Penang 7-10 Jan 2015 (Part 3)

Posted on February 8, 2015February 8, 2015 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Penang 7-10 Jan 2015 (Part 3)

Final second part of Penang trip. This is our last day in Penang. I’m splitting it into two posts.

First stop was Taman Rekreasi Kuari. Lots of monkeys around. Nothing much to see. If you are here for morning walk or hike, yes, you’ll find it interesting but not for us. Not even in proper gears for that.

We headed to Batu Ferringhi for the sea view and to hunt for lunch. We stopped at Hard Rock Hotel Penang for a visit and also toilet break ;p

My second time visiting a Hard Rock Hotel. First was in Singapore, 5 years ago. Didn’t take much photo. Just few snaps.

After that, we went for lunch. Most shops were not opened in the day, only at night. So we just drove to nearby commercial centre and we came across a roadside stall for quick lunch. Really have no idea of the location hahahaha…

Again… Tried out their Char kway teow. Hmm… At least it’s slightly cheaper here if not mistaken. Still, portion was tiny.

Ordered their duck and chicken rice which tasted as it should. Not to forget the teh tarik. This teh tarik wasn’t that sweet even though still sweet for me. If you are to compare it with the Indian stall, this one considered not so sweet. My first time had Indian teh tarik was back then I was in Penang years ago, it was way too sweet -.-”

We then took the new Penang Bridge to the mainland for another round of lunch. Seafood!

We went to Restoran Jety at Bukit Tambun (Jalan Bukit Tambun, 14100 Simpang Ampat, Penang).

Saefood overloaded! Price was cheap though, I don’t remember the price but for 5 adults, it’s considered cheap.

Left: Peanut on the table, it’s charged so just eat! Even if you don’t eat, you’ll be charged for it too.

Right: Lala, simply ordered this one and ended up it’s quite nice. Sweet, sour, and spicy.

Left: Oyster pancake, not my cup of tea. Well… Those from Kuching usually don’t like this type, our version is the crispy type. However, the oyster in there was generous portion.

Right: Nestum buttered prawn, not up to my expectations, kind of bland. The prawns were fresh, should have ask them to steam. It would taste even nicer.

Left: Vegetable soup. Felt like there’s a lot of MSG in there. However, the soup was packed with ingredients.

Right: Steamed fish, no idea what fish ;p also simply ordered and didn’t ask for price.

Overall, it was a good meal. Was stuffed! It was our late lunch, around 3pm if not mistaken.

After that, we headed back to the island. Next post will come.

CNY around the corner, haven’t start my annual baking. Thought wanna do it in the weekends but were occupied by going out shopping. Last time, I would do it on the weekdays but now with this job, where got such luxury?!?! Maybe will only be able to start on the last 3 days before CNY because I will be on leave, full swing baking!

Penang 7-10 Jan 2015 (Part 2)

Posted on January 31, 2015February 8, 2015 By sweet surrender No Comments on Penang 7-10 Jan 2015 (Part 2)

WOW! It’s been more than 10 days since the last post. Now, last day of January. How time flies!? 1st month of 2015 is gone…

Day 2, we had no plan. We just looked at the map and simply pick some places.

First stop was Kek Lok Si. Came here before so nothing interest me except the bird. Isn’t it pretty?

We then went down to for Pasar Air Itam Laksa (Jalan Pasar Road, 11500 Air Itam). The place was packed! We ordered 3 type of drinks namely (left to right) sugarcane, what’s-this? LOL! I don’t remember!! , and nutmeg.

Left: Penang Assam Laksa, the main purpose we’re here. RM4 per bowl. The previous time I was here, I also had the laksa. It’s nice. I like it.

Right: Deep fried lo bak, popiah, and so on… Nothing special to say about this. Acceptable.

After lunch, we went back to Georgetown and since it was raining, we drove around and spotted some wire arts on the street which are one of the tourist attractions in Penang. Saw the famous drawings too but didn’t take any photo because was inside the car and not in time to get the camera ready also due to the rain water on the windscreen.

After we found a parking, we went to Penang 3D Trick Art Museum (10, Lebuh Penang
George Town, Malaysia). Just opened not long ago and there’s still more trick arts to come.

We had fun. Just sharing some photos with you. Go and experience it yourself next time you’re there. I forgot how much we paid for the entrance fee. If you’re Malaysian, you get cheaper entrance fee. Staff was friendly and helpful. They made sure you took photos at the right angle and posed the right way, and they also helped you to take photos to ensure that all of you are in the photos, no one is missing.

After having fun, we’re hungry so we went to Bee Hooi Kopitiam (415, Jalan Burma, 10350 Pulau Pinang), we just went without doing any research, drove around, saw it and in we went.

Left: Since there is no way to go to Balik Pulau for har mee because I’m not sure how to go there, no proper address too, so we just ordered one here. Still prefer the one at Balik Pulau.

Right: Hokkien Mee aka Dai Lok Mien (RM5 if not mistaken). It was OK. Can’t comment much as this is my first time eating this in Penang. Last time, I always had this in Adelaide.

Left: Hokkine Char (RM5 if not mistaken). Again… Can’t comment much, first time eating here too. Don’t quite like the taste based on personal preference. Just not my taste.

Right: Char kway teow again… Still not a fan of it, still small in portion, still expensive ;p

I have no idea how much all the food cost. I wasn’t paying attention and was distracted.

Since, the rain came again, we went to Gurney Plaza because it was raining. Supposed to go to Gurney Drive Hawker Centre.

We ended up at The Little Nyonya Cuisine. It was packed. We had tom yam fish soup. Spicy and sour enough, very flavourful. Great to go with white rice.

Left: Nasi Lemak Special (RM8.80), just so-so…

Right: Chicken Lo Bak (RM7), not much to rave about too.

Left: Deep fried squid, salty, hard, and crispy enough. However, not too bad. Even though it’s deep fried, not oily at all. I ordered it because I’m craving for salt and pepper squid.

Right: Bubur Cha-cha (RM4.30), I don’t remember the taste.

Overall, the food is fine, just average. Price wise is reasonable.

That’s the end of day 2. We will see when day 3 will be up hehehe…

Penang 7-10 Jan 2015 (Part 1)

Posted on January 20, 2015February 8, 2015 By sweet surrender 4 Comments on Penang 7-10 Jan 2015 (Part 1)

Let’s see will I manage to get this post done before CNY hehehe… Not many photos taken and not many places we went. It’s my second time in Penang.

The trip was rather unplanned even though ticket was booked months back. We touched down, hopped in the car and looked for our apartment. After that, just drove out without much plan.

While driving around, E&O Hotel (aka Eastern & Oriental Hotel) popped up in my mind. One of the luxurious hotel with historical values in Penang. So we ended up there. How funny! First time visiting this hotel. Instead of tourist spot, we headed to a hotel.

The view from the parking lot next to the hotel.

Views from outside the hotel.

Very nice hotel, old but well-maintained. Very grand! Love the ambiance. Not cheap to stay here. One day maybe… At the same time, I took the opportunity to get some ideas and inspirations for work.

After the hotel, we went to Gurney Paragon as it seems like it’s gonna rain. While we were there, there was one incident there that got the mall management and the tenants quite a bit of panic.

After window shopping, we went to Gurney Drive Hawker Centre aka Pusat Penjaja Anjung Gurney (172, Solok Gurney 1, Georgetown, Jelutong, Pulau Pinang) for dinner. Luckily we headed there earlier and when we were about to leave the rain came!

Right: Deep fried chicken skin and a type of prawn. Very crispy, not that oily too. No idea how much because I wasn’t the one who paid for this dish. Great to have it with beer heheh…

Char Koay Teow (RM6), we ordered 3 plates. I can never understand what’s so nice about this dish. I guess I’m not a fan of such dish no matter where it is. Truth to be told, eating this dish in so many places, the Penang Char Koay Teow has the smallest portion (so small that it is even smaller than my small hand -.-“) and the most highly priced of all. I guess it’s because of the prawns and sometimes the cockles in there. With such price, you can get triple the portion of char koay teow in Kuching with the same ingredients. However, no doubt the breath of wok aka wok hey is high enough, I guess that’s why. Still, can’t convince me to make this dish my favourite food. Hahaha… Also, I cannot justify the price and the portion.

This stall, 71 has a long queue. We just followed the crowd hahaha…

Sambal stingray and sambal cuttlefish with four-angled bean. Spicy! Not sure of the price too as I didn’t pay for this dish.

So full from all these food. Thought of hunting for more food even though we’re full, the rain came and sent us away to Queensbay Mall for groceries before we called it a night.

That’s all for day 1. Let’s see when I’m going to get day 2’s post ready ;p

Fish Frenzy Cafe

Posted on January 15, 2015January 15, 2015 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Fish Frenzy Cafe

15/1/15 today!

I slacked hehehe… One week ago today I was in Penang. Now I’m back!

Haven’t post about food for quite some time. Went to Fish Frenzy Cafe (SOHO 188, Ground Floor Lot 18713 Block 11 Jalan Wan Alwi 93350 Kuching) few weeks ago.

A new shop at SOHO 188 area. There are so many eateries there now! Fish Frenzy Cafe is at the same row as Choice World. The interior is very simple. Be warned that you will smell of food after you dined there. It’s air-conditioned but the entrance isn’t closed. Not bad to eat there on a hot day.

Left: Clear Soup Fresh Fish Slice (RM10). The fish was fresh enough and the soup wasn’t overpowering. My parents said that the soup was quite salty the first time they went but this time around it was ok. You can order rice(RM1.50), noddle(RM2.20), bee hoon(RM2.20), tang hoon(RM2.20), and kueh tiaw(RM2.20) to go with it. There’s also other soup base namely sour & spicy soup and evaporated milk. Next time I’ll try the evaporated milk range. Should be interesting.

Right: Pork Five Spice Meat Roll (RM8), it tasted all right too. Just felt that it’s a little small in portion.

Overall, it was acceptable for me. Don’t mind going back to try other soup base.

Perth 3-7 Nov 2014: Part 5

Posted on December 27, 2014December 27, 2014 By sweet surrender 8 Comments on Perth 3-7 Nov 2014: Part 5

Last day in Perth. Met up with a friend who is one of my blog readers. We’ve known each other for more than 10 years! Too bad… We forgot to take photo together! MY GOSH! How can?!?! Finally see each other in person 10 years later! Don’t even know whether there will be any second chance, this might be the first and the last time. What’s more, few attempts to meet for the past 4 days didn’t materialize due to his work commitments, not even when I was in Adelaide for almost 2 years! We only managed to meet up for less about 15 minutes as he had to go back to work. Guess second time will be in Kuching, that also if it actually happens *LOL* I won’t go back in near future… Too expensive…

Anyway, after meeting up with him, we walked to Perth’s Chinatown. At first we thought it will be very far but it’s not far at all from Murray Street Mall! These are some views along the way. Most shops were still closed, we’re there too early. Couldn’t get the Vietnamese food we’re after. Too bad…

Our last stop was King Street before heading back to hotel for quick lunch before going for our Swan Valley tour. Didn’t buy anything on King Street, cannot afford it ;p Nothing fancied me there too.

Signed up with Taste Bud Tours for the afternoon tour. You’ll get TasteBud VIP Reward Card and enjoy savings with it. I didn’t use any of the discount as I didn’t buy much. What’s more, you can extend the discount privilege to your friends too.

Supposed to go for the morning tour but because there’s not enough people, we had to shift to the afternoon tour. Either way, it’s still good, just that we don’t get to eat ice cream hahahah… First stop was Yahava Koffee Works.

Tried lots of coffees. I’m not a coffee person but I love the smell of coffee, not the taste. I don’t really drink coffee and it makes me sleep. However, I don’t mind munching on the coffee beans, just like eating nuts *LOL*

Also had the chance to try out the chai latte. Thinking of buying it if it’s good but nope… Not the taste I’ve been looking for… Really miss the one back in Adelaide.

Next, we went to Margaret River Chocolate Company. Since we’ve been to the shop before on the previous Margaret River tour and also that morning at King Street, we headed straight to the shop next door, Coward & Black and also where you can get Providore products. Tasted some really nice chutneys but didn’t buy any as I have no idea what to do with it back home hahaha… Most of the time, these things will be left in the pantry with no one touching it. So just tasted it there. You know how things taste so good at the original place and no longer tastes as great when you bring it home.

Next stop, Cape Lavender. Thought of buying something here too but at the end went back empty handed. Nothing I need.

We get to sample unique lavender infused scones, jam, cream and refreshing tea. The scones was freshly made, still hot when we had it. I like them.

Now to Jarrah Ridge Winery, wine… OMG! I love love love love the olive! I was so tempted to buy a pack home because it’s so cheap compare to back home but afraid that the bag might burst on the flight back. Try lots of different type of wines too. Cheese as well… Ah… Wine, olives, and cheese… Great combination, I could just have these whole day while lazing away! However, I don’t know how to enjoy this sort of thing back home, the feel is just not there. This is the thing I’ll do in OZ only. I miss the place… Doesn’t matter it’s Perth or Adelaide. Just wish I can extend my stay there *dreaming*

The House of Honey is next. I’m sucker in collecting honey. I bought miniature honey if I do visit places that produce honey. Collected the ones from NZ and Kangaroo Island. Now this one from WA.

Was looking forward to this shop. Hmm… I just realized something above the door when I was editing this photo… Isn’t this a Chinese feng shui thing? How come it’s there? The owner believes in such thing too?

Left: Oh dear! Ice cream with honey! Too bad I didn’t try it out because we’re in quite a rush and had been trying out sweet stuffs a lot. It took me ages to finish an ice cream so I didn’t want to risk it, no food allowed in the tour bus too. At least I tried honeycomb ice cream before in Rottnest Island. Better than none. Maybe next time, then again… When???

Right: Bees! Not my first time seeing them. Seen them before at the Royal Adelaide Show. It’s pretty fun watching them in action.

So many awesome products there from food to skincare. I only bought a small bottle of honey, nothing else. I still have honey skincare products I bought from NZ, still trying to finish using them. Tasted all sort of honey too, interesting… Never know each honey has its unique taste. Yes… I did buy honey whenever there’s chance but those places didn’t provide sampling. I bought them as souvenirs only, not for consumption.

Coffee, tea, wine, honey, now to some sweets and nuts… I was sugar high!

Mondo Nougat and Morish Nuts, located side by side. Only bought some nougat as gift. Didn’t buy any nuts, better don’t buy any because I have uric acid problem so have to reduce nuts consumption, actually alcohol too hahaha… However, there’s no way to avoid it this trip ;p

After that, off we went to The Juice Hut. Very nice juice they have. It’s all fresh, no preservative, no fillers, it’s just pure fruits and vegetables goodness.

Last stop was Ironbark Brewery, just next door.

I opted to sample the ginger beer. Ok… It’s just ginger beer. I didn’t feel any difference from what I had in McLaren Vale, SA. Didn’t order other drinks aside from that as was rather stuffed already from all the tastings the whole afternoon! That’s not the end as there’s one last food to have. Our early dinner!

There’s a list for us to choose and we went for the “Wood Fired Pizzas”. The pizza we ordered was packed with so much ingredients! Luckily we ordered one only for two persons, still it’s a bit too much, could feed three because of the samplings we had before coming to this place. The pizza was great! Even better to go with beer for sure 😉

This is the end of the tour. I do recommend this tour if you are on tight schedule like us. It’s quite fast pace, sometimes you wish you can stay longer in one place but you can’t, that’s the only downside. Other than that, it’s great tour to sample a wide range of food and beverage. You will also be in the good hand of Loris, the person behind this tour.

We got back to the hotel and packed like crazy and called the night early! We had to catch the flight at dawn and we went to the airport at 3am if I recall correctly. Goodbye to Perth.

That’s the end of my Perth post. Only 5 days, too short, too fast, but covered quite a fair bit of places. Wish can be longer. See you again Perth… Just don’t know when…
