Turtle Eggs

Posted on March 18, 2009March 19, 2009 By sweet surrender 22 Comments on Turtle Eggs

OK! I know some people is going to flame me for this post but before you want to do so, please read the content carefully before you say anything. What I need here is your help and not your whatever oh-so-mighty lectures. I know I might be making a fool of myself or something for posting this but you better don’t make a fool of yourself here when commenting. Thank you!

I don’t encourage people to eat turtle eggs and it’s wrong!

I’ve been thinking whether I should post about it or not for more than a year because it’s obviously illegal to consume turtle eggs.

Seeing it in the newspapers last week or so about turtle eggs being served in a banquet really blew me off my mind because it was in a banquet attended by our beloved law enforcers. HOW CAN? Personally I know some people that like to eat these eggs but they don’t do it publicly with all those publicities.

Tell me what will you do?

If you are given with turtle eggs, already cooked, will you eat them or throw them away? Now here’s the problem, it’s already cooked, so how?

If you are given with turtle eggs that are not cooked yet, what will you do? What should we do? This answer will be able to help us save some of the turtles instead of going into the cooking pots.

I’m not afraid to admit that I ate turtle eggs before. Was first introduced to them 20 years ago. We don’t like them at all from the beginning, the yolk is sandy and the egg white is GROSS to the max. It’s different from chicken egg, the egg white just doesn’t become solid, it’s slimy. However, the problem came when it’s given to us cooked. People would give us once in a blue moon. What should we do? Throw them away? The thing is that they’re cooked, you can’t do much, will you eat?

I don’t know really… They’re cooked, so might as well eat them? Throw away will be a waste.

What you see in the photo(photos taken years back) are already cooked. Was given to us after it’s cooked. Ended up we very relunctantly ate them and it’s YUCKY! Even with all the sauces and so on to cover up the smell and the texture. The thing was that, they were cooked, furthermore they can be eaten, it’s food, you don’t throw food away right? This is the dilemma. Sigh…

I know I’m taking a huge risk of posting it here. Can anyone tell me, what should I do? If it’s you, what will you do?

HOW!??! As it seems like now is the season and who knows people might give them(especially cooked ones) to us again so I need to know what we should do besides telling them not to give us anymore. What else can we do? You know sometimes you cannot reject on things certain people give you. Any good way to let them know that this is a serious matter? They know it’s wrong, tell them it’s wrong won’t help, they already know it’s wrong but still buy them. What else can you tell them?

AGAIN! I have to stress that I do not encourage eating of turtle eggs, it is WRONG! It’s illegal! I need to know what is the next step to do when given with cooked or fresh turtle eggs.

I liked them. But I haven’t had it for yonks! I think I ate it only once or twice in my life which was when I was a little kid.. Haven’t had that for ages. But I don’t miss them as I prefer not to eat them now.

I first had it was very small also, I can still eat it even though it’s yucky but the thing is that we know that now that it is wrong and we shouldn’t be eating but when you are given with them, it’s really really hard to waste it especially when it’s cooked.

I’ve followed your blog for quite sometime. I first came across your’s when I was working at The Borneo Post. I believe your blog should contain more social issues, such as this one on whether it’s okay to consume turtle eggs when they are presented to you cooked.

My take on the matter is very simple: Just say no, no matter what the situation is.

It is not rude to reject whatever you find against your liking, and more importantly, against your conscience . In this case, it is also a legal offence.

Furthermore, I strongly disagree with people who say, “I don’t eat turtle eggs because it taste yucky”. That cannot be considered a valid argument.

That line of reasoning is selfish at best and criminal at worst.

We can’t make judgements based simply on personal liking or taste.

Our actions and decisions must be based on a clear understanding on what’s right and what’s not. It’s so important to think of matters like this in a wider context.

Returning to turtle eggs, I would never eat them even if I’m told they are the best tasting eggs ever. It’s just wrong because they are an endangered species.

In fact, the next time you come across someone serving turtle eggs, you should take a photograph and lodge a report — just like what the good journalist did.

Yu Ji, I know you’re from BP, read your columns before ;). Thanks for your suggestion but do you mind to post any contact that is related to the relevant authority so that it can be a reference as I’m sure many people don’t know who to contact(I’m one of them) about the matter and summore now even those people(that supposed to uphold the law) are eating them in the banquet.

jimmy, LOL… allergy to it, this kind of excuse cannot use la ;p

  11. Yu Ji says:

The best place to lodge a report concerning endangered species would be the Sarawak Forestry Corporation.

    Tel: (+6) 082 348001
    Toll Free Line: 1-800-88-ALAM

Level 12, Office Tower, Hock Lee Centre
    Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim
    93450 Kuching, Sarawak,

    http://www.sarawakforestry.com

SFC has its own enforcement unit to deal with such matters.

And if I’m not mistaken, members of the public cannot even possess endangered species. This means keeping an endangered species as a pet is also a punishable offence.

To know what’s on the endangered species list, you can request a free poster from SFC.

Meanwhile, you can also make a police report. The police are legally obligated to accept all reports, even when it is against one of their own.

The Kuching police headquarters can be contacted at: 082-274222, although it’s easier to lodge a report directly at the One-Stop Police Centre, which is next to The Spring.

Just remember that you’ll be helping out the authorities a lot by submitting evidence (like photographs and key information like correct address) together with your report.

Unfortunately, most of us fail to approach authorities because we do not believe they will take our complaints seriously.

Nonetheless, consider that authorities prioritise their efforts according to statistics.

They’re more likely to respond when the numbers pile up.

Last but not least, visit the Malaysian Nature Society’s website, http://www.mns.org.my, for more information.

Thank you very much, the information is very helpful. Sometimes it’s pretty worrying that if you lodge the report with the wrong department, it might ended up in their cooking pot rather than being handed over to the rightful authority.

I don’t have lengthy advice. I just wanna say that you can reject the offering this time. And you can just tell them it is wrong whether or not they take it. This is the only thing we can do. I don’t think you should report them because they should be someone you know for long that give these turtle eggs to you, right?

  14. sweet surrender says:
    March 20, 2009 at 11:04 am

jam, oh well… That’s why. Say it’s wrong also no use one, they already know it’s wrong but still commit it, the thing is that there was a time told them it’s wrong but who cares, it’s still given to us after that, one side in, one side out. The most just cook up excuses to reject, like you said it’s people that you know, how to report summore they won’t give you any details on it, they’ll just tell you, it’s food just eat!

  15. Bern says:
    March 22, 2009 at 1:38 am

‘Now here’s the problem, it’s already cooked, so how?’ – If you ate those been cook… more will be served to you. If you throw away what been served… there won’t be next serving…it is better to waste once.

Anyway, in Malaysia it is illegal to consume it…. but our neighbor, there is plenty … including turtle meat!

  16. sweet surrender says:
    March 22, 2009 at 3:56 pm

Bern, if you throw them away, the people that gave them to you won’t know, they will thought you had eaten them, it’s not like you in a banquet where you can just leave it there and not eat it, this is when people give to you, bring it all the way to your house, you can’t possibly throw it away in front of them, to ruin a tie just for the turtle eggs are just not worth it especially they are the people that just like what Jam mentioned. To sum it all up, all I can say is that we will just to cook up white lies to reject it which will be much better.

  17. Rose says:
    March 23, 2009 at 3:38 pm

I ate turtle’s egg before. Not to say I dont like it, but it is of no nutrition value any sort, it just like normal chicken egg.

to avoid been in dilemma, probably tell the person who gave you the eggs that it is illegal and you dont like eating them. it is high in cholesterol. Save the turtles by not buying from those illegal traders!!

  18. sweet surrender says:
    March 23, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Rose, yea.. very high in cholesterol, no benefit in eating them too. Bad for health and illegal.

  19. Ann says:
    March 24, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Agree with Yu Ji above. For me, I never think about it as a waste, or if it tastes yucky. It goes against my conscience to eat it. If it’s given to you, you can halt any more of these incidences by telling whoever gave it to you in the first place not to give you any more.

  20. sweet surrender says:
    March 24, 2009 at 9:30 pm

You have to see the situation and who you are rejecting. So it’s either you just reject them or you make up lies as not everyone can take rejection gracefully or you will end up with something worst.

  21. Ann says:
    March 26, 2009 at 3:36 pm

Hmm… this all sounds so vague. Like you said, I probably need to look at the entire situation. It depends on which one you’re comfortable with – white lies or the truth.

  22. sweet surrender says:
    March 26, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Ann, have to look at the situation. What to do.
