Penang Day 5 – Part 2: Goodbye Penang

Posted on November 13, 2008October 11, 2013 By sweet surrender 6 Comments on Penang Day 5 – Part 2: Goodbye Penang

After Gurney Plaza, our friends brought us to some place, not sure where and I forgot to take photos of the place ;p It should have since I’m the only one not buying anything and just waiting for them.

Anyway, after buying our friend brought us here… The famous cendol stall in Penang, Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol + Ice Kacang. We didn’t order anything as was too full from the previous brunch. However, they did order this “che chao jui”(directly translate from Hokkien to English is green grass water, I guess ;p) I’m not sure how it tasted coz I didn’t drink any but according to my friend, it is very good to lower the heat in your body. This cup is RM0.80 if not mistaken.

After that, we went into this coffee shop called Joo Hooi Cafe, it’s just next to the stall I mentioned above. We were told that the Penang Assam Laksa here is also very famous but again we didn’t manage to eat it, too FULL ;p

One the way back to our car and one the way to the airport.

Since didn’t have the chance to take photos of the street of Penang because we were always in town when it’s dark.

Finally we’re at the airport.

After checking, we took some photos of the aquarium there.

More fish. The yellow fish caught my attention, it’s so bright.

The departure hall.

Some planes there. It was raining so heavily and our flight was late but we reached Kuching on time.

On the flight. Can’t really see the sunset as it was raining.

Finally, it’s the end of my Penang trip post. Hope you enjoy them.

Penang Day 5 – Part 1: Seoul Garden @ Gurney Plaza

Posted on November 11, 2008October 11, 2013 By sweet surrender 4 Comments on Penang Day 5 – Part 1: Seoul Garden @ Gurney Plaza

Our friend told us to go to Gurney Plaza on the 5th day morning for breakfast or lunch which is also our last day in Penang. our flight was in the afternoon.

So we woke up in the morning, packed our stuffs and cleaned up the house. How can you not clean up when you are staying at people’s place for free and use their car for so many days right? After that, we still have time to rest for a while before heading out because there wont’ be many places opened the shopping malls in Penang before 11am.

Off we went to Gurney Plaza and looked for brunch. We came across Red Box and said why not we go to Red Box and sing until the time to go to airport *LOL* However we couldn’t because our friends were supposed to meet us there at around 1pm and bring us to buy some Penang’s specialties.

We walked around and ended up at Seoul Garden. It was a mutual agreement, we were attracted by the all you can eat buffet! Hehehe…

Here, we had our brunch. We asked for Kimchi soup but to our dissapointment, it’s sweet, not spicy at all.

However, they got lots of choices for you. We were so happy with it! The things they offered were of quite good quality. Even the free flow drink that cost us RM3.99 wasn’t diluted like what you got in Kuching where they add lots of ice. Here, they don’t do that, the drink is really original exactly like how you got from the tin with no ice.

The meat was well marinated, even the vegetables section offer things like green pepper too. LOVE IT!

The ready cooked food were also good and didn’t look “cheap”, the potato salad was tasty, the kimchi was sweet(dissapointed), the coleslow fresh, and the seafood were nicely marinated too.

So many choice and they were fresh, maybe because we were there in the morning ;p The dessert section was so colourful! There were so many ingredients there, cendol, jellies of different colours, gula Melaka, milk, lime, crushed peanuts, red beans, fruits, syrup etc.

I wonder why is the banana placed there along with the eggs and various type of dried ingredients?

They also got fries and how can you don’t have various type of “balls” for steamboat right? No food wasted is allowed of course.

YUMMY… YUMMY… YUM! Was fully stuffed! Stuffed to the max that it lasted me till dinner time.

We are going to almost the end of my Penang post. Finally… One last post tomorrow.

Penang Day 4 – Part 4: Penang Bridge, Queensbay Mall, T-Bowl, Ferry

Posted on November 10, 2008October 11, 2013 By sweet surrender 8 Comments on Penang Day 4 – Part 4: Penang Bridge, Queensbay Mall, T-Bowl, Ferry

Lots of places in one post ;p My Penang trip post will come to an end soon. It’s time to see the famous Penang Bridge. Our friend brought us to somewhere in Bayan Lepas where there’s a jetty that is specially built only to transport people to the resort which located on an island(in the photo).

Me and the bridge. I don’t look good in the picture ;p That’s the problem when you didn’t get enough sleep hahaha…

After that, we went to Queensbay Mall. WAH! I didn’t know there’s Forever 21 there! Hehehe… Actually I’m not a fan of Forever 21, just that I heard many people raving about it.

Some views of the mall. Many shops not opened yet.

This is where you can roller blade and also there’s playground for the children.

Next, we went to have our dinner at T.Bowl, a concept restaurant. It was so packed that we had to wait to be seated. Very special!

You will be sitting on the toilet bowl, dining on a sink or bathtub and eating from toilet bowls or bathtubs too hehehe…

Our drinks: Mocha Blended(or Cappucino, not sure and don’t remember the price too), Blue Curacao Bubble + Vanilla Ice Cream Mocktail(RM5.50), and Limon.Sourplum Mocktail(RM5.50).

This dish is Beef Chop Rice(RM12.90), this is served in a big bowl and this soup is called Tomyam Seafood Flaming Pot(RM12.90) served in toilet bowl.

You wanna eat poo poo?!?! There you go! Hehehe… It tasted very nice actually. This is their signature dish called Signature Giant Sausage(RM12.90). The English name wasn’t that yucky but the Chinese name was really yucky ;p It sounde like “poo in intestine”. Even the look does look like one.

Fish Fillet Baked Rice (RM13.90). It’s under the Toilet Bowl Cheese Baked Rice category. Then the bathtub is mushroom soup, it’s tasted very “chinesey”.

Signature Chicken Baked Rice in Twin Sauce(RM13.90).

Anyway, you can find out more at their website: http://www.t-bowl.com

After dinner, we walked around the mall and played some arcade games at the children arcade game section in Jusco departmental store.

Before we went to get the car from our friend’s house, our friend brought us to ride the ferry! ;p Hehehe… We drove over the Penang Bridge first then after that went to wait for the ferry ride to go back to the island. We waited at the ferry waiting point for almost 45 mintues if not mistaken.

On the ferry. The moon was so round and bright. For the first time, I see so many jellyfish in the sea.

Basically, that’s the end of my fourth day in Penang. I haven’t edit the photos for the fifth day ;p

Penang Day 4 – Part 1: Fruits, River, Beach

Posted on November 7, 2008October 11, 2013 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Penang Day 4 – Part 1: Fruits, River, Beach

Day 4 destination was a bit of mystery. Didn’t really know where our friends brought us. We spent most of the time being quite close to nature.

We had breakfast at the same place we had our tea break on the second day. My friend bougth some local kueh for us to try.

No idea what they are ;p Hehehe… Anyway, we parked near this place, End of the World. WAH! Such “unlucky” name. CHOI!

First stop was Tropical Fruit Farm. We didn’t drive up instead we walked up. Very tiring *LOL* What to so? Someone never do exercise one hehehe… The fruit you see here is nutmeg.

These were the dessert we had after breakfast ;p Don’t remember the price but all these are great for sharing. By the way, it’s best to don’t buy any sweet at this place. I bought a packet of nutmeg sweets and it cost me RM6 but when in town and in the airport, the price was so much cheaper than buying up there. Felt cheated.

It rained that time, so we waited for the rain to stop while savouring our desserts and enjoying the view.

Next stop was Air Terjun Titi Kerawang.

Since it’s rainy season, it’s not that recommended to play in the water, not like we intended to play also ;p Just went there to have to look.

Since the current was too strong, we couldn’t see much of the waterfall, so we just viewed it from afar and took some photos around.

After that, our friend brought us to a beach where it’s not known to many tourists except the locals. It’s actually at the same location of National Service Camp, this area should be called Balik Pulau if I’m not mistaken.

See how big the grains are? You can directly feel the difference once you are barefooted.

View of the beach to my left.

View of the beach to my right and I left my name there ;p Not my slippers of course!

This is the small island that we saw on the way down to hunt for food ;p

One last view of the sea.

After that, we were on the way to find the famous Penang Assam Laksa at one of the villages in Balik Pulau. Finally we’re here! It’s such a seclude place and there were so many people drove all the way there to have their fix of Assam Laksa and also their Har Mee (I think that’s what they called it, since there’s many prawn and tasted “prawny”). Don’t even ask me how to go. Even my friend got lost when wanted to bring us there ;p

Left: The famous Penang Assam Laksa. This was the only one we had in Penang. It’s very delicious. Different from Sarawak Laksa, duh~ Don’t ask me which one is the best because both are GOOD! Both use totally different ingredients, therefore you cannot compare them. It’s only RM2.50! CHEAP!
Right: Har Mee, hmm… Nothing much to rave about this. The Assam Laksa is still the best. Also RM2.50.

Next, we will go to see turtle and experience the war time.

Penang Day 3 – Part 5: Dinner, Desserts, Flood, Supper

Posted on November 6, 2008October 11, 2013 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Penang Day 3 – Part 5: Dinner, Desserts, Flood, Supper

Back to Penang post ;p Not even halfway tru’ at least this is the last part of day 3.

Day 3 was a long day for us. After all the temple visits during the day time, we went for dinner.

Our first stop for dinner was Yi Garden. This is in the town area. I’m not sure about the details but I think it’s somewhere around Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Centre. We were told the wanton noodle is good and the porridge here is very popular also.

Left: O Jien, we had many in Penang if you notice ;p They were all so cheap. How can you get this price in Kuching with so many oysters in it! This is only RM5 and can share among 2-4 people or even more, depending on your appetite. So far, this is the best o jien that we had in Penang.

Right: Wanton noodle(RM3.50). Hmm… Nothing special to me but the wanton is very succulent.

Left: Our friend order another wanton dish without noodle just to eat the wanton.

Right: Don’t know what these two called. Looks like Cantonese Char to me.

The porridge that my friend recommended. It’s not the mushy type.

Next round, we went to next door. Got more choices here and the place is cleaner and bigger. The previous one was so crowded and we were practically sneezing when we’re there because of the smell of curry if not mistaken hahaha…

They ordered a bak chang. There’s salted egg yolk in there if not mistaken.

Left: Chu chang fen, no idea how much but should be below RM3. The sauce was so sticky and sweet! To me, it felt like jiu eng chai sauce that is too thick ;p However, coupled them with the sambal, it was really nice. Again, their chu chang fen got no filling unlike what you get in Kuching.

Right: This is the main thing that we wanted to eat there. The thin crust, very cheesy pizza! It was really so cheesy! YUMMY! LOVE IT! It’s baked using the traditional way, not with electric oven. It took a while to came but it worthed the wait. I’m craving for it now! OH NO!!! The price? I have no idea but definitely cheaper than Pizza Hut.

After dinner, our friends brought us to a fishing village where the village is built on the water. We went there to sit on the jetty to enjoy the night view of the sea and sea breeze. It was so dark when we walked to the jetty but when we reached, there’s a small temple there that was well-lit. We just sat outside the temple and chit chatting there. The location is near Penang ferry. We could see the ferry from here too.

Left: After that, we went for some Chinese dessert and something to cool our heaty bodies. This is the most expensive “meal” we had in Penang. Just drinks and some desserts! RM40+ for 6 of us! I almost got heart attack when I heard the price. It’s a shop that is quite popular and even featured in newspapers.

Let me introduce the dessert here to you:
Start from the cup, clockwise: Shen Si(not sure how to say in English, it’s the very fine ginseng, not the big type) tea; Guilinggao; Di Ya Kueh with gula Melaka, it tasted like ki chang(chang with no filling) to me when eating it without the gula Melaka, I hope I got the name right hehehe…; Tauhu Hua; Xuet Kap, I don’t know what this is called in English but it’s something very expensive.

These were basically what we ordered but some of them we ordered more than one. That explains the expensive bill especially the Xuet Kap.

Right: After the expensive desserts, it’s time to go back. Our friend drove us back with his car instead of us driving because we need to send the car back to another friend as her father needed the car so we would be car-less on day 4.

When we were on the way, it rained so heavily. When we almost reached Batu Feringghi, OMG! FLOOD!!! DAMN scary! We didn’t want to take the risk to drive over the water so made a u-turn back to town and stopped at one of the coffeeshop called KHALEEL(it’s everywhere in Penang, many branches hehehe…). We had teh tarik there and roti tissue while waiting for the rain to stop.

At about 12.30am if not mistaken, the rain was so much smaller and off we went back. Good thing the flood receded and there were landslides along the way. Scary. Still we managed to go back home safe and sound. Only manged to sleep at around 2.30am -.-“
