Astro Launches New A-List Channel

Posted on October 2, 2013October 10, 2013 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Astro Launches New A-List Channel

This is the event that we were supposed to go last Friday but we couldn’t attend due to the flight delay. Nevertheless, I’m still going to share with you what was it all about.

Are you ready to be on the A-List? Movie connoisseurs can look forward to a brand new and exciting experience with the launch of A-List, Astro’s latest HD channel to showcase the best award-winning and critically-acclaimed international and regional films. A-List will be available on Astro channel 456 from October 1st, 2013.

(Left to right) Astro launches new A-List channel; Agnes Rozario (VP of Content Management, Astro), Liew Swee Lin (CCO, Astro), Henry Tan (COO, Astro) & Teng Lee Yein (VP of Acquisition & Distribution, Astro)

The A-List channel will be available for Astro’s pay-TV customers in Malaysia and Brunei, and they are working on making it available to audiences regionally in the future via Astro On-The-Go and other TV platforms.

A-List models at the launch of Astro’s new HD channel, A-List

A-List titles will be presented in its original language with multi-language subtitle options available. Every month, A-List will premiere 8 critically-acclaimed titles from film international festivals such as the Busan International Film Festival, Berlinale Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival.

How Astro’s A-List titles are curated?
Award winning and nominated titles are carefully curated to be on A-List based on the following criteria:

  • Themes, relevance, whimsical and unique take on issues, ability to provoke thoughts and discussions
  • To showcase the works of new and exciting film makers
  • To premiere the most talk-about international titles in Malaysia and the region
  • Real life stories and relevant social-economic and political landscape of the world and the region.

In October, the A-List channel will premiere 8 contemporary films including films that are based on real life events such as “National Security” which is authentic and raw in its telling of the story of South Korea’s former minister, Kim Jong Tae’s arrest and interrogation over 22 days for his involvement in the democracy movement. It gives viewers a glimpse into South Korea’s modern history.

Other films include Berlin-7, which is still on the film festival circuit and tells the story of the struggle and survival of an Iranian man who moves his family from Iraq to Berlin to keep them safe after the US attacks Iraq. Also, not to be missed is the Academy Award winner for best foreign film, The Secret in Their Eyes set primarily in contemporary Argentina with intermittent flashbacks to the 1970s when the country was descending into a military dictatorship, the film is by turns a whodunit (and why), a romance and something of a love story.

On a lighter note, catch the South Korean romance comedy, How to Use Guys with Secret Tips, starring Lee Si Young and Oh Jung Se, which won awards at the 2013 Udine Far East Film Festival and at the 2013 FanTasia International Film Festival. For more light-hearted romance comedy, watch the Taiwanese film, When Wolf Falls in Love with Sheep that won numerous awards at the 2013 Asian Film Awards.

Two-times Oscar winner Sir Michael Caine will entertain you with this love story about a suicidal stubborn old man who finds love and life again, after meeting a young woman by accident in the comedy drama Mr Morgan’s Last Love, directed by multi award winning director, Sandra Nettlebeck.

Astro customers can expect more new and exciting contemporary titles to be added on the A-List channel in the coming months like Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Joss Whedon of The Avenger’s fame and which won the 13th Belfast Film Festival Audience Award and A Monkey on my shoulder, starring Juliette Binoche who won numerous awards. Customers can access the A-List channel via a monthly subscription of RM 15 for 8 titles for Astro Byond pay-TV subscribers in Malaysia and Brunei as well as ala carte purchase of titles at RM8 per title via Astro Byond VOD.

MH = Malaysian Hospitality?

Posted on September 30, 2013October 8, 2013 By sweet surrender 7 Comments on MH = Malaysian Hospitality?

Bear with me, super duper long post. Since there’s someone who said that I like to whine and complain a lot, then here you go…

MH = Malaysian Hospitality? Oh… I’m thinking twice about it now. As some of you know, I was one of the media from Kuching who was sent to cover two events last weekend in KL, I had the privilege to fly MH which many people envied and I could also collect Enrich point. It’s my first time being flown to cover event after so many years of blogging! So excited! There were 8 of us from major newspapers in Kuching and I was the only blogger.

Last Friday, 30th September 2013, I went to the airport to take the flight that was supposed to fly at 10.50am. I knew no one from the media that time, saw a few but wasn’t very familiar with them so basically we’re all pretty much strangers to each other. Finally we boarded the plane, sat there, waited for take off. It was an unusual long wait, almost half hour if not mistaken.

Left: I looked up, oh!!! First time saw this hahaha… I was sent a photo of this last year by someone when he was on business trip telling me he’s on such old plane ;p Never thought that I will be seeing it with my own eyes so I took a photo of it while waiting just for the fun of it.

Ok… Before you people start saying that many planes are old, flying more than 20 years and so on but they are maintained at a very high standard. This I know. Don’t have to lecture me on that if you know who I had been in a relationship with before. I am always confident with the airline industry so it doesn’t matter at all to me how old the plane is. If it’s not flight worthy, it won’t be flying. Apart from that, I am in fact looking up to those in this industry with utmost respect. If I am tall enough, I would have apply to be an air-stewardess but too bad I’m not.

I’ve been flying a fair bit these few years. Never did I experience any delay, not with any airline (be it premium or budget, international or domestic, local or foreign carrier, I flew with SQ most of time for international flight when I was in Adelaide) all on time. However, the recent Europe trip, I did experience some delay when we flew back to Kuching with MH, it was a short delay, no big deal. It was my very first flight delay that time. This time… This story, it’s my longest flight delay in my entire life and had to change to another airline to fly at the very last minute.

Back to the story. I almost dozed off waiting because I was pretty sleepy, waking up very early and sleeping late the night before. Suddenly the announcement came, I thought it was just the apology for the delay and we would fly soon but it was asking us to disembark because of technical issue and the flight would delay for maybe 2-3 hours. It’s a good thing all passengers were rather calm about it, didn’t make a fuss at all.

Right: We were compensated with meal voucher. While queuing, we got to know each other as we were practically seated next to each other in the plane. We could claim either from KFC or Marrybrown. KFC we went. So we went out of the departure hall to go to KFC.

From there, we mingled around. Since our event was at night, so we thought that should be fine, as long that we could fly before 4pm, we would be able to make it. So we just informed KL side that our flight was delayed. No one would expect it would delay for more than 3 hours as we were confident that MH should have a better standard than AK. Finally, we heard announcement saying that we could fly by 2.45pm. Excited! Everyone went back to Gate 8 to wait but at 3pm, came another announcement saying that it’s going to be delayed again. Now! We started to panic! However, we still had faith, as long that it could fly by 4pm, we’re still in time.

Then suddenly, someone overheard people saying that the flight was likely to fly only after 7.30pm, a new plane with new set of crew will be flown in. This time, we immediately went back to the counter, tried to request to be slotted into any empty seats in any flight flying out at the same time claimed another meal voucher. There was no way for us to fly before 4pm, by the time we reached KL, the event would long ended already. We immediately informed our sponsor about it. After ding-dong-ding-dong, there’s no way to fly us with MH anymore and the representative of our sponsor from Kuching rushed to the airport at peak hour to “rescue” us and she bought us AK ticket to get us to KL.

Finally! We’re flying but with AK instead of MH. However, we still missed the event. At least we managed to get out of KIA after spending 8-9 hours in KIA! It’s amazing that we were still in surprisingly high spirit despite such delay. I was behind the camera. Photo taken while waiting to board our new flight. We’re a fun group of people 😉

We understood the difficulty of the airline. That’s why we didn’t make a fuss. However, what made us angry was that why there was no one from MH even bother to come out to inform us or check on us (all the economy class passengers, as I’m sure 1st and business class had managed to fly on the next flight) personally? It’s a crazy wait, people were getting frustrated, at least some MH staff should come and distribute bottled water to us as a token of apology or just have a chit chat to check on the passengers’ condition or something but no one showed up at all to do anything except making announcement via the sound system!

Many people also didn’t know they could claim another meal voucher for the wait. Is it so hard? It’s not 2-3 hours delay, it’s more than that. Should there be a simple courtesy by MH to do something to show that MH are truly hospitable? Where’s the Malaysian Hospitality that was promised? There’s also foreigners who got stranded, it’s not only Malaysians. What kind of impression are you giving to those foreigners? This reminds me of the Malay saying, “cakap tak serupa bikin”, means talk only but not executing it.

Just because we’re all flying economy, it doesn’t mean that we were less important than those flying 1st or business class. I am very sure AK is doing better in this part as some of us had experienced delay with AK but were compensated with RM200 voucher. No, don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean to request for such compensation from MH but at least show us that MH really cares about us, the Malaysian Hospitality.

MH, I’m disappointed with you.

ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL X and MINI (Kuching Launch)

Posted on September 26, 2013September 26, 2013 By sweet surrender No Comments on ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL X and MINI (Kuching Launch)

Alcatel is launching its two new phones in Kuching earlier on just now. It’s been awhile not attending such event. Please bare with me, I’m not a tech blogger, I’ll just talk about it from dumb user point of views hahaha…

Here’s ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI.

The size (127.1 x 62 x 7.9mm) is all right with me. It’s very light too (96g). It’s so light that I didn’t feel like I’m holding something and there’s a risk of it just fell from my hand if I didn’t pay attention. However, get a casing for it and it shouldn’t be much of a problem. There’s two colours for this, slate and silver.

The good thing about this phone is that it can support dual SIM, so you don’t have to carry two phones with you. The OS installed is Android Jelly Bean v4.2 with Dual Core 1.3GHz CPU. For me, it’s enough for my usage. I don’t really use much functions of such phone, as long I can make calls, SMS, instant messaging once in a while, basic web surfing, and camwhoring is good enough for me. The retail price is RM499, not bad for the price. Maybe I should get this to replace my phone hehehe… Wait… My phone is still working very well, better save this amount of money for something else ;p Maybe when I got a proper job and I’ll reward myself with this phone.

Next, this is ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL X.

It’s almost as big as my palm (140.4 x 67.5 x 6.9mm). Ok… I have small palm but this also means it’s too big for me, hard to slip it into my clutch too. It’s quite light too, only 120g. Two colours available, slate and red.

This one is priced at RM1099. Again, it can support dual SIM. The OS used is Android Jelly Bean v4.2 with Dual Core 1.5GHz CPU. The camera is definitely way advanced than ALCATEL ONETOUCH IDOL MINI.

Left: The size comparison.
Right: Mr. KL Kong (country manager of TCT Mobile Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.) and Mr. Steven Tan (CEO of Ten Ten Telecommunication Sdn. Bhd.) showing the media the new phones.

That’s all about the launch. I’ll be in KL this weekend, so there won’t be any update but there should be real time updates in Twitter.

Paris and England Trip (20/6/2013-2/7/2013) – Part 17

Posted on September 24, 2013 By sweet surrender 2 Comments on Paris and England Trip (20/6/2013-2/7/2013) – Part 17

2/7/2013, last day in London. Our flight was in the evening so we had morning and afternoon to go somewhere near.

Drove to Warner Bros. Studio Leavesden, I think Harry Potter’s fans are going to be thrilled if they are there. We just drove around the compound and left.

Left: Furry taxi we saw on the road. Not your usual car paint. It’s really furry. It sure caught our attention and the driver purposely drove in sync with us to let us take photo hahaha… So cute! At one point, we spotted a grassy taxi at the opposite direction hahaha… Means there’s grass instead of fur on the car body. Sure an attention grabber, good for publicity. Here’s a video (http://youtu.be/jVoyjeTqauA) of it, the exact same taxi this guy saw as we saw.

Right: To IKEA we went…

Bought some stuffs there and had our lunch there. Love the lemon cheesecake! However, rice and fish & chips were a let down. Others were not bad.

After lunch, we went back to pack and headed to the airport.

While waiting for our flight, we had one last meal in London at Wetherspoons located at Terminal 4 of the airport. Ordered Mixed Grill (£12.55) and 14oz Aberdeen Angus Rump Steak (£15.45). Hmm… The steak wasn’t as good as expected.

Anyway, that’s the end of our trip. Finally the post is completed after so many months! *LOL*

Paris and England Trip (20/6/2013-2/7/2013) – Part 16

Posted on September 21, 2013September 22, 2013 By sweet surrender No Comments on Paris and England Trip (20/6/2013-2/7/2013) – Part 16

1/7/2013, we drove to London, parked our car at the car park near the Underground station and took the Underground to the city. Not going to drive there, it’ll be a nightmare!

Left: Who doesn’t recognize this sign?

Right: I have no idea what’s this, some sort of memorial arch. There’s a lot in the area.

Left: The airspace in London is always busy and planes are flying low.

Right: A memorial of those who fought in the war during 1914-1919.

Another unknown structure *LOL*

When you see this, Victoria Memorial, you’re right opposite of Buckingham Palace.

People waiting for the parade.

This is the only photo I have for the parade, stood at the wrong place.

We then walked to the park while looking for the nearest Underground with the view of London Eye greeted us from afar.

View of I-don’t-know-what *LOL* Nevertheless, it was amazing.

We got off at St. James’s Park Station to have our lunch around the area.

We had our lunch at Nando’s, free flow of soft drink and frozen yoghurt. Funny how we never go to Nando’s in Malaysia but went to those in foreign countries (so far, let’s see… Singapore, Australia, and UK) hehehe…

After lunch, we took the bus to tour the city before alighted at Big Ben.

Left: Big Ben.

Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower – Wikipedia

Right: River Thames.

The River Thames flows through southern England. It is the longest river entirely in England and the second longest in the United Kingdom, behind the River Severn. – Wikipedia

Left: Tower Bridge.

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London which crosses the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name, and has become an iconic symbol of London. – Wikipedia

Right: The skyline with modern buildings of London. Can you recognize some of the buildings? Spot the The Gherkin?

After going to the major attractions in London, we went shopping! No more shoes or clothes or bags but skincare and beauty products for those who ordered from my shopping spree project.

The last destination of the day was checking in Travelodge at Heathrow Heston M4 Westbound. We had our dinner at the Burger King nearby.

That’s the end of our second last day in England.

The next day will be the last few hours before boarding the plane back to Kuching.
