Duan Wu Jie

Posted on June 19, 2007June 19, 2007 By sweet surrender 11 Comments on Duan Wu Jie

Sigh… My Advertlets‘ cheque is not here yet, everyone got theirs already but not mine. Where are you? It’s not Advertlets‘ fault, it’s the post office’s fault! It’s a bit too long already, I’m expecting it last week and it’s not here yet, thought of getting it this week, nothing here yet 🙁

It’s that time of the year now! Rice dumplings… Yum… Yum… Well, I have rice dumplings even when it’s not the festival. In Chinese it’s called “Zhong Zi” and the festical is called “Duan Wu Jie”. In English I think it should be Rice Dumpling Festival hahaha…

These were from Lundu. There are two types, pork and another one is yam. The one showing here is yam. I don’t know who to make this. I don’t want to learn too hahaha… So tedious *blek* We don’t do this ourselves, usually given by relatives. As for other days, we just buy them.

Wondering what is the story behind this festival, here’s something from the Internet:

Duan Wu Jie is a day to commemorate the Chinese patriot and poet, Qu Yuan. Falling on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, it is a day to remind oneself of one’s duties and obligations to the nation. Other than eating rice dumplings and participating in dragon boat races, this occasion ought to be used to commemorate the national patriots and to emphasise on the importance of loyalty and commitment to the community.

During the tumultous period of the Warring States, there lived a wise and learned man called Qu Yuan (340 – 278 B.C.). He served in various official capacities in the Chu Kingdom. Evil court official, being antagonised by Qu Yuan’s ability and reforms, influenced the weak-minded emperor to dismiss and exile him.

During the next 20 years following his exile, Qu Yuan travelled extensively and composed verses on what he saw and thought. With the progressive occupation of Chu land by the Qin Kingdom, Qu Yuan was totally disheartened. Finally, being overwhelmed by misery, Qu Yuan clasped a stone to his chest and plunged into the Mi Luo River (in Hunan province) on the fifth day of the fifth month.

Upon hearing Qu Yuan’s suicide, the fishermen set sail to look for his body, hence began the tradition of holding dragon boat competitions. However, Qu Yuan’s body could not be found and people started throwing rice into the river to feed Qu Yuan. Later the local fishermen were told in a dream that the fishes and other sea creatures got the rice instead of Qu Yuan. Therefore, the next time they threw rice into the river, they first stuffed it into bamboo sections. This custom is later evolved into the present day version: rice wrapped in bamboo leaves stuffed with meat, beans, salted egg yolks, mushrooms, etc..

I don’t think we have dragon boat races anymore in Kuching. Hmm… Happy Duan Wu Jie!

Chong Qing Steamboat(2)

Posted on June 18, 2007June 19, 2007 By sweet surrender 1 Comment on Chong Qing Steamboat(2)

It’s Fathers’ Day yesterday, we went to Chong Qing Steamboat for dinner, mom was lazy to cook and took the excuse of because it’s Fathers’ Day and my sister is back from UK to dine out. *LOL* We decided a few places and at the end ended up at Chong Qing Steamboat hehehe… Since it’s Fathers’ Day I’m sure many eateries were packed so went there to avoid the crowd and it turned out that there are quite a number of tables were taken already.

Left: The dipping sauce.
Right: “Fu zhu”, don’t know what it’s called in English. 😛

Left: Singapore fishballs.
Right: Frozen tofu. This is quite nice. It came in cubes, pretty hard, I thought it’s chicken meat in cubes hahaha… coz they are frozened. Then you have to quickly dump them into the steamboat to cook. When it’s cooked, it’s so soft and it socks up all the soup, WOW! Nice… Forgot to take photo of the cooked frozen tofu.

Left: Cabbage as usual…
Right: Shitake.

Left: Pork.
Beef: Beef.

Left: Chicken.
Right: The steamboat with most of the ingredients in there except the meats.

By the way, this time they did ask us whether we would like to have the spicy base filter or not. I said yes because I’m not sure how spicy my parents could handled. The difference of filtered and unfiltered base is that you don’t see all the herbs and the dried chilies in there except the red dates(small one), it seems like the big sweet red dates were missing too last night. Good thing is that last night was a cold night 🙂

Oh my… Suddenly I want to eat this now! -.-“

Again, the location is at Tabuan Laru, same row as AmBank. If you are facing AmBank, the direction is to your right. Oh… The menu is in Chinese. I think no one can help them do the translation ;p I can’t help too, I’m not good enough hahaha… If I’m good I would be able to give you the english name of “fu zhu” *LOL*

goahead! Yogurt Breaks

Related post: Chocolates & More…

Hehehe… Ate one of the flavours, Plain Yogurt Breaks. The other flavours are strawberry, tropical fruits, and forest fruits. It’s sweet but I can tolerate this type of sweetness means it’s not that sweet *LOL*. I love it. This is low fat yogurt bar hehehe but then who cares? I don’t think I need any low fat food. It doesn’t matter at all.

I thought there’s only one piece in there but there’re two quite thin pieces(refer to the photo). The yogurt only covers one side instead of the whole piece. There are sultana in the middle. The the outer layer is light crispy biscuit.

There are so many type of textures in this bar. First the creamy coat of yogurt that is sweet and sourish, then the biscuit is crispy and tasteless. Lastly the inside is sweet and soft.

Yummy… Ok… Done with this yogurt bar. By the way, it costs 1 Pound per box, there are six individual packs per box.

I have another type of bar of the same brand. It’s different from these four. Will blog about it soon when I manage to get hold of it, in other word, eat it 😛 I think I will move on to chocolates next hehehe… We’ll see…

Chocolates & More…

Posted on June 17, 2007June 18, 2007 By sweet surrender 28 Comments on Chocolates & More…

My sis brought these back from UK.

Left: WOW! Didn’t expect to see chocolates from Hotel Chocolat!!! All these while I’m just drooling over them in the Internet, I never expect to see them right in front of me that enable me to touch, smell, eat and even take photos of them up-close Hehe…

As for the chocolate bar is not from Hotel Chocolat, it’s dark chocolate from Guinness. I will blog about them one by one when I eat them hehehe…

Middle: Hot chocolate with Courvoisier.

Right: Green tea with mango flavour.

Left: Cadbury chocolate drink, you can get them here.

Middle(top): Fox’s Classic, honeycomb biscuits covered with real milk chocolate.

Middle(bottom) & right (bottom): goahead! yogurt bars, there are 4 flavours. Then the other one is another type from goahead!

Right(top): McVitie’s HobNobs.

Hmmm… I think you can get most of them here at Choice Daily, Selections or Pop-In except those in the first group.

Causeway Bay Hong Kong Restaurant

Posted on June 14, 2007June 14, 2007 By sweet surrender 20 Comments on Causeway Bay Hong Kong Restaurant

Not sure where to have lunch today and ended up at Causeway Bay Hong Kong Restaurant at Crown Square. Many people already complained about it. I don’t know to complain or not. The pricing are definitely quite high but for the drinks’ prices are OK, I think… Definitely more worth it to have a drink there than at Mr. Ho’s.

Left: The entrance.
Right: The interior with very special lightings but hmm… I felt strange under this kind of lightings.

Left: The other side of the interior. Two huge pictures of Hong Kong skyline on the wall, very nice but very polluted place. I mean Hong Kong not the restaurant 😛
Right: (L)Tea In Hong Kong Style(RM2.80), it’s just milk tea! (R)Cold Jasmine Tea(RM2.80), huge jar and the straw was too short, I had to tilt the jar to finish it 😛

Left: Black Pepper Sizzling Noddle with Chicken Chop(RM6.90). You can opt for mushroom sauce too. Pretty big portion. Taste wise was OK.
Right: Mushroom Sauce Sizzling Noddle with Fish Chop(RM6.90). It tasted like tomato instead of mushroom but not tomato enough. Don’t know how to explain. Big portion and I almost couldn’t finish it. You can opt for black pepper.

Hmmm… *Shrug* Don’t seem to have much complain with me. However, I don’t have the urge to go back for second time. By the way, 5% GST would be charged.

Why do you want to dig that far?
