffee shops in Malaysia.

Right: The signature dish of this coffee shop, steamed and toast bread with butter and their homemade kaya. OH! Heaven! Having pipping hot soft and fluffy bread with mixture of melted butter and kaya is sure a good way to start your morning. This is what you called Malaysian breakfast.

Left: The curry noodle from the other shop, just next door, not bad as well. It’s not as spicy as it looked. Many people ordered it too.

Right: Another breakfast item that Malaysians love! Soft boil eggs! This is from Kedai Kopi Kim Hing. I think they have their own concoction of soy sauce and pepper powder as they don’t taste like normal soy sauce or pepper powder. More on the sweeter side. Despite the unique taste, they are still good. However, I still prefer the usual soy sauce and pepper powder.

If you’re around, do pay them a visit, better go early as I’m sure they sold out fast.

Restoran Xin Shi Jie

Posted on November 18, 2015November 18, 2015 By sweet surrender No Comments on Restoran Xin Shi Jie

After we got back from the mountainous drive, it’s time for dinner. Had dinner at Restoran Xin Shi Jie (No. 21-G, Jalan Semenyih Sentral 4, Semenyih Sentral, Selangor Darul Ehsan, 43500 Semenyih).

Was quite exhausted already, not really in the mood to eat so just simply ordered some food which according to my bro, these are their signature dishes. Have not much details of the food. Just to share where you can find good food in Semenyih.

Mixed bean, crunchy and fresh. A little on the spicy side.

Left: Salted egg yolk deep fried calamari. This is highly recommended. I like it.

Right: Xin Shi Jie’s signature taufu. It tasted as it should.

Overall, the food is good and affordable. Just one thing though, don’t sit near to the cashier area if you can’t stand cigarette smoke. The lady owner is one hell of a chain smoker, goodness… First time I see this kind of smoker.

Fraser’s Hill

Posted on November 8, 2015November 8, 2015 By sweet surrender No Comments on Fraser’s Hill

The Fraser’s Hill is a hill resort located on the Titiwangsa Ridge in Pahang, Malaysia. We went there straight after checking out of Genting Highlands. It’s more than an hour drive but I don’t remember how long exactly was the drive. After a long winding drive, going up, up, up, we finally reached the place.

Was expecting a lot of human activities there since it’s one of Malaysia’s most popular nature and highland resort destinations. Yet, it’s deserted. You see more monkeys, birds, bees, ants, and etc. than human *LOL*

Temperature was quite nice. Very quiet place. We thought we could have our lunch here but couldn’t find a proper place for it. The only nearest choice is at Puncak Inn but we decided to just went down the hill to find food instead.

Almost all the attractions were closed. I guess it’s not holiday season, that’s why they don’t bother to open it.

Nevertheless, I did enjoy the nature photography here. Took these with my almost 8 years old Canon IXUS 80 IS.

Left: Monkeys everywhere! More monkeys than human hahaha… They seemed to be moving from one location to another. I’ve not seen so many of them before. It’s amusing to see them moving around via the cables rather than on the ground.

Right: One of the attractions, Allan’s Water. It was closed that time.

We just drove around and went down as there’s not much things there to see and do. However, if you would like to enjoy the nature and peace and quiet, this is a place to go especially during normal days. There’s many resorts for you to stay. Don’t expect anything else. I’m not sure about the holiday season but I think it should be rather happening.

At least, I’ve been here after learning about it back then in primary school. Another destination in Malaysia visited.

First World Hotel & Plaza

Posted on October 22, 2015October 24, 2015 By sweet surrender No Comments on First World Hotel & Plaza

Get to revisit Genting Highlands and stayed a night there. Good thing the hotel is refurbished… Phew… Stayed here back in 2008.

Left: As with almost 10 years ago, the lobby is still the same except now with a lot of self check-in and out machines. Such big hotel, you really need those. Salute those people maintaining and running the property. Not an easy job.

Right: The newly refurbished room. The bed and pillows were more comfy and the duvet is much better now too. Got the standard room located at the old wing.

The toilet configuration is really up to your luck. We had two different setups.

Left: The toilet, shower, and sink were all in one space. Normal configuration of any hotel room’s bathroom.

Two on the right: Toilet, shower, and sink were located separately at a corner. Same as the one I stayed in 2008.

The former was more comfortable to use, the latter was not that convenient and very narrow. I cannot imagine people who are very big size to squeeze into that tiny toilet and shower. I’m so petite and was feeling the space constraint already, cannot imagine really…

Another downside is the shower in general. The shower temperature was hard to adjust, a little adjustment can make a huge difference.

Oh! No view too. You’ll be seeing windows of another side hahaha… Who cares… Nothing can be seen at night anyway.

We requested for non-smoking floor, good thing we got it, at least our rooms were not smelling of cigarette. However, the corridor… Goodness… People just don’t care! They smoked there. So uncivilized.

I love how they have a water dispenser around the corner for refilling drinking water.

Overall, I’m satisfied with the stay. Cleanliness was there so it’s good.

Paying USD3.82 for these two rooms is a very good deal already. Hehehe… Total was USD28.82, I had enough points from one of the Online Travel Agent to get enough discount. Why waste? Of course utilize the benefit.

The new wing. Pay a bit more and you can get rooms at this wing. I was just too calculative to pay a bit more even though I had massive discount already. I was just praying high and low that the old wing’s rooms were refurbished. Took the risk and phew… Lucky!

Nothing change here… Still the same old same old when I came here for the first time in 2008.

A candy shop. Had fun seeing them making the candy.

Didn’t do much there but just walk around. We called it a night at around 8pm.

Breakfast at Nyonya Colors. Took the set. None of them in the photo on the left we liked… Tasted so-so. Very expensive breakfast. The only thing I like was the half-boil egg but it’s very expensive. Oh well… What to expect eating here? That’s their price range. I don’t remember how much but was definitely paying double to triple of the usual kopitiam‘s price.

After breakfast, we check-out. We drove down with very minimal visibility due to the fog. First time experience such fog. Rather scary but we reached the lower part of the mountain unscathed.

Goodbye Genting. Till I see you again but don’t know when LOL!
