Hay Pia (Prawn Cake)

Posted on July 16, 2009 By sweet surrender 6 Comments on Hay Pia (Prawn Cake)

I’m sure many locals know what this is. In fact, I’m not sure the real name of the dish, we at home usually called it hay pia (in Hokkien), “Hay” means prawn and “Pia” means cake. It’s deep fried flour cake with couple of prawns on it.

However, this whole dish is not only consist of hay pia. There are other things like hot dog, sweet potato, yam, bishop nose, fish plate, fish ball, and many more, all those deep fried food. When we say want to eat hay pia, it won’t be just hay pia but those other stuff that I mentioned will be part of the package.

The popular one was from Rex, we used to buy it from there but now… I don’t know where they move to. We usually buy ours now from Peach Garden Cafe at Pending Height.

I think the tastiness of this dish is the condiment, chili sauce and grounded peanut. These two must be good else it will not taste good as you know those deep fried stuff taste the same everywhere. It’s just a matter of crispy or not.

I won’t say the one at the usual place we buy is good but it is enough to satisfy our craving for it.

175° Cafe

Posted on July 13, 2009July 14, 2009 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on 175° Cafe

175° Cafe located at the ex-Tao. Opened not quite long ago and decided to go there for our small gathering.

You can get free fish spa there and free WiFi. However, it is best to make reservation in case you want to try out the fish spa coz the place is limited.

Left: 3 big red lanterns at the staircase leading to the dining area. The staircase is scary (at least for me ;p) -.-” It’s so steep hahaha… There’s no proper handrail that I’m so afraid that I might lose my balance, I’m very bad in balancing ;p

Right: You can either hang out downstair or upstair but the place is limited upstair as in more suitable for large group. Smaller group can hang out near the fish spa.

Left: Section of the dining area. Some said it’s too plain, not enough decor, I think it’s just nice. Too many decors will make the place look narrow and messy. My friends quite like the tables.

Right: Hot caramel (RM7), nothing much for this, just caramel *LOL*

Left: Hot Latte (RM7)

Right: Long Black (RM6)

The feedback I got for the coffees were not bad.

Delicious Beef-Burger (RM8), had given my feedback to them. The patty was fine with me.

Left: Pan-seared Beef Steak (RM16), the good thing was that they didn’t pour the sauce on the meat which is good. The beef steak was requested to be cooked medium rare and they did. You can opt to have either mushroom sauce, black pepper sauce, or their home-made fragrant sauce.

Right: Chicken Chop (RM12), already gave them my feedback about it. It seemed not bad just the size a bit smaller than expected and they said that they will improve on it.

If you want to try it out or make reservation you can call 082-258593, they also have lunch set for those want to have lunch and the price is quite reasonable.

Hoi Tin Lau

Posted on July 6, 2009 By sweet surrender 6 Comments on Hoi Tin Lau

Last Friday, Lee’s bro treated us for dinner at Hoi Tin Lau and also to brief us on what to do the next day for his wedding.

Last time Hoi Tin Lau was located at Grand Continental Hotel but now it’s located at a new place at Jalan Mendu. You know… The Dua Puluh Sen and Guardian there, there’s reflexology center too. It’s at the block behind them. Hoi Tin Lau served Chinese cuisine and it’s not halal.

I have no idea of the food name(I’ll just make it up myself) and the prices though. Just show you the photos and all I can say is the food was YUMMY! SERIOUS! It’s really DELICIOUS! I’m out of word to describe. All of them! Ok… Except the peanuts, I don’t like to eat this kind of peanuts ;p It was fully packed that night.

Left: Our appetizer. Sweet & sour midin. First time having this kind of midin. Usually we have it stir fried with belacan or garlic. This is the sweet sour variation, served cold.

Rght: Seafood noodle, it’s green, it should be green if I’m not mistaken. Under the lighting and from the photo it seems green to me but was browned by the sauce. My first time having green noodle ;p

Left: Combination dish, there were 4 types of food there. For the first time, I ate abalone(that’s what Lee told me when I asked him, I’m not sure it’s abalone or not hahaha…). Yea… My first time.

Right: Deer meat cooked with some sauce, don’t know what sauce. Very tender meat. My first time eating deer meat.

Left: Fried kailan, great dish. It’s always one of my favourite. This is my 3rd time having this dish. The one here is different from those I tried before, it had hint of sweetness because pork floss(assuming only, it could be chicken floss) was added.

Right: Butter prawn was great! I prefer this than the one from Sarawak Club. It’s sweeter but the sweetness is different from the sugary sweet. As if marshmallow was used *LOL* Not sure ;p Just judging from the sticky texture. looked as if it’s melted marshmallow. This is one of the best wet style butter prawn for me.

Two thumbs up and two toes up from me!

Just word of warning, the place is extremely noisy. Oh well… It’s like this in many Chinese restaurant anyway. If you are having a stressful day, better don’t go there hahaha…

Asam Payak

Posted on July 3, 2009July 3, 2009 By sweet surrender 10 Comments on Asam Payak

I think asam payak is no stranger to the locals but I was so wrong. Apparently many don’t know what is asam payak. I tried to find details in Google and got many unrelated results. I can’t seem to find any details for it even wiki didn’t turn up in the result, that’s so odd. I blogged about it years back, now… I’ll blog about it again.

If you’re wondering how’s the taste, it’s sour, very sour but I LOVE it! ;p

In fact this “fruit” (I don’t know which category should it be) is used in many food in Malaysia such as asam laksa or umai. I don’t have much details to share with you. All I can tell you is that it’s sour, only available during its season, June and July(I think… Since I saw it a lot last month and mom bought it this month ;p).

The dish you see here is asam payak served with mixture of belacan, chili, anchovies, sugar and salt. The taste? Sour, salty, and spicy hahaha… Not sweet because less sugar was added and if you have too much sugar for it, it will not taste nice. The main thing to savour is the sourness. It can be served in other way as well but this is the usual way I eat my asam payak.

One word of advise, do not eat too much and when you have empty stomach, you’ll get stomachache.

The Eatery @ Four Points

Posted on June 30, 2009June 30, 2009 By sweet surrender 5 Comments on The Eatery @ Four Points

Remember the prize I got from 4th Sarawak Bridal Fair? Complimentary buffet lunch from Four Points by Sheraton.

I’m supposed to go with someone else but sadly this someone let me down. This someone doesn’t even bother to get back to me as promised. I was told “next week, next week…” and the “next week” never come. Even until today, it’s the last day of the voucher validity, there’s not even a single feedback from that person. Well… I told this person before, “if you still treat me as your friend, please arrange a time for us to go together since we’ve been talking about it since last year.” So… Can I say that I’m not a friend to this person anymore? Not that I’m being sensitive but this is the fact, I’ve been treated by this person like a stranger for most of the time.

All I can say is that, I’m very disappointed with this person. Enough is enough.

Few weeks back, I decided that I shouldn’t wait for this person to go with me, good thing I made the right decision. If I did wait, this voucher is going to be wasted.

I decided to go with Allen since he was the one who picked me up to the bridal fair that time. If not for him I won’t be winning the voucher. What Louis said was right, I should go with Allen. Since Allen’s birthday was coming, so I decided to make this a birthday present for him.

Off we went… Not much photos because I was not allowed to take photos there. I know… You see many blogs posting the photos of this place but sadly I’m not that lucky. I should just shut up and don’t ask.

I asked the person that brought us to the table whether I could take photos or not because I’m afraid that I might be stopped for taking photos halfway and there were many people that time, it will going to be oh so humiliating. I saw many staff there, looked like security guards walking around the restaurant, to avoid unwanted issues I asked for permission and got turned down even after I passed them my name card. Boo…

The place was packed later as the Pre-School convention was held there. The participants went to have lunch there and I saw many of my classmates there. I didn’t greet them though ;p Too far.

Anyway…
Left: Taken last time.

Right: Sneakily took a snap when the security guards walked to other section. The section you see in this photo is the candy section. So many candies! I should have ta pao some back! However, I forgot all about it because I wasn’t feeling very well that day and my mind was distracted by something else. Sigh…

I did not eat much, I was not really in the mood to eat, I didn’t have much appetite that day. Such wrong timing. These were what I had eaten, so little -.-” Luckily I didn’t pay for it therefore the feeling wasn’t that bad ;p

Lots of choices to choose. The pizza was the best. I didn’t like the meats, just any meat except those from the appetizer section, because they were so dry and overcooked -.-” Others were fine. I did not go for the cakes because they were all sponge cakes with different decorations and some local kueh lapis(if I recall correctly). I managed to try out 24 types of food.

After lunch, we decided to check out the swimming pool. I love it! The green, the blue and the brown blended so nicely with the bright blue sky and fluffy clouds.

The reflection was very nice too. Great place for photo shoot. How I wish I could swim there, it was so hot that day.

Enjoy the photos.
