The 4-Year-Olds

Posted on November 24, 2010November 25, 2010 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on The 4-Year-Olds

I’m sure you’re are curious about my practicum that had just ended 2 weeks ago. Going to share with you some photos that I managed to take.

These were taken during the concert rehearsal at a local restaurant. I couldn’t make it on the actual day of the concert because I had class to attend.
Left: Dikir Barat, the only performance with a 3 years old in the group of 4 to 6 year-olds.
Right: Fan Dance, combination of 4-6 year-olds.

Due to privacy reason, I mosaic their eyes. Still you can see how cute they are and how they love the camera so much! I think photographing children is fun!

I was assigned to the class of the 4-year-olds aka year one preschoolers. They’re young enough to be my children. Imagine if I’m married few years back, I would have a child this big already! It’s pretty scary when come to think about this hahaha…

I’ve been with them for more than 2 months. I’m in-charge of their daily reading programme. There were 17 of them in a class, more girls than boys. The photos show only 13 children, 4 were absent. However, the last photo, the 4 absent ones were there as it was taken the next day.

The colouring sheet they’re holding was given by me to occupied them while waiting for their turn for one-to-one daily reading programme as I was the only adult in the class during this period of time. My mentor was on leave and I was asked to take charge of her class. Not easy… Luckily there’s another teacher helping after the reading session. I would go nuts if I’m being left with them for the whole morning once they completed their assigned tasks. Must make sure to give them as much work as possible to settle them down especially during the reading session else the whole second floor could collapse! Or you’ll start to hear them crying and complaining because they started to play rough. Oh well… Children… What do you expect?

In fact, there were some that they were not 4 years old yet, on the way to 4 years old. Very smart children I must say, they could colour quite well. They could cut quite well also. Oh yes! Kid you not! They were trained to handle the scissors in preschool year 1! I was surprised as most kindergartens/parents would not let 4 year-olds handle scissors but not this school. They were only allowed to use the scissors with the teacher’s permission. Once they finish the cutting task, scissors must be put back into the container. They were given with clear instructions that they should not misuse the scissors. It’s a task that the children appreciate a lot as they couldn’t do it anywhere even at home. It’s great for their hand-eye coordination.

Gonna miss them heaps even though some of them really made me want to drive up the wall especially when they misbehaved *LOL* Who doesn’t?

Why do you want to dig that far?
