Perth 3-7 Nov 2014: Part 1

Posted on November 16, 2014November 23, 2014 By sweet surrender 4 Comments on Perth 3-7 Nov 2014: Part 1

One week ago, I was in Perth. Now that I’m back, it’s time to get this post going.

It was quite a drama before the flight. I booked my ticket months ago but I never realized I need to apply ETA. Of all the times I went in and out of OZ without issue was because I was on my student visa. I totally forgot that now I do not have this luxury anymore.

When I check-in, the staff at the check-in counter inform me that I need ETA. I was shocked! It was 1 1/2 hour before flight. Luckily they told me I can apply ETA on the spot. MY gosh! Good thing I brought my laptop along and thank God for Starbucks free WiFi. Sorry Starbucks for using your WiFi without buying anything from you. Applied for it on the spot with AUD20 payment via credit card and I’m good to go! All done in less than 15 minutes. Thank God for everything! If it’s other country, I’m dead meat, all my money will just gone down the drain from flight ticket to hotel to tours! What’s more, it’s not only my money but my travel mate’s too! She did ask me about it the night before flight and I assured her that we can just go without visa. -.-

Left: Safely arrived KLIA2. Very confusing airport, not enough signage. Luckily we have ample time to navigate our way to international terminal. Before that, we had our dinner at Uncle Lim’s. Ordered the porridge, goodness! Blardy salty and the seasoning was overwhelming that we had to request for hot water to dilute it. Diluted it with one whole mug of hot water but it’s still too salty. Made us so thirsty after the dinner.

Right: Almost slept the way to Perth, good thing no one sat next to me but still not comfortable enough to sleep. The chair wasn’t comfortable. What to expect when you got no-frill cheap tickets and every single thing has to be charged when flying Air Asia? Trying to save as much cost as possible, who to blame but myself. Luckily it’s less than 6 hours flight, if more than that, it would be hell! However, once we’re almost there, we’re greeted by sunrise! Beautiful! Hello OZ sun! I miss you!

First food in Perth, breakfast in the airport while planning our next step once we’re out of the airport.

We stayed at Goodearth Hotel (195 Adelaide Terrace, Perth City Center, Perth, Australia 6004), was lucky to be able to get early bird deal AUD100+/night. If I booked few days earlier it’s less than AUD99/night. Still consider a good deal because it’s in the CBD! Walking distant to many places. It’s an apartment some more! Spacious and clean. Can fit 4 adults some more. The sofa can be transformed to bed. Very happy with it. Just one downside is that no early check-in allowed and check-out time is 10am. However, it didn’t affect us because we check-out extremely early in the morning, 2.30am!

Since we can’t go into our room, we ventured out to find places and started our shopping! This is the only free & easy day. The next four days were going with the tours.

Photos taken along the way…

Murray Street reminded me of Rundle Mall in Adelaide.

We also headed to Harbour Town and glad I went there, I managed to get 2 dresses for AUD30. Just too bad we didn’t have enough time to spend there. We went there using CAT, the free bus. See the grey bus with black cat in the photo? That’s the free bus that’s looping around the city. There’s 3 lines, so you have to plan your journey.

Christmas decorations are already up and the day was very sunny. Was tanned even on the first day out.

At night, we decided to visit the casino for dinner. Not for gambling. Was looking to try out the steak there, found offer there but I forgot the name of the eatery. Didn’t expect it’s inside the Crown Perth Casino. The photo here is the hotel lobby. Interesting architecture. One thing that got my attention, you actually can see people walk into their room, not your usual hotel design.

We saw Market & Co after alighted the taxi and I assumed this is the place. When I saw the menu, I thought maybe they changed the offer (AUD13.99 per dish) and didn’t bother to ask further as we’re too hungry. Just settled with whatever we came across. The steak should be Junction Grill inside the casino.

Left: It’s so filling! Cannot underestimate what you’re seeing. Love the Wagyu Beef Burger, Guyere cheese, lettuce, tomato, jelapeno relish, and fries. The fries was perfect too!

Right: Seared fresh fish of the day, pumpkin and spinach ragout, roasted beetroot puree. This was awesome too!

Overall, the meal was great! However, I would be more satisfied if I get to eat the steak. Didn’t get to eat any steak and Vietnamese pho this trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Hopefully next time.

That’s the end of our first night in Perth. Extremely cold night, was wearing all my autumn clothes that I wore back in Adelaide *LOL*. Day time was rather cold too.

Day 2 will come soon…

Mint & Basil

Posted on October 11, 2014October 6, 2014 By sweet surrender 4 Comments on Mint & Basil

Another Vietnamese establishment, Mint & Basil, this one at tHe Spring. The interior decorations is not bad. Quite nice. I like the style but it looks more like coffee chain to me than a Vietnamese restaurant.

I have high expectations on the pho bo (RM13.90), this pho didn’t live up to my expectations. It’s way too SWEET! That’s all I can say. Portion was OK and the price is OK for me. Not sure about the other food as I didn’t try the rest. Generally, I only eat pho.

Can’t wait for next month to have a proper pho in Perth. One of the food I miss the most in OZ. Even though pho is Vietnamese food but good pho can be found in OZ because of the Vietnamese community staying there.

Next time, I’ll try the one at Carpenter Street. Just not sure of its opening hour.

Speak Eazy The Alternative Bar

Posted on October 7, 2014October 6, 2014 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Speak Eazy The Alternative Bar

Another smoke-free bar in Kuching. Located at Carpenter Street and not too far away from Drunk Monkey. Speak Eazy The Alternative Bar (No. 61, Ewe Hai Street (Carpenter Street)) has different theme.

This is where you can enjoy some boardgames and chit chat with your friends. A very safe place to be, noticed many young adults or those in their late teens hanging out here. Space is limited means it’s safer and have better crowd control.

Best thing! No smoking!!

The choice of alcoholic drinks isn’t as extensive. Only a few but that’s good enough. They have food menu too. We tried the Eazy’s Chachos Pie (RM10), Chachos Chips with Chilli & Shredded Cheese. Yum! Love it! Great to go with cold beer. I highly recommend this. We also tried Somersby Pear Cider (RM16/bottle), nicer than the apple one, just too sweet. Therefore, have it with ice to dilute the sweetness.

Overall, it’s another great place in Kuching to hang out. Don’t worry about finding those annoying Ah Bengs or Ah Lians here. Not worrying about getting your whole body smells like a walking cigarette too.

Keep it up! We need more places like this in Kuching. I’m also glad that the businesses in this area are helping each other out. You can order food from other shops and they will send it over to you. This is the way to go rather than killing each other.

Library @ ST3

Posted on September 25, 2014 By sweet surrender 6 Comments on Library @ ST3

Library is finally in Kuching! I know I’m late in posting this hahaha…

Long long time ago… Now only post about it hahaha… It’s one of the happening places at night in Kuching. Located at ST3, went there once and won’t go back, just not my kind of place to hang out. Music is too loud for me.

Kids nowadays will tell their parents they are going to the library and who knows they ended up in this library instead of the usual library *LOL*

In the Library, you’ll find encyclopedia of course.

Left: Some of the drinks we ordered. I don’t remember the price anymore. It’s quite expensive, lots of alcoholic drinks to choose but not non-alcoholic ones.

Right: Nachos, not bad. Don’t remember any of the food price anymore. Too long ago.

We also ordered lamb shank and pizza. Pizza is just so-so, lamb shank wasn’t too bad.

Overall that night we spent about a total of about RM800 for 7 pax! MY GOSH! We never spend this much when we hang out. This is one record for us for sure. Hahaha… Actually, there were lots of alcoholic drinks that’s why. Stout, beer, and cider, ordered non-stop. I didn’t drink a single bit of them though.

Japanese Food Overloaded

Posted on September 17, 2014September 16, 2014 By sweet surrender No Comments on Japanese Food Overloaded

If you notice, I’ve been eating Japanese food quite a fair bit this year. The first I had ever since I came back was Minoru. Last time it was only Ten-ichi (monthly for food tasting) and random Sushi King.

Lately, it seems like Japanese cuisine is getting its foot into Kuching. Many establishments are mushrooming in Kuching. Even the franchise of Ajisen Ramen is now in Bouleavard but I haven’t get the chance to try the place yet, what’s more never tried it in Adelaide too even though I just lived a street away from Ajisen Ramen outlet.

This is the collection of Japanese eateries I’ve been to in the past 3 months.

Sanga Japanese Food (Lot 164, Jalan Chan Chin Ann, 93100, Kuching, Sarawak, 93100). It’s not new, it’s been a long time already but this is my first time coming here.

Left: Love Salmon Maki (RM15), not bad for the price. I hope the salmon was thicker but then of course this will mean more expensive. Nevertheless, it’s nice.

Right: Unagi Pizza (RM28), very tasty too. Not a bad place to have Japanese food. Price wise is reasonable too. These food can feed 3 average eaters but there were only two of us. We underestimated the maki hehehe…

Next, Rising Ramen took Kuching by storm. After listening so much about it, I went to try also. It’s located at Precint 88, Jalan Song, 93350, Kuching. Not far from Watsons. Went there twice.

The menu is very limited, it’s not a bad thing, means they specialized in what they’re doing. Their signature dish is their ramen (RM10) of course. Ordered their gyoza and Rising Roll. I don’t remember the prices for both.

I’m not expert in ramen, the broth is rather salty for me but the ramen was cooked just right. While the gyoza and Rising Roll is just normal for me. On the other note, the owner is handsome!! 😛 The place is always packed! Had to queue.

Lastly, Sando Ramen at ST3. Another ramen place in Kuching.

We ordered Original Miso Tonkotsu (RM17.90). Again, not really an expert in ramen and not quite a fan actually because the broth is generally too salty for my liking. However, the noodle was also nicely cooked.

There you go… The Japanese food trend which is invading Kuching these days. There’s more but I haven’t get the chance or the mood to try everyone of them out.
