OMG! I only got to know about it today. My bro is in form 3 this year and will be sitting for his PMR end of this year. It’s about his class. You know that the Ministry of Education is trying to introduce sex education in school but hmm… I’m not sure is there any or not?
Now, let’s go to the main topic. According to my bro, his Science teacher really sucks big time. Why? Ok… I’m not condemning the Malays or Muslims. I don’t see there is anything wrong for you to teach your students about sexual health/organs. He told me that his Science teacher couldn’t explain this topic clearly to them and kept trying to censor what she said. If you remember, we used to have one of the chapters that covered reproduction organs right? Here’s an exmaple:
A _____ is a male reproduction organ. (Answer is “penis”)
Teacher:*Write the answer on the board*
Students: *Copy the answer*
Teacher: This is you-know-lar. No need me to explain futher.
Students: Why?
Teacher: Because of my religion, I’m not suppose to talk about it. (not the exact quote but it sounded something like this)
WTF!!! For goodness sake! What is it so hard to explain what is a penis or vagina or scrotum or sperms etc. to your students? She couldn’t even bring herself to say the word! We didn’t ask you to talk about how to have sex!!!! I mean like explain to them scientifically, like what it does scientifically. No one asks you to explain to the students how to use it such as carass it to make it erected and you can play with it with your mouth or your pussy yada yada yada… (-_-“) You tell them that it’s a “PENIS” not “Willie” or “Captain Strong” or whatever name you have for it.
I’m sure your religion does not forbid you to explain and teach your student properly about sexual reproduction organs. Teaching them how to have sex is of course not right, that’s for sure. You are a teacher, can’t you explain it properly instead of always having to censor your words using “you know lar“. Summore it’s in the textbook and all you have to do is rephrase them! There is no need for you to explain about your sexual life or others’ sexual life to them. If you don’t explain properly to the students, what do you expect them to do? Go back home, hook up the Internet and type in these keywords and search for it and they 100% ended in porn sites. So… There you go… They are going into the wrong sites and learning something wrong. Blame who? Blame the parents? Or should blame the teachers?
With this kind of attitude and mentality, do you think sexual education can be successfully implemented in schools? NO WAY! If it’s already in the system, then I guess during this period, the teacher won’t be teaching and will just let the students do their own works such as completing their homeworks or study as long that they do not make noise. That’s for sure.
What’s your say? It’s really too much. You’re a teacher not a sex guru! There is nothing wrong to teach your students about reprodcutions organs and what the heck that you took your religion as an excuse to not to explain to them in a proper way by teaching them about the risks and diseases that will affect their intimate organs if they do not take care of them, about periods, about erections etc.
Besides that, as you know, the current education system is using English to teach Science and Mathematics. Everything is in English but guess what?!!?! My bro said that his teachers never teach them in English, all the classes are conducted in Bahasa Malaysia(Melayu) or the Malay language! How on earth are you going to let your students excel in their studies when the exams, the exercises are all in English??!?!? No wonder parents are sending their children to tuition classes because you can’t get proper classes in school! If that’s the case, better no need to send them to school. Just send them to tuition classes will do. Then parents can save lots of time and money. Worst, not long ago I heard that they want to revert back to using the national language to teach! GOSHHH!
There you go… This is our education system. I never like it anyway. Good thing I’m no longer in it. Next time if I can affrod it, I wil make sure my children won’t be getting such crappy education, I’m going to send them out of here which means I’m leaving with them.
Thank you for the You Know Lar lesson
don’t ya know? it’s malaysian government’s tradition. giving contract to unqualified company. under performance minister. untrained teacher. u know lar….. :p
You know I know lar…
Talk is cheap Irene, are you sure you can ‘do it ‘ when you are in her shoes. Wish I have a bio teacher like you ha..ha..
Rocco, what’s the big deal with that? My previous Bio teachers and Science teachers never have problem explaining to us last time when we’re in this chapter. It’s all scientifically explained though we made some jokes from it but they are cool with it. That’s why I don’t understand why this teacher can even use religion as an excuse for it summore can’t even say those words out, they are not bad or swear words, they are just scientific and general terms that are even used in the textbook. -_-”
By the way, welcome
i agree with you that as a science teacher, one can’t shy away from calling a spade a spade, or a penis, or a vagina, or breasts, or whatever reproductive/sexual organ they happen to be discussing about at the time. because, really, what use is a bio teacher if he/she can’t discuss the reproductive organs objectively and scientifically?
how do you expect your students to understand and gain knowledge, if you yourself can’t find it in you to view basic human physiology objectively?
IMHO, that teacher got it *so* wrong. all religions want their followers to seek knowledge. If, in the pursuit of knowledge, one has to call a penis, a penis… then call it a penis, lah. It can’t help what it is. there’s nothing wrong with calling a thing by its rightful name…
… or mayhaps that teacher had something other than just the study of human physiology and reproductive organs in mind…. hmmm… then that’s another matter…
WAHLAU
so ciak sai wan!
haahahah….yup!..last tiem my bio teacher had no prob with this chapter too! even tho shes a malay!
i still remember we had lots of giggles n laughs whenever we talk abt this..haha
and omg!..i never knew they teach the english syllabus like that!!!siao ah!…if they still teach in bm, might as well stick to bm syllabus lah!…
Pink Cotton, yealo… That’s why I really don’t understand. I’m not sure about other school, not all schools are like that, but there are sure schools that do this. At least that’s what my bro encountered. He even said, those teachers can’t even pronounce those English words properly -_-“
zyrin,
Welcome! I guess she thinks too much. *LOL*
WRONG MENTALITY!
From the way she acts about it, she treats it as a shameful topic, and that’s not the true way to teach students! The students will think that this subject is taboo (which, btw, is so barbaric) and it should be an open subject to be discussed without reverting to immature behaviour like this, from a teacher no less!
I agree with zyrin, this is human nature… and should not be ashamed of it. Nothing wrong or taboo about it.
And I share your sentiments, Irene, about bringing up my children elsewhere but it’s not that simple. Moving is a BIG decision…
Yes, moving is big decision, that is why I said if I can afford it. The only way is to get a husband from overseas
*LOL*
look how they handle teaching math & science in english… i bet they never bother to train the teacher. sex ed is not a trivial subject, not a taboo subject. besides proper training, the teacher should also be mentally prepared and be able to counsel the students. else, instead of educating, add more confusion to the student.
i think u should highlight this matter with newspaper or complaint to education ministry. be a good citizen :p
pretenders, hahaha… Frankly, many teachers aren’t good in teaching using English since they are in the the era where everything was taught in Malay Language. With such switch to English, I guess they are not prepared at all summore their English is already bad enough since from last time. *LOL* I’m not saying my English is good lar, just that at least better than them lar
